Not only do I love learning Scottish Gaelic, having always wanted to learn a Celtic language, but I’m fascinated by languages in general. In particular how the different tongues spoken here in the British Isles have been influenced by waves of successive immigration and invasions. (I’m English, but like everyone I’m of mixed ancestry - Scottish grandmother, who was a reasonably fluent Gaelic speaker, hence my desire to learn. I know it’s what she would have wanted!) Anyway, thank you so much for all of your hard work in making these videos. I wish I lived in Maine, I think we would have many fascinating conversations. Tìoraidh an dràsta!

Sometimes youtube suggests me channels I would never dream of finding on purpose, and this is what happened (again) a few weeks ago. At midnight, during a raging migraine attack, I came across THIS gem. I kept watching you until my headache stopped completely and I came back the next day for more. So, yes, if you ever need a healer certificate, I can testify ;) I have been learning Ghàidhlig for a few months now but it was your channel and your method that really sped up the whole process and made me motivated even more to keep learning this amazing language. I'm in love with how musical and magical it sounds :) Being a native speaker of Polish and having endured the adventure with the extraordinary grammar of our beautiful language at all education levels, I don't find grammar rules in Ghàidhlig particularly challenging, at least so far :) At the moment they obviously seem to me more complicated than those in, for example, English, German or Russian but still manageable. Or maybe it's the impression I'm getting from your videos and from how YOU explain grammar. Another great video Jason! 'S math a rinn thu! This is great for the verb "Bi" ... what about a part 3 for responding using in the affirmative and negative with other verbs ;-). Keep up the great work!

Spanish does that too....hablar (to speak) becomes hablo (I speak), habla (you speak), hablamos (we speak), etc.. Cha toil leum verb conjugation, ach bhithinn gabh lenition latha sam bith...lol! (Questionable grammer, but true.....don't get me started on the 21 ways to say 'the' in German. That is just being extra!!)

I wish we had the opportunity to learn Gaelic in greater detail at school, we had a couple of teachers in primary school who taught us some basics (madainn mhath agus feasgar math) and obviously there was Dotaman but it's something that I have really enjoyed learning more in recent years and would have been a lot easier/quicker when my brain was still in learning/school mode 🤣 Bon Jovi covers would have helped then too... 😆😆😆😆

Very interesting, Jason. I especially like to know about such quirks of the language which you have explained so well here; I find such things very helpful for learning a language. When I began learning Gaelic 'anns an' was used, but now 'san' seems to be being used. Thanks again.

Yes, I agree with the others. This is an excellent, informative video. Questions: 1) Is it context that determines if the "biodh" form is habitual or hypothetical? 2) Can the past habitual be translated in English as "Did I often work on Monday?" and the hypothetical as "Would I have often worked on Monday?"? 3) What is the difference between the "biodh" past habitual and the "bidh" for things I did often?

I am enjoying your videos very much while I try to learn Gaelic. but I am totally blind, so it is very difficult for me when you don’t read out the things you’re writing in English, and don’t read out the spelling of the words.. for example, is the ‘b’ just a letter, the word bee, bea or something different?

Doesn't "Am bi" also reference habitual activities? Example- "Am bi thu a'ruith a h-uile latha?" (Do you run every day?) How then do you distinguish between future events without additional time words (everyday tomorrow)?

Why do so many TV show that "teach" scottish gaelic have so little of it being spoken? Speaking Our Language is a good example. If i started a stop watch to time how much is actually said between skits changes, video edits, and commercial break diddies i might hear 2 minutes of gaelic out of a 25 minute programme. Ya feel me?
