It's a strange feeling to share this aspect of my life. I'm taking a break to go back to school, but here's a peek into the part of my life I've kept hidden from the internet for many years. I was asked if I wanted to film my last mission and use it as an opportunity to explain "Multi-Domain Operations" to the public. After much consideration, I decided that this topic (especially the cyber-domain issue) was important and chose to help inform the public.
My mission was to participate in a missile and torpedo engagement exercise at Pacific Missile Range Facility as part of RIMPAC 2018. RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific Exercise) is the largest naval exercise in the world. It's used to test interoperability and the ability to work as an international force.

I've kept this side of my life off the internet intentionally for 15 years. It's been strange being a dual UKpostsr/Missile Tester, because obviously this side of my life feels very important and the main driver for many of my life decisions. I'm more than just a person who makes videos and puts them on UKposts, and I feel like I'm kind of introducing you to the other side of me with this video. I thought long and hard about putting this online after I was asked if I wanted to film my last mission. I ultimately decided to post this video to let you know that Multi-Domain Operations are real.... and you're in the cyber domain. I didn't understand the full extent of what the implications of this were until I dug into it more. Over the course of the next several videos we're going to explore these cyber issues in a very real way. I hope you'll explore this with me.

It's always good to strive for an easier, safer, and better option, but deep down every one of us know there has got to be one last wall to break before falling. And each of us want that. With great power, comes great responsibility. And you've been very responsible about it. And we're getting smarter about it too. And I hope every single one of us strive for a smarter and more responsible way for it. (by us, I mean, humans.)

@@workman88 this is a common belief but also commonly dead wrong. Private sector companies develop military tech. But military tech is at least 10-20 years behind what’s available to the private sector. Military tech has to be battle hardened and excessively reliable. This alone means testing has to ensue for over a decade just to make it field ready. Virginia class submarines, the pinnacle of advanced submarine tech, are built with obsolete tech on board, like 30 year old obsolete tech. Then immediately after being commissioned are pulled into shipyard and “updated” with the “modern” tech, which is 10-20 years obsolete already. It’s a joke and a half to be honest. Just because it’s dressed up and looks pretty doesn’t mean it’s very advanced.

And I love the choice of the word grace (not getting what you do deserve). So often we are willing to write off someone's opinion because we judge it to be incorrect, and lately, we've started extending the write off to the individual as well. Maybe instead of asking "what's wrong with that person?" we could ask, "how can I disagree well with that person?" Thanks for an obviously very personal message, Destin. I enjoy all your videos and appreciate the work you put into them...but this may be my new favorite! (FWIW, my prior fav was lessons learned from interviewing the president...hhmmm...that one was also about disagreeing well...)

Yes! The video about interviewing the president introduced me the idea of how humans act very similarly to mathematical control systems and how important a negative feedback loop is to promote personal growth. I have subsequently mentioned this theory in all my interviews when questioned about how I respond to feedback (I also happen to work in the aerospace engineering field) and the interviewers have been blown away every time. Pretty sure it's the reason I get the jobs! So thanks Destin!
@ThomRigsby
@ThomRigsby 5 років тому
Hey @@richardstrum6606, awesome point! I'm familiar with Aumann's argument and at least as far as I understand it, it applies to single variable interpretations. Destin's point at the outset was that each of our worldviews is influenced by our perspective, kind of like the three blind men describing the elephant. Each of them was correct considering the limited perspective they had, yet all of them were incorrect when considering the full picture. So if we can agree that, given the full picture we should both come to the same conclusion, then maybe our take away should be that when we are in disagreement I should carefully consider both sides of the argument to ensure I'm seeing the full picture. A great way to practice that is to argue for something you disagree with, thus forcing you into more fully examining why someone would see things from a perspective different than your own.

Being in the office and checking emails is a far cry from where i was before, but for 80% of the ppl i work with, there is always this separation. Wake up America, the MIC "DEEP STATE" has been using IIA deception on Americans ever since Obama took office? Do some research and you will find this all started way back during the Regan administration when the military decided it would be an awesome idea to create a massive surveillance system of American citizens. There was the usual Congressional hearings decrying this blatant attempt against American privacy so they held fake hearings and pretended the projects were dismantled. Instead they simply moved the projects to civilian control managed by retired military personnel thus spawning Google & Facebook and a host of other "Social Apps" we now depend on for as our PUBLIC FORUM. Do not for a minute think that the current capabilities of NSA and other massive covert and overt surveillance systems are under control by Congress. We are at a major crossroad in our Republic? On one side we have the DEEP STATE which has completely corrupted every government agency you can think of. On the other side are the OUTSIDERS like POTUS who is trying to at least slow it down until he can make the necessary changes to undo some of the damage. However I think eventually it will all end when the brainwashed current K12 generation with Marxist Communist ideology takes the reins of power. At that point we can assume the complete destruction of our Republic will be irreversable...

Watching this was very interesting to say the least. I found it very sad in a way as I have been in the ship repair industry ever since I got out of the Navy many years ago and have repaired the USS Racine. I worked on several LST's along with many other class's of ships and the one thing I did notice was where the missile impacts were and the damage that was inflicted had there been a crew onboard. The one on the Port side would have taken out DC Central which would have eliminated the repair effort in combat to save the ship. The torpedo hit was another one that like you said was the end of the ship and also would have taken a heavy toll on the crew. I was on the USS Anchorage LSD 36 which was the target ship as well before this exercise I think. I am still repairing ships and my son followed and is doing the same as well. The work we do we cannot really talk about but having my son working in the same area at least we can talk about it to each other. The talk after that you had with the General was also very interesting and makes me wonder why we are at the point we are now if we know what they are doing. I mean a blind man can see this but then we in the defense industry sometimes have a better insight than the general public.

You said it perfectly Destin, "The biggest threat right now is division." How much more relevant does this video seem now. I truly believe that if America does not get its sense of unity back, the spirit of unity and american pride we had back in WW1 and WW2, then we will crumble from within. Thank you Destin and General Brown for drawing our attention to the new domains of battle. This video is like a a security alarm, it lets us know the enemy is in our house, but we have to get out of bed and handle it ourselves.

The mainstream media is the real problem
@brianstanton8296
@brianstanton8296 3 роки тому
@@PatrickBenoit10 Yep, and when over 90% of the media outlets in our country are owned by just 6 companies. You can imagine how easy it is to decide what the country will and won't hear in their news. I'm sure foreign attacks like this don't just come through internet videos, it also comes through media. Absolutely.
@TheGrumbliestPuppy
@TheGrumbliestPuppy 3 роки тому
@@PatrickBenoit10 The real problem is people aren't taught how to vet sources. Small, independant and hyperpartisan tabloids/blogs are just as terrible as the big cancers like CNN and Fox. The most boring sources are usually the most credible, like Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, but people don't want to read anything that doesn't consistently support their "side".
@JWPSmith21
@JWPSmith21 3 роки тому
@@TheGrumbliestPuppy A large part is unwillingness to compromise or trying to understand one another. People are pulling further and further apart. Politics has been becoming more and more authoritarian right for decades and decades. Now, it's become you're either extreme authoritarian right, or you're against it. There can't be compromise when even the middle ground is at such an absolute extreme. There's no wiggle room for compromise. It got there from compromise after compromise not being fair between the two sides, but rather slightly favoring one side over the other. Time and time again over a very long time. I honestly don't know how to resolve that. Theoretically I do, but practically I don't. People want to compromise, but there's no room to do that anymore. Even most of the people in the comments section here are claiming that it's this issue or that, all while actually showing that they see other Americans as the problem, treating others almost as if they're the ones who should be stamped out, instead of the misinformation and misunderstanding. It's an "us vs them" mentality between fellow Americans, as Destin mentioned in his own video. The comments section are immediately turning to that, even if they don't say it directly.

thanks Jaegarharper, I am hoping for a day where we can post an honest opinion online without kneejerk hatred being spewed our way. This would defuse some conflicts as well.

I think the general shows great wisdom by realizing that the human component is the most crucial in any event, even war. I just hope that the world keeps changing in a direction where armed conflict is no longer necessary as well as the competition for resources.... Ultimately every problem's solution lies in the personal transformation of each individual, where one trades fear, anger and ignorance, for creativity, understanding and empathy. Great video btw! During the Vietnam War, I was a junior officer (Captain) in US Army Special Forces ("Green Berets" in their early years). I was very well trained, at no small expense to the US Army. That was 50 years ago, and our understanding of our mission was similar to what Gen Brown was saying - because of my job in Vietnam, usually I was given a specific mission, and the information, tools, troops and time that I needed to do it, then told to go do it and rarely told how to do it, unless it involved very complex coordination. We usually succeeded because of this freedom to operate. This was why I enjoyed what I was doing - I (usually) had maximum autonomy with minimum command interference - even as a relatively junior commander, and we operated as a team. I also had the advantage of having some of the best soldiers in the US Army under my command. We had access to other forces - US and Allied air, sea and not so much cyber, but certainly electronics, and of course the human domain. The Space domain came later. We worked as a multidomain team, but it was only after the Vietnam War, and several mission failures which taught the US defense establishment the need for a more cohesive force structure, linked fully, that our military began to develop as Gen Brown described as the current force structure. I did not make the Army my career, but the experience helped shape my life in my later profession. This was a very interesting video - Thanks for doing it!
