Samsung's Galaxy phones use either a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip or an Exynos chip under the hood. This not only leads to some Galaxy phones having worse performance, but can also be holding back new features from all Galaxy phones.

My S20FE or note 20 couldn't keep up at all, ditched the Note 20 for an S22 Ultra when I got the word that my region was 'blessed' with the grace of being an SD country and it felt like jumping up 4 or 5 generations of performance and power efficiency.

Again as a techie I'd live to actually see in the boxfront being samsung SQ22 or SE22 (for qualcom or exynos) but that would only increase the problem from techies to care to general public to also care and that'd be trouble for Samsung

It's not just US and CA, they sell their own people in their own country the Qualcomm version. I was waiting for an S24 but now they say they're going to put Exynos in the S24. From my own personal experience, the Exynos is NOT as good as a Qualcomm. You can take the exact same version of the S22 in both different chips and you'll find the Qualcomm is faster and has better battery life and doesn't get as hot. To me, it appears on the surface at least that they are treating North America/Korean customers better than Europeans/rest of the world. Couple this with the fact that us Europeans tend to pay more for our phones than US customers do it seems like we're getting a raw deal.

@@Fvr3sIt's harder when you don't make the SoC. Apple can optimize the hell out of their ARM devices because they make both the SoC and the OS, and can design one to fit the needs of the other and vice versa. An example is the accelerator blocks in the M2 gpu that let it push way above its weight class in native Mac video editing applications. Samsung could do this, making changes to their SoCs and to their flavor of Android to be a more integrated system. Since they also make the memory, flash, and display, they can go really hard at tuning the whole system. Imagine dynamically downclocking the GPU when the display is at a lower refresh rate or dedicated acceleration for camera stabilization.

What annoys me most is that Samsung doesn't take advantage of being the only Android OEM besides Google with their own Chip Manufacturing divison. Take the Galaxy Tab S Line - they always use just a standard Snapdragon SoCs. Why not make a custom Exynos SoC for these devices. Make maybe a 12 core design, with higher clocks while dropping Modems, high grade NPUs and ISPs. Because im a Tablet you are much less restricted by battery and have little use for an 8K Image signal processor because its a damn tablet. Or why not make much more affordable Exynos devices. You don't have to pay the qualcomm tax so pass these savings on.
@ashar8192
@ashar8192 Рік тому
Samsung Semiconductor and the Samsung Mobile division are two different entities, Samsung mobile buys the Exynos SoC's off from Samsung LSI, hence they have to place an order first for making a tablet SoC. The fact that they aren't vertically integrate, like Huaweis and Apple's semiconductor and mobile divisions, is dumb, but they're changing that apparently with the development of the exclusive AP for Samsung devices in 2025 While I would love to see tablet exclusive SoC's too, I can see from miles away that Samsung would fail to give the incentives to the devs to optimise their apps for their AP. It's already annoying with the normal smartphone Exynos SoC's and would be even worse in the tablet market, where most apps aren't even optimised for tablet screens/ most apps simply run better on Qualcomm SoC's as they have the biggest market share in the Android space. Like, PhoneBuff's speed test between the E2200 and SDGen 1 has shown a huge difference in video exporting time, but considering both have the nearly have the same CPU core layout, the difference can be explained with one (the SD model) utilising the hardware encoding capabilities of the SoC, while the other (Exynos model) relied on software encoding.

2:51 My opinion on this half. Samsung Exynos chips generally are built on top of a less capable foundation. If we compare the same 5nm from Samsung and another 5nm from TSMC, we can see a difference in both performance and, of course, specs. Hence the difference in performance between both SOCs. I assume anyone who has gotten into the meat of this knows that Samsung, while they may always come up first when it comes to making more efficient transistors, don't really make the best ones and will always fall behind TSMC who doesn't just make foundations for Snapdragon, but also for Apple's Bionic CPUs. On the software end, this usually is decided by "what is the peak capability of this SOC?" "Peak performance," in my opinion, isn't the highest score it can get on Antutu and Geekbench. But, rather the, in a gaming sense, "The most stable fps over time plus power consumed during the test." No matter how powerful an SOC is, it's "Peak" performance is nothing more than a gimmick for many everyday users. Inorder to understand this, let's say that, we are testing a phone's performance through a game. We measure the Minimum, Maximum, and Peak performance. Minimum is the lowest FPS you'll experience during the test and maximum being the highest fps. The "Peak" will the the most stable FPS it can get over time. Now, imagine that we got a score of 20, 60, and 40. Over a 5 hour session with 30% remaining in the tank. You played Genshin Impact on medium graphics to keep the phone from damaging its internals. Now, to a manufacturer, they will prioritize maintaining the "Peak" performance and if they can, will try to improve it. "What does this have something to do with software?" The "Peak" performance dictates the complexity of the software it can handle. Like smoother, slicker animations, A.I management, and so-on. These generally don't use the maximum output of the SOC but, the Peak. The higher the Peak score, the more capable the phone is and the better the software experience and the more things the devs and manufacturers can cram into the device. And most importantly, the more consistent the performance althroughout. Unlike Google nor Apple, Samsung devices doesn't posses the software smarts that Pixel devices have nor the Hardware capability of that of the iPhones. So, for them, they basically have to strike a balance between the two. Doing the best they can in both areas to create the best experience that they can give to users. Essentially, Samsung can't compete with Google when it comes to software optimization and with hardware performance from Apple. "Now how does this connect to the topic?" Throughout the recent years, Samsung has seem to have always come out first when it comes to making new features and creating new transistors. And usually, we get a not so good as we hoped one. Because of this, it's pretty obvious that Samsung doesn't take their time with creating a proper product. They always rush, rush, rush so that they can catch-up to their schedule. This is their main problem, the problem can be seen on their Exynos SOCs. While they may always come out first with them new transistors, they will always get out done by TSMC, who takes proper time to create a reliable foundation for SOCs. With improvements that allow for more. So, yes, Exynos is the problem along with Samsung.

It's a Win Win situation for us customers and companies if they can pick and chose what chips they wanna use. Also might even force them to drop prices to compete which then MIGHT lower prices for us (probably not mind) Google are doing it, Apple been doing it for forever now, Huawei did before the ban and look how well they was optimised? My Note 10+ is sadly a Exynos one. And for example, the Amazon App really is stuttering, Spotify is lagging like the first 10s until its there, and many other Apps where the OnePlus 7 Pro of a friend just isn't. So the Snapdragon 855 is better optimised. And there is a lot more like Camera, Battery life etc. This issue is existing since the S8 Series until nowadays the S22 Series. Like 6 generations. So thank god or someone that the S23 will Ship with Snapdragons! Maybe I'll buy one.

Even my older S6 edge Exynos is smooth on those apps, glad that Samsung still with Exynos.

Maybe the chip isn't the problem, it's just how Samsung manages the CPUs and how Samsung optimizes the phone for the CPU.

Samsung should either make exynos better the snapdragon or go with snapdragon only. For most of the users it's not a big of a deal coz both processors are almost equivalent this year. For me the problem is battery with both chipsets doesn't lasts full day and i have to recharge it again.
