"HUGE SUCCESS"? Seems more like near-categorical failure to me. If Starship ran out of propellant on a suborbital flight carrying no payload, how could it possible loft 100-150 tons into orbit? Reality is that there have been three successive failures in three test flights with the recovery of no Starship or booster -- Starship HLS was supposed to have made its first uncrewed landing on the Moon by the end of March! If Artemis is to proceed, NASA will likely need to look elsewhere for a lunar ferry.

Perfectly sound logic. The results of the test are not relevant to whether it was _conducted_ successfully. A failure to conduct a test is when it doesn't generate the sought-after data.

That plasma build-up was one of the coolest, most awe-inspiring, most stunning things which I have seen in my entire life, bar none, period. I want to record this sentiment here and now because, someday, it will be quotidien - even for me, let alone future generations - and I want to be able to look back at this moment both in order to retrieve this sentiment and for the sake of getting a good chuckle. The historical quality may be valuable as an anecdote too.

It was indeed (Summoning Chris G.) an incredible success and progress forward. As of IFT-3, Starship has now graduated to expendable rocket status. The parts that didn't work (yet), were the aspects related to reusability but if SpaceX wanted to start expendable rocket operations, they could now, the basics, a.k.a whole rocket stage 1 sending a stage 2 to orbit then let them burn up, is all sorted. They are getting there. It would be incredible once we see these vehicles come back. Exciting times ahead!

At this point, is there any failure that spacex fans won't label as "great success" ? In 10 years NASA of 50's and 60's took welded ballistic missiles of WWII and developed Lunar space missions putting man on the Moon and back multiple times. In 10 years SpaceX took all the advances NASA made in 50 years, and degraded into giant welded ballistic missile. But they sure succeeded in forming most blinded cult of fanboys.

This test achieved everything that the first ULA Vulcan-Centaur test did, except deploying payload and restarting the second stage engines. IFT4 will probably achieve those objectives. SpaceX has five more flights this year. From the FAA EA it appears that SpaceX do not expect to succeed with catching a booster or orbiter this year, but is aiming to simulate them at sea.

I think the 462m altitude of LOV for B10 makes sense because in the footage you see it cuts out at the last cloud level, so the "splash" you see is likely to be the booster just blowing up.
@artemkras
@artemkras Місяць тому
You have to take into account that it takes some time to process and trasmit images. At the speed of sound at about the sea level, an object travels 300 meters per second, so a splash or an explosion event that destroys power lines or a transmitting system will not be transmitted. So my armchair guess is that the 'splash' is either a condensation ring, or a puff of gas from a propellant leak in the engine bay.

A lot of tweaking of the flight software is in order with possible larger grid fins in later iterations. Same with the Starship itself slightly larger fins may be needed. Further hardening of internal structures and possible revisions of the slosh baffle system. Cargo door needs a lot of work to ensure fast smooth operation with a solid seal on closing along with a means to pre-vent the internal volume of the cargo bay as there was visible gas flow as the door opened which may have added to the control problems of Starship.

Agreed. So much work to do. I was actually quite disappointed to see that they didn’t have control of the ship. I don’t understand how on one hand they have Dragon, but starship can’t fly in space. I guess it was just much lower on the priority list? I’m afraid they are going to need a more legit rcs system instead of the diy hot gas thrusters.

It was a fantastic test flight. Well done SpaceX. And Jack - Great job bud! 7:33 An area that surprised me was the payload door mechanism. It looked flimsy, rickety. Given its size and the relatively thin skin of the booster, I would have expected to see a more robust build - like maybe more arms (especially on the ends), or reinforcements. I know weight is always a consideration, but the vids of it made it look kind of jerky, wobbly, and imprecise.

@jwortman1984
@jwortman1984 Місяць тому
I agree. I hate to say but this flight actually deflated my optimism a bit. Before the flight I would have bet the payload door was figured out and starship could fly, but this looked half-assed. I also thought it was interesting to see the lack of any stringers above the payload door for quite a ways up; like that could possibly be a larger opening in the future to liberate tonnage that isn’t shaped like a Starlink. The lack of control over the ship was a shock to me. I wonder if the engine chill down creates asymmetrical thrust and/or the hot gas thrusters weren’t working or not sufficiently accurate. It’s clear the ship flaps have a limited operational envelope.

If IFT4 isnt on the 20th of April to mark 1 year since IFT1 then that would be very uncharacteristic of SpaceX. Gets me right in the feels, the sheer speed of the development and he amazing leaps and bounds they are taking. Before we know it, Starship flights will be as routine as Falcon 9 flights. These missions are just as significant, if not more significant than the Apollo missions. The next barriers in spaceflight are being tackled right now. Starship leaped off the pad with incredible acceleration through the sound barrier. Does anyone know what the G forces were during liftoff and ascent?

I wonder if SpaceX took the Falcon9 code for the grid fins and stuck it in SH as is. It would be close, but not correct. The grid fins on F9 are 90 degrees from each other, where SH are in a different position. A little code should fix that issue. IFT4 should work just fine. As for Star Ship. They need to switch to different thrusters for control. It is a cool idea for what they have, but looks prone to ice build up and loss of pressure when they vented off the O2.

Hope they can figure out the stability problem of Starship for flight #4. Can’t wait to see reentry footage when it’s stable!

Boosters engine ignition failure looked similar to SN8 which they fixed with better tank pressurisation I bet booster suffered the same. They seem to be making very small minor mistakes (which the media takes out of context) their small mistake with S25 was venting the LOX before SECO

The time between flight 2 and flight 3 was four months. It seems reasonable that the time they need will be similar for the next flight, which would place the estimate for flight 4 around mid July.

What was the metallic piece hitting the gridfinn at 6:52, leaving marks on the paint? Was there damage to the engine bells? Aerodynamic breakage due to sideways airflow after flight instability?
@hamzahkhan8952
@hamzahkhan8952 Місяць тому
that was probably some minor debris falling of the ship. doesn't seem like a porblem to me

A great summary and love your enthusiasm while explaining stuffs Jack! An amateur or a dumb question, if the entire ship is covered with heat tiles instead of one side of it, won't there be more probability for a successful re-entry?
@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 Місяць тому
It's more a issue of only applying tiles to the areas most prone to hot plasma exposure on reentry. Space X determined where the tiles were most needed so applying over the rest of the ship should not ensure it's safe return. Ultimately, the only way to know for sure is if the starship can reenter the atmosphere in the proper attitude meaning no rolling about like on this last flight. This would provide the necessary test of the TPS to determine if it is adequate.
