Nice work Caleb! The intro was so good, I really wish I'd thought of that for mine haha. I'm always a fan of builds where compactness and ergonomics are major factors, and the flexible PCB came out great! I actually had a similar idea on my projects list, too - I was considering using an IR camera at the back, with an array of transducers to implement a type of 'sensory substitution' (which, if you haven't stumbled across it yet, is well worth the Wikipedia read). But I'm sure this way gives much more accurate depth information. All the best with whatever's next!

Real microcontoller programming is far more complicated, i programmed a msp430 (Texas Instruments) in my thesis. You have to study the Datasheets, because it isnt just plug and play like an Arduino and you have to configure a lot of Registers and that is the easy part, you have to Develop a circuit board and when you make 1 mistake the whole circuit wont work or get destroyed. Electrical Engineering is not easy. What he did requires extensive knowledge and time. I bet you dont even know how to operate an Oscilloscope.

@YBPhoenix 2 роки тому
Well, the Daredevil Sense was a little bit different. The Lidar like they said uses light to indicate how close or far something is, whereas Daredevil uses sound that reflects off of surfaces to detect and measure distance of said person, place, or thing. And Daredevil powers are technically already a thing. Due to loss of sight one must increase their other senses to "see" and he chose sound, but you can choose to focus heightened smell, touch (like heat and cold), or taste. But anyway, although incorrect, i like the spirit you have with the post.
@drizzitdude
@drizzitdude 2 роки тому
@@YBPhoenix You don't get to choose how your senses are heightened when you lose a sense. It just happens, most likely because your brain no longer needs to attempt to process the information of a dead sense. Think of it more like freeing up processing power on your computer and setting other programs to a higher priority. Daredevil's Sonar like power is nothing like what happens with actual blind people.
@sh0dy
@sh0dy 2 роки тому
@@YBPhoenix yeah i get what you mean but no normal human has daredevils powers to that extent, like to the point where they can sense and hear moving objects at that speed and accuracy. but if you don’t think about the technical side of the spidiesense its almost the same.
@YBPhoenix
@YBPhoenix 2 роки тому
@@drizzitdude you can actually choose if you trick your mind. Daredevil did this through multiple means like using his ice pool he dips into. He's forcing his body to lessen his sense of touch with that, which has to increase his other senses. If you took away every other sense, you could quite literally become Daredevil, but the reaction and focus is an entirely different factor

What if you had these sensors spread throughout the body of a full suit? Hence, if there was something near your arm, your arm would vibrate, etc. Not sure if that would be more efficient or not, but just a thought!
@drizzitdude
@drizzitdude 2 роки тому
This is what I was thinking but it would take a lot of getting used to. For example it would pulse near constantly when near your body, and depending on the direction you would have to grow accustomed to having it change near constantly when accounting for limbs ability to pivot and rotate in their sockets. I am sure if you lived with a system like this for an extended amount of time you could grow accustomed to it to filter out what was and wasn't dangerous or caused by yourself.

You could go a step further and use an electrically-conducting fabric to produce a very powerful magnetic field, power the fabric with the users's body heat using tiny converters, and integrate tiny things that zap in different intensity and location on your body based on the location of the object and its proximity, and they could all be routed to network of controllers, too, so you wouldn't even need one big controller (like in the video). It'd be microscopic manufacturing for the components, though, and they only do macro.

Imagine having goggles that displayed 720 degrees around you (spherical), the microcomputer parts to handle the video processing, a graphic UI that was virtual tied into VR gloves, and a audio output linked with visual output to show relative distances. OR, you could tie in the AV output via a decent sound card technology for 360 degree object placement. With enough lidar sensors, you could create a decent 3D "picture" of your surroundings, sorta like Morbeus' sonar, but with lidar and extremely accurate distancing. The firefighting applications are staggering, let alone military applications, especially for special operations.

A stretchable ring like a sweat band with more sensors and smaller vibration motors for finer sensory input would be great for blind people. They can simple put on the thin ring/band and then sense stuff all around them with their "sensor ring". Manufactured by some company which can really miniaturize the sensors and vibration motors, this could turn into something extremely useful. Multiple rings with various sizes could be made, so you can also wear one around your hip, knees, feet, hands etc. All the software could go into an cellphone app and communicate wireless via some short distance protocol with all the sensor rings.

You could go as far as programming an algorithm that understands what the lidar is seeing and in turn translating it into speech. Im sure there’s a way for the lidar to track the speed of an object so then you could have a literal voice in your ear telling you that “an object is approaching your rear at XX m/s” and maybe even eventually go as far as possibly having the algorithm identify what kind of object it is and give you instructions on how to react to it. I feel like the vibration motors are a nice start but they are limited by a person’s reflexes.

Make this small and compact into a circlet, headband, and baseball cap design with a few more sensors with directional indicators that "tap" your head in the direction of an object and you'll have a fully functional echo location-like device that the visually impaired could use. Or even a glove-like device that slips over your hand allowing you to still use your hand but give you 180+ degree detection view that taps the back of your hand based on the direction its detecting objects. Whatever it is. It needs to be small and blends in so that it doesn't stand out to people around you.
