Bought a Sub around 1979/80, still have it. Purchased from a Rolex authorised agent, over the counter, no waitlist bullshit. Other Rolex watches available too. £400 cost then, around £2000/$2500 today. Back when it was something a working man could obtain.

I love when people shit on companies that are around for a very long time. You bought a product and are happy with it, yet you’re shitting on a company for being boring and not innovating. You have to sell in order to stay afloat. That baffles me. Buy what you like, let others do as they wish. Many buy vintage gray market, and many buy brand new. As far as subs go I prefer the modern 126610 over this one by a mile. The worst one for me gotta be the 116610 with the supercase

If you want a Rolex, stick with vintage GMTs and Subs. You can get a vintage Pepsi or Coke for around 11k. If you want ceramic, get the SeaDweller 43 for 11-13k. The TT GMT oyster band is also around 13k and it has a green GMT hand and green lettering on the dial. You are absolutely correct, the last two years of Rolex have been half assed at best. Silly dial OPs and DayDates-for losers.

Yes and thank you. I 100% agree. I actually lost interest in Rolex after the 16610 and 14060. I also miss drilled lugs and while I own a 2008 16610M, I always toyed with the idea of picking up a used 90's tritium dial 16610 but I'm not paying $9k for a used one when I payed 6k for a new one in 2010.

I was on the waiting list for a 126610ln for 1 year and the AD called me and offered me a 124060. I took it of course, beautiful piece, true classic

I think what you mean is that you don't like the new stuff. We're disappointed every year by what Rolex is putting out, and a couple of months later everybody is waxing lyrical about the new releases. Remember the GMT Sprite? The 41mm Submariner? The 1908? The titanium Yachtmaster? Now everybody loves them. Watch collecting is going down because the Covid lockdown has ended and people are spending less disposable income on luxury goods and more on going out. The more I look into Rolex, the more I'm appreciating the pre-ceramic models, but I still like certain ceramic models over the pre-ceramics. The ceramic Daytona's look better than the all metal ones. The Sea-Dweller 116600 is objectively the best Sea-Dweller they ever made. I love the Rolesor GMT-Master II they released last year, and the white gold one with the meteorite dial. For a Submariner, I would go with the 14060M. I think the 16710 GMT-Master II looks amazing in the Pepsi and Coke variants. You can have preferences, but just because your preference lies with the pre-ceramic models, doesn't mean "the best of Rolex is behind us !" (and that's including the superfluous space before the exclamation point). Technically, Rolex keeps getting better. The new movements are an improvement over the previous movements. The new watch faces are improvements over the previous watch faces. The Chromalite lume is an improvement over the Super Luminova, which was an improvement over the Tritium, which was an improvement over Radium. The trend is just to keep making watches bigger. That will reach a critical point, and then they'll start making them smaller again. Design is of the time, and products should be designed to sell during the time they are produced.

Appreciate your passion for watches, but you lost me at comparing Rolexes to tires. Even the trucks/F-150s is a better comparison. Rolexes are iconic because of their incremental improvements/changes. Just like a Porsche 911 or an iPhone. Tires are basically a necessity which is why it makes sense to purchase them based on specs and value. Mechanical watches are purely emotional. Everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, but I’d challenge people to look at it through an emotional lens and put aside the stats sheet. If you own a mechanical watch, then you already have, once before (or in my case, too many times) whether you’d like to admit it or not 😉

I appreciate the honesty. For originality, look to the micro-brands.

I was just saying the same thing on a Rolex forum the other week. When the final narrative is written by future historians, I believe the 5-digit references will be revered as a high point, a 'sweet spot' in the Rolex pantheon.

Yeah, rolex can kick rocks. They play games. And honestly, they aren't really special. Assembly line watches.. people go crazy because of the marketing but... you are them everywhere. Go to any event and you will see 10% of those people wearing the same watch. You used to buy rolex to be different and special. Too much hype and not enough to back it up.

“Getting worn out.” Same applies to me. I’m largely don’t with horology and this community. Noobs to this all over social media labeling the new monotone BB41 a Submariner, yet despite it being an awesome watch, it looks nothing like a sub. The BB54 and Pelagos 39 look more like subs, but they’re still not subs. If Rolex took your Submariner shown here and upgraded only the movement, bracelet and lume, and maybe use maxi markers and maybe (maybe) a ceramic insert, they would maintain the charm and elegance of the 5 digit subs and bring it to the modern era. Perhaps someday, but I’m not hopeful. Most have long grown tired of Tudor’s vintage themed watches, yet they insist on rolling more out. Faux rivets and gilt use by Tudor has become stale.

I get why you would trash Rolex. They've lost the plot. But not sure why you ripped Tudor. They are today what Rolex was 20-30 years ago. The Black Bay 41 and Black Bay 58 are basically what you're holding in your hand.

What’s crazy about watches or anything for that matter is about advertising and wanting something it’s usually because of how it’s marketed and how people react to it. I feel like we’re sheep and we need to follow what everyone else is doing. I bought a Rolex recently and paid 16k for it and I left tge dealer super happy and also super upset that I had to lower myself to dealer and play a game just so I can spend 16k of my money and had to thank the guy for it vs him thanking me! It’s bullshit. So needless to say, I got my Rolex and will never lower myself to one of these dealers again. I recently went into a dealer while on vacation, walked in said hi, asked if he had anything available, he said no, and I said ok later! He kind of looked at me like wait, your not gonna come and kiss my ass for a few minutes? I have breitling, g shock, tag, and now working on getting an omega. All these brands are happy yiur in there store, watches are just as nice if not better in some instances and they will work to earn your business vs these Rolex shit heads that think there watch gods. 😂😂
