I love Spike Lee so much! He def doesn’t get his proper respect come awards season bc of his media antics but he has always been a prolific storyteller. I learn so much watching his films. Things that like he said, we aren’t taught in school. Da 5 Bloods is one of if not his best film yet. The message so timely and timeless. Deserves Oscars across multiple categories.

"Retell that narrative." - Spike Lee ('Da 5 Bloods' was an instant classic. That of which Mr. Lee does minus effort. But without embellishing, which is also impossible with Mr. Lee - as a black man, in constant search of the best of us telling, standing on the shoulders of those we come from & executing their excellence with our abilities & position in history and to ourselves, FEELS LIKE A MOVIE ITSELF. I praise this effort for what it inspired, heals, brought to us with infinite quality and magic while gripping the heart, all the while. It doesn't fucking get better.

I think the most deep thinking moment might have been when the Female VietCong Radio host dedicated that Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” song to the Bloods of “Big Red One” the US Army’s 1st Infantry Division. The PsyOps warfare tactics against the brother with the amount of mental pressure they were facing at the time was perfectly placed.

Watched it last week, impressive and historical. When you see Spike Lee refer to MLK Jr.'s speech delivered at the Riverside Church on April 4, 1967 ( Beyond Vietnam) that did it for me. Most people never refer to that speech (one of King's greatest i m h o) and Spike was brilliant in bringing that to the forefront. King was assassinated one year to the day 4/4/68. Mr. Lindo was a tour de force in this movie. Way to go Spike!

Let me add to the narrative, not in away too take away from Spike’s depiction or the sacrifice our soldiers made during that conflict. The Vietnam prostitutes reality was off. Almost all where considered traitors and treated horribly after the war. If they had children from the American GI’s their children , and the Mothers where sometimes killed or brutally assaulted. The US runs a non-profit organization that finds displaced Amerasians as a result of the mixed kids who survived after the conflict and try’s to unite them with there fathers here in the US. Yeah, I have a half brother in Vietnam fathered by my Father while on tour. The agency contacted me through a DNA test provided by one of my estranged nephews trying to chase down his roots. My brothers and sister turned down the agency attempts to repatriate him because they wanted DNA samples from his half brothers and Sister. He is in his fifties, married, has a child and owns a store in Vietnam. Did well for himself it seems, we felt no need to help bring him over, as a result of this country’s blatant and racist attitude. He doesn’t speak English, his Mother after countless encounters with her own people committed suicide after the war, and left him with her parents who turned him out on the streets to defend himself. So I guess Spikes movie’s gotta have a happy ending of sorts, but in one respect it’s a tragedy most bi-racial children encountered here or overseas. Some demons never die.

Thanks for sharing that Dennis. I felt a similar way after seeing the film. It seemed as though Spike Lee didn't really bother taking the time to depict the reality of what the Vietnamese people, in general, went through during as well as after the war. An authentic perspective of the Vietnamese people was completely absent from the film. It was kind of a one-sided look at history.

I always thought it was ironic that Blacks were for the most part excluded from combat roles in WWI and II. Racism saved many a Black man's life as they were relegated to non-combat roles because white racists (who likely dominated the military of the time) felt them "unworthy" of combat roles. As a result they were exposed -overall - to less risk (less, not no risk). Vietnam was different in this respect as Blacks were indeed used as cannon fodder.

Worst Nam flick I've ever seen. Well below Spike Lee's ability. Production level was almost non existent! The charicters were the most unbelievable group I've ever seen. I served with the real guys in the infantry in the 70s. It's hard to believe anybody thought it was good on any level. You cant read about it, you gotta live it or you gotta get somebody who did. "Platoon" was probably the best representation of infantrymen (black or white) in Vietnam. It wasn't the rule, I knew some genuinely bad ass guys who were great soldiers. "Professionals" Thus movie was a cartoon. The only thing missing was fricken sharks with Lazer beams on their heads.
