One clarification: The price for the Camera Module 3 is still $25-not $35 as stated in the video-at least for the standard versions. The wide-angle versions of both the normal and NoIR camera modules are $35.

The camera module is decent. A bit of post-processing in the form of tonemapping should bring a massive improvement. Definitely usable.

I'd be interested in seeing this case being expanded to the idea of holding an internal battery. I have a couple of unused Raspberry Pis and as a amateur hobbyist photograph, this looks like a fun and cool idea.

I've built a few Pi-based cameras that stream over LAN and are powered by PoE, so it's not wireless, but it's a single cable installation which suits me fine, and the screen I used was connected via the DSI port which made the preview video butter smooth. I also used the HQ camera because I wanted interchangeable lenses, but overall it was a very satisfying build.

It really shows how much camera tech has improved, 25$ can get you quite far At the same time it shows how much is happening in software nowadays where it's never just one picture taken but several stitched together for sharpness better lighting and exposure, aided by a bunch of machine learning in the image processing stage I really hope we can get an open source camera software at some point that's at least close to the quality of modern cameras because the idea of a DIY camera you can actually modify yourself is awesome.

there are a few special drivers for that screen that gives it better framerate, people have developed it for portable arcade builds where frame-rate is needed for games, might help your viewfinder experiance

This would be amazing for long time lapse photography, for example a plant growing. Professionals in this field connect the grow lights with the camera, having them on during day cycle, then toggled on/off for photos at night. Pi would be great for this!

Hey Jeff - really enjoyed this one - especcialy in regards to seeding ideas (the NoIR could be a potential candidate for a door buzzer cam I've got on my project bucket list)! About the case and the tripod mount - I understand that 3D printing a 1/4" thread in the base is not much of a good idea due to precision/strength - but what about printing (at least roughly) a 3/8" thread - and then screw in a 1/4" to 3/8" brass or steel adapter? No idea if that would prove to be strong enough - just putting a thought out loud ;-)

Use a piSugar for power. It works really well on a Superman Lego radio I made. Add a shutdown button to power down and power up (Howchoo has a good script for that). And can you add a cheap flash? Also, does it take the pictures in RAW or JPG? It would be good to just have it take RAW images that can be processed in post.

I currently use the HQ module for a webcam so I'm changing over to this new module as it's close in sensor size and will also take up considerably less space without the need for a lens.

i hope they keep developing the interface and making it easier for translator interfaces to be imposed between the camera and the connection so we can get modules that let the pi talk to professional, full frame sensors so parts of old DSLRs with dead controller boards can get a new lease on life

Great video, I love the Pikon camera housing! Have a look at the HyperPixel 4.0 as a display alternative, it’s a 4” IPS display with capacitive touch - I bought one a while back for a project that I never got around to finishing.

I noticed the wavyness in one of the very first pictures you showed with the Pi camera. It was an indoors dark shot. Didn't notice it in any of the others until you mentioned it though. But it definitely doesn't just happen in the outdoor shots.

Thanks! If you make another video, a comparison I'd really be interested in isn't this camera vs. smartphones or other camera options, but rather this camera vs the pi camera v2 -- for those of us with v2's that wonder about upgrading, etc.

I wonder if the tiny bit of video stutter was from writes to the SD card not keeping up? It would be interesting to see the same camera module tested with a zero 2, a Pi 4, and a CM4 using SD, emmc, and a m.2 SSD for comparisons. Clamp the camera module itself in a fixed position and have it aimed at something that moves in a repeatable predictable pattern so the output from all 5 runs can be compared. If the zero 2 can keep up I'd say it would be the ideal host system for the printed camera since it would leave a lot more room inside the case for a battery and it would take lass power. At the other end in theor somebody could make a custom CM4 carrier board with a slot for a SSD and including a dedicated header for a shutter release and maybe a few other hardware buttons and include a battery circuit for dropping in a battery pack. Because the CM4 can use two camera modules if two headers are included on the carrier the case could be designed for two side by side modules allowing for options like stereo photos, one for regular and one IR, or one regular FOV and one wide.

you mentioned that wavy-ness being in outdoor shots, but in the first pic you took, of your controller, I noticed a type of wavy pattern on the wall around it.... you think that could have anything to do with the same thing as the tower pic?? hopefully when you test this out you not only get another pic of the tower but you try to replicate that controller pic..... heck, maybe you should try to get the same pics each time there is some kind of update to this module of software, etc... like when you work on the HDR :)

A comparison raspberry camera with the two cameras from arducam would be very interesting.

Did you try to install android and test gcam( if api2camera is supported) ? With this little module software make a lot of difference

I think its just not the software or module that makes the difference, Chips are also custom designed to process raw images and videoes.Together it creates much superior results.

I'd like to see some experiments with this: 1) Comparisons of this with the HQ camera. 2) Modding the lens to be higher quality. 3) Running Android on the Pi and using the Google Pixel camera app. That may possibly result in better software processing that would compare with the iPhone more.
