Living Big In A Tiny House

Living Big In A Tiny House

6 місяців тому

This weeks episode is my absolute favourite kind. An innovative tiny house design which has been DIY built and for a budget which is truly hard to believe!
Over the past years we have seen the cost of building sore to new heights and I never thought I'd see another tiny home built for a budget even close to this! In a world where now even the majority of DIY projects can be accompanied by some huge budgets, it's amazing to know that this is still possible!
Jack's project was made possible by a tremendous amount of hard work though. Doing the build over a period of three years gave him a lot of time to cleverly source materials and chip away at the project. Still, he is now only 21 years old and has his very own tiny home! What an accomplishment!

It IS so cute. But remember, the camera can also make things so much bigger. I am THRILLED everything is made from reclaimed wood. So amazing. Unfortunately this is cute for a bit but 2 people will lose their minds together in a short time. And the land is AMAZING! But he said it was cold. If this was in an area where you can go on a beach or spend time outside 9 months a year that would be terrific. Being trapped in a closet sized home all year could be challenging, no matter how cute. The heating method alarms me. Such a tiny space. You absolutely want to make sure you have lots of ventilation. But it is a sweet view and lovely work. Unfortunately I had abandoned chicken coops on the property I grew up on that were this size and they were amazing play houses. While this is definitely awesome, I would never be able to imagine longer than a few years, tops, to reside in. And lucky him t have the resources to afford the dream and utilize his talents!

This is true, but my guess is they worked hard to maintain the property. If they weren't sensible, forward planning folks, as this tiny house demonstrates, they'd have lost the farm to frivolous spending trying to keep up with new farming fads. The grandfather sewed the seed of conservation, when surrounding farmers were focused on monocultural practices and returns. His investment took longer to get a financial return, but he was planning for generations of life succeeding. Which the grandson now gets to enjoy.

And family support
@TxHoneyBee
@TxHoneyBee 6 місяців тому
@@wordhappyHazel Right! We cannot understate his family's support. It sounds like he comes from a family of builders. So between his dad who worked on the build (more than the young man did, he admits), his uncle who owns a construction business (likely helped with engineering and design), and the grandfather who own a 'decent size' farm of 100 acres where he can park his tiny for free, he received loads of help and money to build this. His family's main home is a whole villa, even, and so I'm sure he had a nice place to stay and a warm meal while his tiny was being built. It may have cost HIM only 5,000 pounds but a lot of time and money went into the outcome, indeed. I think it's important to differentiate between a self-made build vs. someone who got loads of support. The outcome is no less beautiful, but why not give credit to those who helped him make a dream come true? Also, why not give credit to people who literally built their tiny home with little to no outside help or financing? It makes a huge difference in terms of the story behind the final product, for me personally.

This house is like a Tardis. It looks so small on the outside, and then you walk into a spacious, yet well-furnished/stocked home. So cosy and very clever use of space. Love the table. I recognise the Salamander Hobbit wood stove. Tiny, but very powerful. I just installed the Salamander range with the same burn section, and am blown away with the heat it puts out on very little fuel. Best stove for a tiny house.

No, that's correct way to put that, it cost so much to BUILD it. If you're talking about access, and "external costs" because you can't work with other people, you would add costs on those de-merits. Not the building of it. If you're Amish you can build an even better house for cheaper. You've got no excuse. Either form a collective today or rely on heritage, but cooperation and lack thereof requires it's SEPARATE crediting. What you're saying here is, "I can't just go to retailer and BUY this property, like all the ther cheap stuff my country gains through exploitation" like it's a bundle of bananas.

A fellow Thai here. We do have smaller houses in Thailand, but not as small as this scale (a footprint of trailer!) I personally think it’s because of the cultural differences. Most Thai lives with their extended family, so a house must be a bit bigger to accommodate family members from their baby to their grandparents - which is why many people prefer bigger houses. Though, younger generations are starting to wanting their own space now, so I can see tiny homes becoming more popular. Living small is more common in bigger cities, especially in Bangkok. But with the population density, you’ll most likely end up living in a smaller apartment (aka “condo”), rather than a smaller house. Wood, while traditionally is a common building material, couldn’t quite withstand the high humidity nor termites. It is also becoming more and more expensive because of resource scarcity. If you want your wooden house to last, then the wood must be properly treated thermally and chemically, which is a long and expensive process. Modern Thais prefer to build with concrete/brick & mortar than with wood.

@@messymont Thanks for a this comprehensive reply. Yes I'd heard about the vulnerability of wood from a European engineer who'd lived in Thailand. Regarding the resource scarcity.. is there a reafforestation programme underway? I imagine the climate would be favourable towards fast growing species. Also if concrete/brick and mortar are still the most common building material.. is there an 'alternative building' community promoting variations such as hempcrete, rammed-earth, cob or rendered strawbale?
