I'm a huge berserk fan but light novel subaru is beyond guts's suffering, mentally and physically if i saw my loved ones die over and over and me powerless knowing even if i would kill myself i will face em again and cant do nothing but to try to make them alive, guts has one life and sure it was fucking painful and depressing but imagine living thro it more than 10 times.

After arc 7, Subaru really has suffered more than any other character. That shit was unimaginable.

Keep this little detail in mind, because Subaru resets on death to an earlier point in time, technically his body is unable to adapt to the pain he's felt, meaning he feels the full pain every time. His body never gets used to it.

Thing is, guts has a choice to quit if he dies. He can always kill himself if he had enough. Subaru can never escape. He either dies over and over again trying to overcome his problems or run away and gets haunted by his failures for eternity, and even then there's no guarantee that he won't suffer yet again.

Anime fans: "Guts clearly suffered more than anyone!" "Oh, yeah? Subaru had to die painfully over 100 times and see his friends die! He suffered way more!" Meanwhile Subaru: Has a berserk manga on his bookshelf. Meanwhile Guts: Would support the man upon knowing what he went through.

In the 7th arc, he returns only 10 seconds in time to be killed in a different or equal way to the one he has already died. and this happened to him so many times that they are not counted in the novel. that is the definition of hell in many cultures.

Wdyfm? Returning by death is literally the reason why the suffering is so much worse than anyone else’s who can’t ressurect like him. In the LN it’s much worse too. He’s had to not only watch his friends die but do it over and over again. He wanted to give up so many times but was cursed with his ability. He had to be killed by so many different things as a normal human being. The trials he had to go through, the mental harm. He’s struggled himself and had to watch everyone struggle. What the worse feeling was losing someone and being unable to use his ability to restart things. He is never used to the pain. He develops a new ptsd every death and has even resulted to self harm in LN. If you watch isekai quartet, there was a moment where the military magic loli girl (don’t know the name) used a magical attack on Subaru that supposedly even ainz the skeleton guy would struggle with and he commented what mental pain has he been through to be able to withstand that attack without being budging. Idk if it’s true cannon but if it is, it goes to show there is almost no one who can be in more pain than Subaru. To add on even further, much more happens in the webmovel. And if we count the different versions of Subaru via the sin routes, he’s gone through thousands of deaths in the first arc that he finished in a few deaths of the cannon story.

Everyone remember in season 2 when Subaru got eaten by the rabid bunnies? Fun fact: in the light novel it goes into so much more detail about what Subaru felt and describes where and how the bunnies chewed in and through his body So…so much detail…

Bro Subaru just gets dropped into a stranger world with literally no clue what he should do there. Then he gets beheaded, crushed to death, gets gutted, gets eaten alive, froze to death, commits suicide, gets paralyzed mentally, bleeds out in the lap of a yandere who just giggles and talks sh*t the whole time. All these things to a high school boy, who lived a kinda boring and stimulus free life are way more beyond comprehension.

The thing with Subaru is, he can return after death and relive life before catastrophe strikes. Guts doesn't have that. Sure, you can say that dying over and over again for a million or more times while reliving the same shit over and over again is fucked up, but atleast Subaru can progress and have the chance to correct those that he did as a mistake. Guts on the other hand, doesn't have that luxury and he is forced to live his life and can do nothing about those that he wished he had done right. Determining who has suffered more between the two is simply like comparing if greek tragedy is more tragic than the tragedy of the real world. One is magical, one is the representation of real life. Think of it as a suicidal person and a person who has gone absolutely mad and insane; both have the tragic experience of living an unbearable life- one seeks eternal salvation that is death, while the other has been lost through the ways of life can do nothing but live until they die. The former can still be saved, through their own self realization and the help of others, the other is simply a walking dead, suffering more despite having the humane desire to live. Might just be me having skill issues, but that is how I perceive the two. Theres a reason why many people likes to go on a world full of magic and within there, everything is possible; here in the real world, its either you fail or succeed, no going back, only pushing forwards.

Physically yes nuts probably takes it in envy route but mentally and emotionally: Losing everyone over and over again without being able to save anyone (Envy). Killing everyone you love for a cause that is not possible which you think is (Gluttony). Killing everyone and sacrificing everything for a single person just to watch that person cry and kill you asking over and over again why (Pride). Making a decision which leads to you losing your humanity very soul and self worth and making everyone around you mental and emotional wrecks and thinking if you regret this decision or not with no way out for all eternity while dying hundreds of millions of times(Greed). Subaru is powerless and has basically nothing against most enemies in his world, and he keeps watching himself and his loved ones die over and over again. Death is the ultimate suffering in ReZero, the sense of loss of your soul and existence can leave you utterly broken beyond repair. How bad are we talking? Well a certain character who has supernatural Willpower due to certain circumstances was able to feel Subaru's death and a single one left her beyond broken to the point where she reverted to a childlike state and lost all of her cognitive functions, she was left muttering "I dont want to die" again and again. Her last cognitive thought was "anybody who can function after that cannot be considered a human". Fun fact said character was probably one of the evilest we have seen to this point in the show and was the most "inhuman". Its also been mentioned by Subaru that each death is just as bad and all of this is without considering the physical pain before dying and the mental effect of losing your loved ones. And this was just a single death, he has gone through that hundreds to thousands of times and even more than 100 million times in kasaneru. You can argue for diavolo being stuck in a constant death loop however its never been mentioned if each death is as bad as the previous one and normal biology would force his brain to shut his pain system down after a while anyway so he isnt comparable. Guts on the other hand hasnt gone through anything close to "Death" in ReZero, he still has suffered a lot though and both Subaru and Guts are the goat anyway

Guts suffered more in terms of having to live all through that shit. But Subaru didn't even want to live after his 20th death and he had died a million times. The true challenge for Subaru is to keep looking at another person not as another quest to save but to still see them as a living actual person. Subaru at least have a strong mental fortitude to be that guy.
