A subnet mask is a number that resembles an IP address. It reveals how many bits in the IP address are used for the network by masking the network portion of the IP address. This video also does a short lesson on subnetting. Subnetting is breaking down a large network into smaller networks or subnets.

Many many thanks to you PowerCert Animated Videos, because your explanations and break downs are a big help in preparation for my System and Network Admin Certification and please be kind enough to let me wish you all the best before i drift away a bit from subnets and ask you about topologies and your respected opinion on how we decide which topology to use when building our networks are there some rules or is it decided upon a size of network or something else completely and what guidelines should one follow when creating a network for lets say 30-50 hosts? Once again thank you for all of your hard work and effort put in your videos and for the assistance regarding my question,best wishes

One thing that I could not for the mental health of my instructor get past, was the "1's" part and coming up with the subnet mask value. I understood putting the "1" under the bit value position (kind of), but I couldn't understand the rule to know what positions to use/mark. Like "why not start at the lower end?" that I failed to ask him at the time. I couldn't make that last hop to relating _that_ specific action, to the end value of the subnet mask value. Another instructor was opposite us overhearing my instructor try to explain from a dozen different ways when he blurted out, *"You count the number of unbroken ones in a row."* 🤯 It was literally that last little piece of the puzzle to bring everything, concerning the subnet mask subject, together in my head.🤦 That memory is going to stick with me for a while.

Albert Einstein was right, he said: "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough!" this man understands it well that is why everything in his channel is so simple and easy to grasp! teaching is a talent, the will to give your best, dedicated to your work,... there are those who have a good understanding and professionals, but not talented for teaching, some others want to show off, that will ruin everything, that is why sometimes some are not professionals but have teaching talent better than those professionals with better understanding.

This is an example that nothing is really that complicated if you learn from a great educator, and unfortunately few teachers have that skill. I remember in high school geography friends from another class used to always excel better in that subject and seemed to grasp concepts easy. Towards exams our usual teacher wasnt there so they put everyone under one class. That day my mind was opened and I realised sometimes you not dumb, its just that you havent been taught right. The teacher truly explained things in the most practical way that made everyone just get it

I always got frustrated with teachers who gloss over an important step, assuming that the class will just "get it." You actually break it down to each bit (pun intended) so that we'd understand in depth. Whenever I get stuck, this is usually my first stop. Any chance on doing a video about VSLM? Thanks for your help!

As always AMAZING video! Usually in books like Comptia Network+ or any Cisco networking training, they introduce CLASSFUL IP Address first [15:10], then CLASSLESS IP Address (CIDR) [14:15] Class A IP Address offers the ability to have around 16 million hosts (2^24) Class B IP Address offers the ability to have around 65 thousand hosts (2^16) Class C IP Address offers the ability to have around 254 hosts (2^8) But, if you only need let's say 1000 hosts, using Class A is not enough (256 < 1000) and using Class B is WAY TOO MUCH (1000 < 65,536)....That is where Classless IP Address comes in (CIDR). The best solution is to use CIDR /22 or 2^10 = 1024 hosts.
@alexintel8029
@alexintel8029 Рік тому
Good tip in choosing CIDR over Class A/B/C. BTW, don't you mean to say "using Class ***C*** is not enough (256 < 1000)".
