Great idea!! My Dad did something similar with our 1890's uninsulated frame 2-story house with basement: he would lean sheets of plywood all around the perimeter of our house. Underneath them he would pack fall leaves. So when it snowed the snow would bank up at a slant around our house, so it would not only help insulate against the cold, but also in April thaw/melt the water would run off away from our house and keep our basement dry (This was in Massachusetts where many winters we had drifts to the top of the porch roof and we would have to dig a tunnel from the front porch door to the plowed road to get out.)

If you are not living off grid, use a (hard wired) small baseboard heater under your flooring set at a nominal temperature. It will not only prevent your water pipes from freezing, it will keep your floors at a comfortable temperature during the winter months and your home that much warmer.

Nice to see a yt video on tiny homes from Canada, ive been watching tiny homes from around the world which really doesnt help if you want Canadian winterized tiny home. I love tiny homes and seriously searching but i think i'll build my own. Im in northern Ontario and where i am they are not particularly liking tiny homes, but i really don't care, I'm going to do it anyways. The prices of land is crazy put I'm optimistic. With God all things are possible. Where theres a will there is a way. Off grid gets more appealing everyday. Need land first, definitely need prayers for that one😂, thanks for the tips, how much is the propane tank? Id like to go firewood for heat, but perhaps propane or solar for fridge and stove and the incina-toilet that turns everything into ash, and can be used as fertilizer, so no plumbing is needed. Still doing lots of research.

I’m a bachelor so i built a 10x6 tiny home trailer. Probably the smallest you can almost go and still call it a home. Everything is in one circle around you with a fold down bed. I put all the build like electrical plumbing built inside so it can be fixed. I did the same as you with pex for electrical coords that can be changed. My plumbing is manual kick sink with a dump bucket and usb powered shower with a dump bucket. My toilet is dry number 2 with external garbage can that is vented to the outside with an outside lid and ported from the inside so you don’t have to go outside to put stuff into it. Number 1 is a dump container. Diesel heater, wood stove and shore hook up. 42 inch tv with computer chair ps and pc. Ethernet hook up. I got a small portable propane buddy for emergencies. The walls are r15 2x3 with galvanized roof. I plan on doing aluminum exterior in spring. I’m parked on a farm for 500 inclusive and even got a covered slip, unlimited internet, water, electricity, toilet, xtra storage, fed fishing pond beside me with the ok to catch and cook. I even got work without leaving the property. What a gold mine I got myself into if you ask me. Building a tiny home, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

YAS! Love this. We too do a lot of work from home. Our tiny home has given us the ability to chase our dream jobs and start our own business'. Is it small and a different lifestyle with its draw backs? Of course, but we are much happier now than when we worked the "9-5" jobs for someone else and trying to pay off a massive mortgage.

Insulating skirts under the house, those of Plywood. Very important in the cold season. Be careful in the summer, without adequate ventilation underneath the house, moisture can accumulate, causing mold and wood rot.

I'm in Alberta and I use propane too. Get a full sized tank that's outside. Fill it once and it lasts for a few months. My propane company even came out on Friday and filled it up even though I wasn't on their scheduled filling date till next week. In this Deep Freeze, with the heat tape on the water pipe from our well not working and no water, I at least wanted to make sure I had lots of fuel. Alberta sunshine has been warming the inside of my house through all my south facing windows by the afternoon, so my furnace doesn't have to come on as much as it does at night. I was hoping that El Nino weather system which had it warm through the fall and over Christmas, would last till the end of February. That we wouldn't end up paying later for that warm weather. Hopefully, this will be it for the Deep Freeze weather and February will be nice.

I just subscribed to your channel last night, I really like how candid you are with your tiny house. I am wondering if you have a couple of small vents under your tiny house to help vent out any excess moisture that may occur under the house, or if that is even an issue. Raised baby chicks in our house once. Did not do that again. The dust was horrible however we could close the door to their room for their chirping. It worked but a few years ago we purchased a small shed to store our feed in & last year I used it for the baby chicks. Put a large dog kennel in it, wrapped it with foil bubble insulation & added a heat light. It worked great until it was time to move them into the coop.

frozen water pipes are not fun. mine have been exposed for a couple winters now due to groundwork. when they froze I would thaw them out with my hair dryer. this year we have worked on covering them back up but the sand is just on them now (5 tons is a lot to shift by wheelbarrow) but luckily we had a lot of snow, 40 to 60 centimeters in 6 hours before the freezing truly started. nice insulating for pipes and house. I think your chickens are still in lay because of the extra light. they look like very pampered ladies. found you like I always do through christmas videos. what can I say... My new propane furnace was not keeping the house warm, so I fired up the cheap Chinese diesel heater on full. Uses about 2 gallons a day on high, 1 gallon a day on low. I have 2 so if there is a super cold snap (right now -10F) I can fire up #2. This is the least expensive heating option for me. Propane is most expensive (over $1K a winter), running my 24K Senville mini split on high costs me about $200/month, or between $100-150/month for diesel. Make sure the hens have a roost so they can get off the cold ground. I added lights to my coops, and I am getting too many eggs. I have 20+ dozen eggs on my table right now. Corn helps they create heat.

Some context for you guys who don't experience this -- (i live in Minnesota, USA so have had -40 here) -40 is the magic number where C/F coincide -40 is what the Germans in Stalingrad & Napoleon in Moscow dealt with (without winter clothing) yes you really can toss a a cup of boiling water in the air & it will freeze before it hits the ground, I've done it If there is even the whisper of a wind at that temp the total time to frostbite is a bit over 5 minutes I have a 3800 square foot 120 year old house (it does have blown in insulation) I cannot get the temp over 55 degrees with the boiler running full out at these temps Yes the gas bill is ~350.00 ish

That would be awful. Clever solution! This afternoon, it rose to -10, and I was surprised to find myself cheering. Next week, we are back above zero. I hope there is no more freezing for you!

@@kb9847 Can you make some kind of "skirt" around the Mobile home? I did that when i went up to Norway/Sweden by camper back a couple of years ago. Helped a lot with keeping the camper warm too. I used "whatever i could get my hands on" even if most of it just blocked the wind. Only went down to like -23C at nights but kept the greywater tank from freezing/bursting at least.
@kb9847
@kb9847 3 місяці тому
yes, @@peterpain6625 our trailer is skirted and we have electrical heat tape on it as well. We talked to our neighbours and all of them have told us we have to keep a cold tap running. I just hate the waste, but would hate burst pipes more. Thank goodness it's not our regular temps here. We are back to Zero C now. whew!!

Lived in a mobile home in southern ontario canada one thing I did was also put heat tape on my waterlines besides skirting never had a problem in the 7years lived in London ontario not as cold as BC though but minus 20s though minus 18 to day in sarnia ontario for next two days ! Was cozy in my mobile home from1992 to 1999 before the tiny home thing ! Loved it so cozy was 19 wide and 40 foot long extended it by 7 foot wide ! So best investment ! Able to buy current home in sarnia because of the house, etc sale in London as long as small home about same size except have a full basement purchased my current home in 2001 before crazy prices now no mortgage living a manageability life in today's thought world ! Just being smart on keep og expenses as low as I can that Iam a widow and no pension! But we made a plane when we bought this house all those years ago so when Joe passed I could be comfortable if smart with my money!

What are the hardest things to do is making sure animals have drinkable water in this kind of weather. It’s not nearly so cold where I am but I have a heated dog water dish outside for my songbirds.

Have you ever tried egg toast. Beat 4 eggs add 1-2 tablespoons of vanilla soak bread until soaked fry. Serve with butter and whatever you like on pancakes. I am hypoglycemic so no pancakes, I need protein for breakfast or pay price

With a cat and a pair of huskies, that's a lot of souls inside a tiny home. I'm puzzled as to why there isn't at least an option here to heat w. wood - personally, I can't imagine not having a woodstove in ANY sort of cabin - it's well-worth the space it takes-up, and if you used an outdoor one, like you see on many farms, you'd have plenty of heat to keep the floors cozy and the chickens very happy. The money saved is an obvious benefit, and of course, you can still have propane for other things like electricity, or better yet, solar panels to reduce cost. I highly advise against those tiny woodstoves which look lovely, unless you fancy getting-up every 45 minutes through the night to restock your tiny stove. It's also a nuisance bc you have to cut your wood twice as small - basically into fast-burning sticks. You may end-up cursing that decision! They say that with wood, you get warm 3x - once while chopping it, again while stacking it, and finally burning it. And for atmosphere, it's beyond compare - the crackly sound, woodsy smell, dry warmth and beautiful golden glow result in something that hits on nearly every sense. It's "only" -16 C here today, but it's snowing beautifully and there's simply no greater feeling of security and self-reliance than knowing we have a winter's worth of dry, chopped wood stacked securely outside.

I just started to follow you and then the polar vortex came…. We are in Minnesota and will be building along the north shore of Lake Superior in the next year (?). Who built you home. We can’t decide if we should do it ourselves or have someone else do it. When we bought the land they said to put it on a slab.

Light has a big effect on egg production. If you have the lights on to keep them warm, it will trigger them to keep producing. I grew up on a chicken farm; we kept the lights on 15 hours a day to maximize production.

Why let the dryer vent outside? That's heat leaving. Turn vent inside & add internal vent to catch moisture & lint🤷🏾‍♀️.

Is there a reason you don't have a tiny wood stove? It would heat up your tiny home very well. The only downside is you have to feed them much more since they're a small stove. Would be much cheaper than propane and serves as a bit of redundancy/backup for heating.

Strange that you have problems with LPG? Here in Sweden temp in winter it’s also pretty low but our LPG tank as it’s yours siting outside in open. What i have done it’s that i have isolated hose that goes from tank to our LPG heater and never ever have any issues, even at -35C.
