πŸ’‰ History of Syphilis: The Great Imitator - While France and Italy warred against each other, a new disease appeared to ravage the populace. A disease that had such a wide array of symptoms that expressed wildly differently in people to the point doctors called it The Great Imitator. Syphilis. A sexually transmitted disease that caused physical and psychological damage. A disease that exposed affairs (even one pope) and led to doctors beginning to advertise themselves as not only skilled but discreet.

My favorite Syphilis story is a patient account from Dr. Oliver Sacks, in The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat. In it, an elderly woman in her 90s has neurosyphilis, but so far the only symptom is that she feels more energetic, bold and even flirtatious. The woman, quite happy with all this new energy, simply asked for the doctors to keep the disease from advancing so she wouldn't loose her newfound energy. Since the patient was already in her 90s, the doctors went along with it.

This is actually why malaria was so endemic in Victorian societies, see when people who had syphilis contracted malaria the syphilis died. And they had a treatment for malaria, even if it wasn't a cure. Plus malaria was a socially acceptable disease, most soldiers coming back from india had it. It didn't cause physical blemishes, or bone deformation, and only caused delirium from fever.

@thenecessaryevil2634 3 Ρ€ΠΎΠΊΠΈ Ρ‚ΠΎΠΌΡƒ
@@nidohime6233 Since you asked I went and found. Malariatherapy, as it was called, was intentionally introduced into Syphilis patient, the prolonged high fevers would kill the syphilis, you then controlled the malaria with quinine (which led to a boom in the gin and tonic as the drink of 'gentlemen' as quinine tonic). After the introduction of mass manufacture penicillin the practice stopped until around 1917 when it was reintroduced (though not a mainstream practice until 1927) to treat neurosyphilis, which did not always respond to penicillin, it remained the 'best option' treatment until 1949. In the 1950's better methods of inducing controlled fevers became available.
