That upgrade power price sounds like a number given for them not to be chosen. Some contractors do that when they really don't want the job.

Not really, that's a MASSIVE breaker upgrade, and the size isn't the even numbers usually quoted (100, 200, 400, 600 etc amps). Three houses worth! Or one and a half mcmansions. Make you wonder if there's a new power line from the power co involved - my neighbor just had to pay for a new pole! spendy.

You mentioned that GM is selling fewer EVs compared to last year. That's not just because demand for new EVs is down across the US. It's also because the 2023 Bolt sold well in 2023. GM decided it wanted to build bigger and less efficient vehicles instead. I bet a 2024 Bolt would have sold well if it had been on the market. I'm glad I bought my new Bolt late last year.

Sounds like the contractor requested did not want the job thus gave a wild number. Or the Customer is on an old grid with only a single phase 120v line. Requiring the power company to run new wires, a new transformer, and the union labor to do so. That being said when I requested to my power company (idaho power) an upgrade from 200 amp to 400 amp service. They quoted me 10k as they would need to replace the transformer to do so. Or wait a year or so for them to do it sometime in 2024-25 (This was Oct 2023.)

@12:20 This should be added to the LCOE of variable RE The upgrade instead of new lines, is also because there is high restriction on new transport capacity on the grid. Ground purchase/lease is prohibitive in getting new lines.

Given the requirements for most EV right now, charging speed isn’t improved to about five minutes for reasonable full charge, if we assume people do not have home charging, then the number of EV charging stations Hass to be twice as many as the number of charging. However, given our tendency to have single-family homes, and some incentives in some states for multifamily home charging, that will probably reduce those need significantly. I’m assuming that Home charging is not included in these numbers. If we assume 50% of owners will have home charging, my experience is that out of my twice a week charging, which amounts to let’s call it 100 charges at home, three times did I have to charge a charging station, mostly on days when I forgot to plug-in when I got home. So that’s about 3%. At full saturation, therefore, assuming continued growth of home charging, 15 to one actually isn’t that bad. That being said, there are people who are experiencing delays in charging where they have to wait in line, so obviously the distribution of those chargers makes it difference. The question then is what is the proportion of chargers versus pumps along interstate transport corridors, and in major cities. And are there any chargers in some rural locations?
@doittoit00
@doittoit00 13 днів тому
@EliotHochberg I agree with this - I would believe right now that well over 50% of EV owners in the U.S. are single family home owners or renters, and so have daily access to overnight charging, meaning that the 1:15 ratio is fine for now. But as they become more mainstream it has to increase. Are there any figures available that show how many EV owners by percentage have Level 2 home charging?

Exactly where in the US can a residential customer get 325 amp service from their utility company? That sounds like a mis-type of 225 amp, which is the highest that Ameren will do for a residential customer. Now agricultural and industrial customers can get more than that, but it’s usually 480v 3-phase; far from the split-single 240 that residential customers actually get.
@Species-lj8wh
@Species-lj8wh 13 днів тому
It depends on your local power company and the state of the grid in your area. When I was talking with Idaho power they quoted me 10k to upgrade from a 200 amp 240 to 400 amp 240 right now. (10-2023) or wait another year once they get around to upgrading the transformer sometime in 2024. So I opted to replace my main service panel with a larger one and wait for them to do it themselves. Then its just about 2k for another 200 amp panel and 400 amp main breaker. I could request up to 1000 amps residential but its costly.
@avsystem3142
@avsystem3142 13 днів тому
My residence in Farmington, NM, which has a city owned (non-profit) electrical utility, has 500A capacity at the distribution panel. Currently, I am only using 350A with 150A in reserve for future needs, e.g., EV charging. Not sure why you think you are an expert in national electrical distribution but you clearly are not.
@jacobcarlson4010
@jacobcarlson4010 13 днів тому
@@Species-lj8wh: Interesting. Here in Illinois, the pole-mounted transformer is split between 4 (or sometimes upto 6) houses, and the only way I know of to get more than 200 amps from Ameren Illinois is to have them run the 8kv hi-line to a pad mount transformer near your house (if you're in town, they also require that 8kv line between the pole and transformer to be buried).
@jacobcarlson4010
@jacobcarlson4010 13 днів тому
@@avsystem3142: Never once did I claim to be an expert on national electrical distribution. I asked a question, because I only live in Illinois. @Species-lj8wh
@Species-lj8wh 13 днів тому
@@jacobcarlson4010 And that's why the power company already had plans on upgrading the transformers in the area. Our neighborhood was built in the 50s so everything is still pole mounted. Talking with the city inspector, seems like most the new builds around here are starting with 400 amp service.

The lamp post chargers would be a perfect answer for all those who complain they can’t get an EV because they don’t have access to a charger. Ubiquitous L2 or even L1 chargers street side are far more important than fast chargers, IMHO.
@CrissaKentavr
@CrissaKentavr 13 днів тому
So much this! The lamps used to be running big several hundred to thousands of watts bulbs and now run a tenth that in LEDs. But were run for much more. Just having an L1 type outlet on each lamp pole would do wonders for penetration. That's a permit parking that I'd finally support. Tack on free or cheap day time charging for micro e-mobility like bikes and scooters and you've created paradise.
@alsavage1
@alsavage1 13 днів тому
@@CrissaKentavr Nah, most older streetlights were provisioned for at most 500W (0.5kw). And likely 277v. That's not a lot of juice, 500W, not even a decent L1 level. Thousands of watts? Maybe stadium parking lot clusters, but not typical streetlights.
@Snerdles
@Snerdles 9 днів тому
This doesn't make much sense to me. The cabling to run lamps is probably one run for multiple lamps and probably is fairly small cable to run the small loads. It would have nowhere near the capacity to plug in multiple EVs even at 277V 10A, or 2.7kw on one post. If you did 4 chargers plus the lamps you probably are pushing 50A down there continuously so probably would need 6awg or maybe even 4awg ,(5-6mm) which is beefy and expensive cable. 2.7kw may not even be enough to charge a vehicle in cold enough temperatures as the battery heater will probably need somewhere in the 3-5kw range to stay above freezing.
@TaiViinikka
@TaiViinikka 2 дні тому
@@Snerdles Why does the battery need to stay above freezing? That's not in my manual. I ran my daily driver Kona EV on a 115 V / 15 A (derated!) circuit for 2 years before I finally got a Level 2 charger. Average daily commute in Canada is ~22 km whereas 8 hours of charging on my Level 1 (1.4 kW) charger gives me 11 kWh of energy, or enough to drive the Kona around 58 km. In summary, it seems to me that lamp-post chargers could be a game changer for future EV owners living without driveways. Notes to those future EV owners without their own personal driveway: 1) Seems like an expensive area, could you maybe move so you aren't >60 km from your job? 2) Seems like you live in an urban area, maybe try driving a car or crossover instead of a Hummer EV or Silverado EV.
@Snerdles
@Snerdles 2 дні тому
@@TaiViinikka there are a few lithium battery versions that can charge below zero, but the most common ones in EVs generally don't so they have heaters that heat the battery. It can potentially damage the battery and will reduce life span. The act of charging does generate heat though, so if you were driving it and using the battery then the heating system and usage will likely have the battery at a fine temperature anyway. If you happened to forget to charge the car after your week of usage and then go to plug it in on Sunday night after it sat at -20C then it would probably sit for hours before it started charging just to get the batter up to temp before charging. The BMS will only let it charge when it is safe to do so. In my own PHEV it disables Regen, Battery Usage, and Charging if the battery is at least than -15C and only runs on the engine, which then heats the cabin and batter compartment using an exhaust from the cabin and once the batter starts to warm up you'll start getting EV mode for driving and then eventually Regen will work once it gets warm enough.

Tesla "Autopilot" is *NOT* Tesla “Full Self Driving (supervised)”. Tesla “Autopilot” is only _driver assist,_ standard with all Tesla cars, which steers, accelerates and brakes automatically _within a highway lane,_ still with active driver supervision. Tesla “FSD (supervised)” adds navigation, auto lane changes, autosteer on city streets, traffic light and stop sign control and automatic parking. All still with DRIVER SUPERVISION and observation from the internal camera. It’s FSD that eventually _may someday_ be fully autonomous, not the Autopilot driver assist.

Can't do anything on my end like turning comments off and don't know what UKposts equips you with as video producers. Please help.

Thanks for being here! UKposts is mysterious as to "shadow banning", sometimes only you can see your comment but it's invisible to others (check on a different browser). Producers can add a keyword list to ban comments from posting, ban a person from commenting totally, or just not be miserable when reading someone else's opinion. (One can both fully support Tesla yet remain open to questioning Elon's politics.)

The three little dots that appear if you move your cursor to the upper right corner of your comment give you the option to edit or delete. If used it on myself a few times.

There have been 500 deaths associated with Tesla vehicles.

How does that compare with other manufacturers? I could find rates per million miles but not individual deaths for a manufacturer.

Maybe mention how you know this. Also, if you can find this information for Tesla, you should be able to find it for Ford, Stellantis, VW, etc. and divide by total vehicles produced to see how they compare. Even then, the real measure is deaths/mile driven.

@@jimgoff1170 I don't know, but does your Toyota mistake the closeness of motorcycle tail lights for a car hundreds of yards away? Does your Dodge run that motorcycle over on its own accord?
