A very good comment, thank you! However, Sabatini's serve wasn't even a big weakness, especially since it wasn't mindless boom-boom-boom back then but was real tennis - tactic/power/technique/mental. But notice the last factor, the mental, which Sabatini started having trouble with after she won '90 US Open. It was known that it was caused by a combination of some difficult losses she went through which were scarring, but also how she maybe subconsciously felt she did all she could possibly do in the sport, and that other things started to interest her such as her business savviness outside of tennis. However, we must all be grateful for Sabatini's great work, talent and flair she forever gave tennis that we enjoy today and forever!

Graf was mentally stronger, too.

Gaby beat Steffi more times than any other player ever so she knew how to beat Steffi. Gaby could hit hard serves, but she grew up on slow red clay and her coaches seemed to think that she should take some pace off the serve and get a high percent of first serves in. Juan Nunez became her coach in 94 at the end of the year and for the short time they worked together before Gaby retired, he had Gaby serving hard first serves with triple digits mph sprinkled in for the first time. You also have to realize that Steffi loved pace. It was smart of Gaby to hit deep, well placed serves with plenty of spin. If you watch Gaby play Steffi at the French open in 95, Gaby served hard first serves and tried to hit flatter, hard groundstrokes and Steffi loved it and destroyed her. Gaby needed to use all kinds of variety, spins and all court tennis to beat Steffi.

Tobiast. I’d say Graf was mentally tougher than any other woman who played the sport. She was a driven machine!

@@moviefan4life166true but she also is the player who faced her the most and the h2h is 29-11 in favor of Graf. Other top players like Navratilova, Evert or Davenport have a much better record against Graf.

jujumusique1305. I was just stating a fact that Gaby knew how to beat prime Steffi and she beat her more times than any other player. There were also many very tight 3 set wins for Steffi including the 91 Wimbledon two points from defeat, the 87 French semi with Gaby leading 5-3 in the 3rd. I disagree with your feelings that Evert had a better record vs Steffi because Steffi lost the first 6 times she played Evert, and once Steffi was 16, she won all 8 remaining matches they played easily (7 of 8 in straights). I would agree that Martina was a great rival to Steffi, in fact I think it was her primary rival. No other player frustrated prime age Steffi as much as Gaby. At one point she won 7 of 8 which is unreal and was 2 points from Wimbledon which would have made it 8 of 9. Gaby and Steffi provided an amazing rivalry and such a contrast in styles. Gaby peeked from the second half of 90 through the Australian open in 93 which was sadly a short period given her talent. Davenport really didn’t show up as a rival until Steffi was always getting injured, barely playing and ready to retire.
