After years of randomly clicking around roads when creating routes and encountering a number of problems with GPS navigation, this route creation tip has been a huge time saver. This video is a walk-thru of creating the 60km road ride for the Ballarat Cycle Classic using the Strava Route Builder 2.0. If you have any additional tips for creating routes please let us know in the comments!
*Note the incorrect routing around roundabouts is likely due to the USA based Strava and Mapbox not paying enough attention.......down under. 🇦🇺🦘🤷🏻‍♂️

The clicking beyond is something I've done for a while but hadn't thought of the small click below if going back over the same route. What I have done before is click on another road and then go back and pull the point back onto the correct road. Also as you can see on the route highlight some the parts are been shown as unpaved even when you have said prefer paved. Here in the UK we can have issue because of the heat maps including MTB data even when you have said its a road ride it will route you up and rough and rocky road. Or sometimes not even a road. Google maps can be a real saver to be able to check out and view the road before and make changes.

4:14 did you know you could just pull that Buninyong junction node onto the correct road section and it will correct the route without you having to delete the 'finish' node, so if you've planned a long route and notice an error half way through you don't have to undo everything, you can just drag nodes into the right spot and Strava will correct the route.

@Shane Miller - GPLama Great video mate, hope you're doing well? I think you've just nailed some of the issues I've had with my routing, where the Wahoo instructs to turn left when clearly it's a right turn that's required - I'll go back and zoom into the route, I bet I've done exactly as you did to start, and inaccurately specified a waypoint. Cheers!
@robbeelsas
@robbeelsas 3 роки тому
My tip for making routes is what I call "the 4 point system" and it goes like this: 1) create a starting point 2) turn on segments and look for a segment that's very popular or have a look at it on Google maps to make sure it's something you'd love to ride. Then add another waypoint there. 3) look a the heatmap for a popular road and select another waypoint on your way back home that's not located on the route to the segment from step 2 4) add the final waypoint on top or close to the starting point. Keep in mind that the more waypoints you add, the more nasty surprises you may encounter in terms of bad roads. Using less waypoints gives STRAVA more options to automatically choose the most popular route between waypoints!

Good tip Shane, I'll have to put that into practice. Now I question I have regarding Strava routes; why doesn't the web version have the route suggesting feature that the app has? I find this an interesting feature for finding routes I don't typically do but on a phone it's difficult at times to see it all. If I could do this on my laptop/PC it would be so much easier.
@marcogiampa283
@marcogiampa283 3 роки тому
Random tip for Garmin Conect mobile, if you are trying to make a route on your phone on the fly, if its an out and back (but not 100% so you cant use the "out and back" button) when you try add a point on a road that you have alread ridden, it just adds the the point to the previous line and doesnt make that the new destination, instead, just click on a side street near by and then drag that point onto the spot you need and voila. Probably works for some othr styles of gps where it does this

Hi Shane, thanks for the video tips. I'm looking for some Strava -->> GPS information that I can't seem to find online. I recently got more into road cycling as opposed to smaller x-country trails I'd do off by heart. I did the Strava free preview and the Route feature you show here is nice for finding new routes but when I send the route info to Google or Apple Maps, all the data is borked. If I'm lucky, Google will retain each stop as a longitude and latitude coordinate but once I hit one stop, it'll say I reached my destination and force me to pull my phone out and kinda redo it from that point forward. Just a pain. Because of this, I'm not really seeing the value in the Strava Premium at all. However, you are holding a bike computer here. Does linking up Strava to the bike computer actually route you along the way properly without issues? I don't know anybody who uses one and I can't seem to find videos showing the relationship between Strava and a bike computer. Any help is appreciated. Cheers!

I’ve found Strava routes 2.0 hit and miss. 3 things in particular. Even though I select ‘paved’ roads, it has routed me onto walking tracks far too often that I now need to verify a route using google earth before I leave the house, or just cross my fingers. If I let the app suggest a route, I lose sight of the elevation chart after I save the route and last, but not least, if I use my phone to navigate (rather than sending the route to my Garmin 820), there is no ‘map up’ functionality in the app, which makes it unnecessarily difficult to navigate once out on the road. The heatmaps almost make up for all of this, especially in unfamiliar terrain. I just finished a 6,500k road trip around Europe. I used Strava maps to plan rides and the heatmap took me on the best roads for cyclists (when it worked!!).

I think it's not just me who's been waiting for this (let's be honest, very simplistic) feature FOREVER. It's maddening when you have multiple pages of routes, and you just want to say, see the ones up to 30 miles long, cause maybe that's all you can ride for the day. Or by elevation, etc. I mean, ANYthing would be welcome really, but advanced sorting should still be a reasonably easy thing to implement and I don't get why it hasn't been done. Another good vid, btw. Your content is always solid.

The big spanner in the works with Strava routes is that they don't play nicely with older/lower end Garmin units. The files lack turn-by-turn directions on the Edge 520/510/500 and the like, so it makes using them a matter of following the breadcrumb line and hoping you don't miss a turn. Higher end Garmins, Wahoos, etc. do OK with them. Strava still isn't anywhere close to RideWithGPS in terms of function and utility for route designing per my years of experience with both tools. Just my $0.02.

I’ve been using rwgps for route creation but haven’t figured out how to edit without deleting from the end and starting over from the edit point. Also have some routes with u-turns that tell my edge 830 to reverse course 0.3 miles early. Other u-turns work fine. Go figure.

@@speedlever This is one of the great features of rwgps. I use it all the time. I never use Strava for route creation because it lacks this function. See this link for info on how it works, ridewithgps.com/help/advanced-route-planning-editing#delete-section

...and then when it’s uploaded to garmin, the elevation goes bonkers! A 2k d+ becomes 10k or so! When opening the course on head unit, just check summary to see the difference in elevation. So automatic hill recognition becomes useless... any workaround?

This course on.... Strava: Elevation 605m. Garmin Connect: Elevation 697m. Synced to an Edge 1030 Plus: Elevation 773m No summary given on the Elemnt Roam.

Shane Miller - GPLama thanks for checking with Wahoo... try my w.e ride www.strava.com/routes/2741583380673455182 shows ok on garmin connect, but once in the edge 830 becomes crazy!
@gplama

2470m ascent estimated when loading that on the Edge 1030 Plus. Possible map issue on your 830? Have you connected it via USB and used Garmin Express to make sure they're up to date?

Shane Miller - GPLama thanks for checking, will try this at home. But I seem not to be the only one with the issue: forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-530/234759/strava---gc-wrong-elevation-data-after-sync

If I already know the route, why would I use a route builder? I don’t get your use case - usually I know the starting point and have some idea where to go - I expect Strava to give me the most popular route.
@gplama
@gplama 3 роки тому
Distance to next turn information, ClimbPro, to share with others, etc. There’s many reasons to create routes. There’s also popularity routing if you want to click waypoints further on the route and let the service choose the best path.

Why do you have to press every intersection? Isn’t this just a waste of time? I usually click starting position and end position and then I fix the route that it automatically selects based on where I actually want to go. This saves tons of click and sometimes I can make 100km routes with just 5-6 clicks cause it automatically selects the most popular (and so usually the best) routes.

Potato potato. There’s a few ways to skin this cat. This way I knew it was correct at every intersection and didn’t take all that long.

I wish the Strava route would have street name turn by turn on the Wahoo Element Roam (as on the Garmin GPS). I am still dreaming for that day.

Looks like an issue with Windmill Drive. It deviates and snaps just off the road by a few meters. It'll be fine on head units.

Love your work Shane but this was nine minutes for “click just beyond the intersection”.

You can bail out right at the start. Four clicks in. Two minutes. There's a few other tips along the way and an example of what happens when the route doesn't go to plan. Of course these are balanced by my Swift Zwift Tips. Swings and roundabouts... so to speak. :)
