It's also interesting to consider that the reason why the Aten became so popular during Amenhotep III's and Akhenaten's rule may have been political moreso than spiritual since Amun's priests in Thebes held an immense amount of power. The pharaohs at the time would've needed to stay on their good side and try to appease them. By demoting Amun, the royal court stripped the Amun priesthood of that power and by making themselves the only conduit between the human and the divine, they conferred it on themselves. It's kinda similar to how Henry VIII made himself head of the Church of England after splitting off from Rome. Political and spiritual power combined in one office and one person. Of course, though, we can't know Amenhotep III's and Akhenaten's exact motivations and a lot of Akhenaten's actions do seem to suggest that he did actually believe in this new religion of his so it may have been a mix of the two or it may have started out as political scheming under his father but then turned into genuine belief under Akhenaten. It's impossible to know but it's fun to think about.
@harlanabraham7772
@harlanabraham7772 Рік тому
NeonKitty, I think you may have stumbled onto something. Amun's priests did have immense power. Also, under the Amun priests they believed in more than one G-d. Polytheism. Akhenaten didn't bring about monotheism as we know it. Akhenaten only believed that Aten was the only G-d worth worshiping. The clerics didn't like this. The clerics even arranged the murder of Akhenaten. They did arrange for Tutankhamen to become a Pharaoh. Then the religion moved back to what it was before his father saw the light. By the way, when funds went low, the clerics robbed the pyramids and the royals. The only one's untouched were Aktenaten and King Tut. His son. And his wife.

I don't doubt he believed in it strongly. If he threw the old gods out at all, that is true dedication. Changing his name also indicates this. Also, the priests not only saw this as an attempt on their power, it was, but they also would have seen it as an abandonment of righteousness. The king had thrown out God, basically, and embraced evil. Harlan Abraham, love your name!
@neon-kitty
@neon-kitty Рік тому
@@Svensk7119 I mean, he doesn't seem to have denied the other gods' existence, he "just" stopped worshipping them and closed their temples (thereby stripping their priests of power). But yeah, like I said, I do think Akhenaten probably believed in his new religion (the hymns he wrote for the Aten certainly sound like the words of a true believer). But Aten had already started becoming more popular under his father Amenhotep III and I wouldn't be surprised if that rise in popularity (that eventually led to Akhenaten believing in it) was politically motivated. And some of Akhenaten's religious decision-making may have been influenced by political concerns, as well, even if he truly believed in his new doctrine.
@Svensk7119
@Svensk7119 Рік тому
@@neon-kitty I am sure. I just think it is a little cart-before-the-horse. If he truly believed, his political motives would have come from that. They would have reinforced his religion. His father appears to have been slightly lazy, in a poetic sense. (My opinion only, a'course). He fell into one habit of address, when there were so many poeticisms in the language. Maybe he was religiously big for his britches, but that is pure conjecture. Number IV, however.... he went the whole nine yards. And twice again! He sounds like a convert, and there is no zealot like a convert. Changing his name? Check. Altering religious conventions built over centuries? Check. Restructuring his court to accommodate? Check. These drastic changes all sound of conversion. Perhaps he had these beliefs in situ for sometime, but Something had to change for him to bring them forth. The other thing he seems is a narcissist. All he did made himself more important. He seems to have been some degree of unhinged, as well. Somewhere between Sadam Hussein and Adolf Hitler, though I mean that for unhingement only. I have heard nothing of him being murderous.

Excellent episode. I have often wondered about a possible connection between the monotheistic tendencies of Akhenaten and change to monotheism in Judaism. This is the first show I have seen in which it is mentioned and your mentioning of the similar texts is new information for me. I have always looked at the chronology - the Jewish population in the Levant was polytheistic to a point just after Akhenaten's reign, then it adopted monotheism. Any Jews in Egypt during his reign would have been exposed to monotheism. The migration of the Egyptian Jews to the Levant happened about a century later (c1225 BCE if I recall correctly) which coincides quite nicely with, i.e. preceding the transformation from polytheism to monotheism in Judaism. I am certain there are many published papers - scholarly research - on the topic that would be fascinating to read.

I've always thought that most of Akenhaten's reforms reeked of someone wanting to undermine the power of priesthoods and other power structures that he (possibly) felt had gained too much power. From the possible worship of his powerful (and thus likely respected) father, the exclusion of a priesthood in his new religion to the herculean undertaking of building a new administrative capital (which I would deem more easily defended) my admittedly layman opinion is that it's an avenue worth investigating. Remembering that these societal structures weren't completely uprooted and seemingly instituted a reasonably extreme damnatio memoriae after reinstalling themselves after his immediate successors, it's really no wonder why his reputation is lousy. That being said it is extremely likely that the complete societal upheaval resulting from this proposed war against the theocratic organisation would have prevented him from being a competent ruler.

That's really interesting. If I were to let my mind wander, I would imagine that the idea was definitely radical and had positive effects on society, being a God to ALL beings, not just to specific people, and also showing signs of affection to family has benefits to society. I also couldn't help but think that he insisted his body be represented in a more true realistic manner rather than the standard perfect manly body which we know pharaohs who ate well never had... But yes, this will be deemed heresy since the other gods/patron-saints already have a dedicated following

As indicated in other comments, a follow-up subject would be: "To what extent did mono- or heno-theistic Atenism influence early or proto-Judaism?" After Akhenaten's death, followers of his 'monotheistic' religion may have been forced to flee...and the next country over is Canaan. Some, including the psychologist Freud, have tried to connect this era to the Exodus narrative. However, Moses was not a historical figure (while his name is similar to that of the earlier Pharaoh Ahmosis I, this may be coincidental) and there is no archeological evidence for the Exodus narrative. This explanation also fails to include the various Canaanite gods (El/Elohim, Ba'al, etc) which play an important role in the Old Testament stories. Still, Egypt ruled over Canaan during Akhenaten's reign, so presumably Canaanites were strongly exposed to his religion during that time. A henotheistic or monolatrist form of Canaanite religion may thus have formed in Canaan via standard religion syncretism, without the need for any migration per se. A fascinating topic! Thanks for the video.
@azimondius8265

I personally think we can rule out the fact that Atenism was henotheistic, consider how in that time the names and records of other gods were wiped and discarded and weren't allowed to be worshipped, he didn't exactly ever deny their existence, and what is the definition of henotheism? The belief that there is more than one deity but only one of them is supreme, the others are worshipped but not to the extent of the supreme one; but then comes monolatriesm, i think this is the more likely, consider how like i said Akhenaten didn't exactly ever deny the existence of the other gods, he just didn't allow it and refrained from worshipping anyone but Aten. Of course this is just my opinion.
