A history documentary on the Great Illyrian Revolt against Rome. Brave the freezing darkness of Conqueror’s Blade Season VI with a FREE 7-day Premium Account! = patron.me/Invicta-CBVI
In this documentary we explore one of the unsung wars of Roman history which gets lost in the shadows of more famed conflicts like the Punic Wars, the Gallic Wars, the Civil Wars, the Parthian Wars, and more. Yet the Great Illyrian Uprising should not be forgotten as it was an extremely consequential event of the era. The war featured nearly 1 million rebels, saw the deployment of more legions than anytime since the civil wars, threatened Rome itself, and ultimately sowed the seeds for the disastrous Ambush of the Teutoburg Forest at the hands of the traitor Arminius.
Stay tuned for more full documentaries on Roman wars and other fascinating topics revolving around the Battle of Teutoburg. As you can imagine, I've been heavily inspired by the Netflix show Barbarians and can't wait to cover more of the history they merely touched on. Enjoy and see you in the next one.

PROUD ILLYRIAN DARDANIAN Albanians are Illyrians That is why over 50 graves from Belgrade from 2000 years ago all belong to haplogroup E-V13. That is why the exact ancestral Haplogroup of E-V13 was found in the zemunica cave from 8500 years ago and in Pannonia from 7000 years ago. @@gustavfrye2736 That's what kicked off the wars in ERE with the Germanic tribes. They asked for refugee status in the Empire as they were fleeing Atilla the Hun. The Emperor said yes, and gave them the border land as a buffer zone, but corrupt officials took their children into slavery and screwed them over, so they started a rebellion in the middle of the Empire. It contributed a lot to the weakening of the ERE, and the fall of the WRE.

I mean, is seems ridiculous and unfair to be obsessed the way Albanians are with them. What if you are descended from Illyrians? How that practically will change anything? What if also Serbs and Croats have also illyiran descent... Why Albanian nationalism is going so to the extremes to actually speak for hidden history or a conspiracy against Albanians made by Serbs...sometimes they say also Greeks are the conspirators and Greeks history is also Illyrian history and everything is fake made by the West...😵😵😵. This rebellion made the Romans send 8 legions from Germania to Illyria making the Teutoberg disaster possible, this would be a pretty interesting alternate history scenario.
@freddovich7925
@freddovich7925 3 роки тому
Oh yeah. Just imagine. Teutoburg never happens, or, if it does, it can't happen with more than 5 legions and will be less succesful. It probably wouldn't happen though, as the German chiefs would be too scared of the retaliation. Germania is conquored onto the Elbe, which becomes the final frontier in Augustus' plan of final frontiering the entire border of the empire. Instead of the Rhine, the Elbe becomes the division between civilization and barbarians. Rome would spend immense amounts of resources and manpower in fortifying this border, as they did with the Rhine. It would take decades still, of course, to completely pacify the region: the Elbe runs from Prague through Germany to the North Sea; it basically splits Germany. Adding this region as a few provinces to the empire would be very costly but so worth it. The tribes would assimilate, and the empire would have a gigiantic bufferzone between the rich provinces and the eventual invaders. I'm not so sure what this region would provide the empire though, apart from the early annihalation of future threats and a lot of timber. It might make the invasion of Dacia more feasible, and even prompt more expansion to cover the gap between Dacia and the source of the Elbe. Maybe these regions would strengthen the empire, maybe it would be weakened by the massive land with almost no economic benefit that just always needs more money and men to maintain.
@timmerk7363
@timmerk7363 3 роки тому
@@freddovich7925 I think the quastion depends entirely on the pace of assimilation by the germanic tribes. If they assimilate relativly fast Rome would gain more tribes as a source for auxilia, a maybe more beneficial border and some enemies less. If they don't assimilate so fast (pretty likely), Rome suffers constant rebellion and loses more blood than it is worth. In that case Rome retreats sooner or later, with more or less the same results as the actual events. I think this is more likely, but obviously depending how long it takes until they retreat, the butterfly effect would change much more. For example a longer Roman occupation could lead to a higher population and a higher urbanisation in the region, with immense implications for possibly the entire european history.
@salimbenchekroun7543
@salimbenchekroun7543 3 роки тому
@@freddovich7925 The romans were already overstreched. At that time, Germania was worth little in terms of resources or manpower. Even northen Gaul wasn't worth much. Plus, rivers make for a far worse line of defense than seas, oceans, deserts or mountains. It would have been better to fortitfy the Central Massif than the Rhine. The freed resources could then have been used to consolidate or expand into the rich and urbanized east. While arguably, the Danube is also a bad line of defense (better than nothing) at least the tribes living there would eventually pay back and become the backbone of the roman soldiery. Another approach would have been to control the sea and defensible key points (small islandes, fortified costal cities, key fortress, ...). A concept that would be utilized by the Portuguese Empire to great effect (Portugual had less manpower and land than the other nations of its time, yet it managed to punch above its weight class and to even stand toe to toe with the Ottomans using this strategy.)

Demonstration of Albanian linguistics which is very old ( Paleo-Balkan / Thraco-Illyrian ) via Pelasgian : 📜 Illyria ( Illyr ) = I lirë This is one of the two most important ethnic branches of the Pelasges. The other branch is the Thracians. The Illyrians were considered by the Greeks as an independent people who were never subjugated by the Greeks in spite of the three or four "trading posts" that they had in Illyria. Now "I lirë", in Albanian, means "free, independent" . The original name of Kosovo was Dardania . 📜 Dardania = Dardhë In ancient times, two "Dardanias" existed. The Balkan Dardania and the Trojan Dardania, in Asia Minor. That of the Balkans occupied, roughly, the location of the current Kosovo. The Dardanians, of Pelasgic stock (🇦🇱 Thraco-Illyrian etc ...), have immortalized the strait ( the Dardanelles ) which still bears their name. From the earliest antiquity this region was known for its orchards where pear trees were numerous. It is, certainly, for this reason that it was called "country of the pears". Now "pear", in Albanian means "Dardhë". These Dardanians would be at the origin of the Trojan civilization. Indeed according to the legend "Dardanos", born in Samothrace (Pelasgians Island, before its occupation, much later, by the Greeks), was son of Zeus and Electra. He emigrated to Asia Minor with his brother lasion. He was welcomed by Teucer who gave him his daughter in marriage (Batteia or Batieia). He was the founder of the city of Dardania and probably of Troy. The Italian traditions make him a descendant of "Corinthos", Etruscan prince of Cortona. Whether he was of Etruscan origin or not does not change his Pelasgian origin since the Etruscans were of the same ethnic stock. 📜 Thrace = Trakët, Trashët(të), i trashë This is one of the two main branches of the Pelasges. Thrace, according to Strabo ( Book VII), was bordered to the north by the Danube, the Aegean Sea to the south, the Hellespont to the southeast, to the southwest the river Strymon (under King Philip II), the river Nestos (under Alexander the Great) having served as a border with Macedonia and to the west Illyria where the boundary was never well established and exactly known. According to Herodotus (V,3): "The Thracians are, after the Indians, the most numerous people which is in the world. If the Thracians had only one chief and agreed between them, they would form an invincible people, and certainly the most powerful of all, in my opinion ". In Albanian " trashë, i trashi, të trashët " = fat, the fat or corpulent. In the pejorative sense i Trashë means coarse or peasant, as opposed to "city dweller" ( implied "civilized") . 📜Thraco-Illyrian,messapian. 🇦🇱 Albanian 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ( translation ) 📜: A (ill) = 🇦🇱: A = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: is that ? 📜: Aker = 🇦🇱: Acar = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: cold, icy, coldness 📜: Amolusta (ill)/ 📜: Amalusta (thr) = 🇦🇱: Amël, amëlsi (gheg) = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: sweetness, sweet 📜: Ania, Oania = 🇦🇱: Anije (anïa) = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: ship, boat, vessel 📜: Ank (ill) = 🇦🇱: Ankth = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: anxiety 📜: Ar = 🇦🇱: Ar = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: Gold (metal) 📜: As = 🇦🇱: As = 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿: Ni 📜: -At = 🇦🇱 -At = characteristic suffix of Illyrian ethnic names: Dalmat(es), autariat(es), Asseriat(es). Yeah. In the events of the first decade of the millennium the Great Illirian Revolt is the main course, Teutoburg is the side dish. Here they treated them like the revolt was just a test for Teutoburg. Severus, at Cibalae, thus leading the minor one of the two Roman armies involved, had more men, and more eperienced, than Varus at Teutoburg.

in reality, the Illyro Roman wars began centuries earlier..Agron Teuta Genti ect fought against the Romans...but it is also true that from the 2nd century to the 6th century the majority of the Roman emperors were of iliric origin.. Costandine Justinian ect

i personally think Severus is the real hero of this story. Dude was the first to respond and marched with only 3 legions and won a major fight then consolidated his forces into 5 legions and broke another Illyrian assault. The guy won victory's he had no business winning not to mention how he held out at the battle for Cibalae against a vastly more numerous enemy with 3 battered legions and 2 newly raised and inexperienced ones.

More than just adopting their tactics, I think the Illyrian Revolt was one of the big things that convinced Arminius that driving Rome out of Germania was necessary. He would've seen firsthand the brutal reprisals the Romans carried out against the Illyrians and, knowing the rebellious and independent nature of his own people, would've certainly realized that it was only a matter of time before the Germanic tribes would be on the receiving end of Roman retribution.

Illyria got conquered by Roman Empire becouse Romans were better organised . it was the Illyrian Legions and Illyrian soldiers in the service to Rome that became the Praetorian Guard stageing a coup d’Etat and that brought Illyrian Emperors who ruled the Roman Empire East and West for Centuries to come.....We did not fare that bad considering that we turned the table on Romans . and ruled them as we wished...- Illyrians that did not get assimilated and romanized in full even though they were under lots of pressure from Slavic invasion and settlements managed to survive as one of Illyrian tribes known as Albani around Albanoi today Central Albania to emeerge as a successor nation of Albania and DARDANIA ( Republic of Kosovo ) These newborn Illyrian /Albanian countries are ourrounded by Million other Albanians and people with Illyrian roots in neighboring Countries in Former Yugoslavia, Greece, Italy and Turkey We are hard cookie to be swalloved .We survieved for thousand of years being in the crossroads of Europe and faceing many odds and challenges from slavic migratins to turkish occupation of our lands for 5 centurris . We managed to preserve our language one of the oldest live languages in Europe and culture . We managed to liberatie our lands partially in Albania , Daedania ( Republic of Kosovo )and North Macedonia Without Illyrian Emperor Constantine there would be no Christianity in Europe and no Costantinople Istanbul in the Bosphorusin.: without Justinian the Grate no Laws as we know now

great video, great animation with maps including troop movements etc. well structured, clearly shown, very informtive. more please. to the ending question: I don't think that Rome itself was in danger. as the 2nd Punian war shows the Romans were capable of long term wars on own ground and of harsh sacrifices. they 'd have managed it somehow especially facing an enemy with not much recources to lead such a campaign. But it could have lead to a break up of several provinces as the following uprising of Arminius prove.

After the Great Illyrian Revolt, the Romans deported- split-resettled Illyrian tribes within Illyria itself and to Dacia , sometimes causing whole tribes to vanish ( the Deraemestae-30 decuriae ➕ the Docleatae-33 decuriae ) and new ones to be formed from their remains, some of them mixed with Celtic tribes ( celticization).Your channel is fascinating, impressive..love it!😍

Thank you for the documentary. My opinion is that Rome would have recovered following a defeat. After all they were able to face bigger treats, such Gauls incursions, Punic wars, Crassus defeat. It was too strong to be destroyed after a battle. Few years later they lost battles to Dacians but at the end the war was won.. Arminius getting the idea of a Germanic revolt during this campaign is extraordinary, innovative and very plausible. Excellent point.

@@Universal.. LOL! How did you manage to gather a list of "specialists" none of whom lived and worked post-WWII and most of whom lived in the 19th and even 18th century? People who were not archaeologists and even within their own field of knowledge (e.g. linguists) lived in an era where there was a very low volume of information. You even managed to shove in known pseudo-historians such as Fallmerayer, people who even in their days were the ridicule of the scientific community and who today are mentioned as what to avoid in the field of the study history! Why is it that you Albanians have to compete with Skopjans in propaganda? It is the curse of the Balkans or something? There is no such thing as "fact: Illyrians are ancestors of Albanians". Roman writers clearly mentioned that Illyrians had lost their native language and by the late Roman Empire they were fully latinised in the north and fully hellenised to the south. The Albanian language shows none of that. It shows the following influences by sequence of ancestry 1 - first foreign influence is late Roman Empire eastern Latin 2 - second foreign influence is ..... Slavic!!! 3 - third foreign influence is medieval Italian 4 - fourth influence is late medieval Greek, pretty much modern Greek - and this only in the Tosk dialect of the south (Tosks are a known Albanian-Greek mix produced in the 13th-14th century as Albanians moved southwards from modern day northern Albania) At no time Albanian language seems to have been spoken between ancient Latin and ancient Greek. This makes no sense if Albanian language is the direct descendant of Illyrian. The sequence of foreign linguistic influences clearly shows that Albanian language came in Middle Ages from a place nearby the Empire, probably the para-danubian regions. And it rings well with the fact that there has been found a medieval manuscript in western Romania of an uknown local tribe there which spoke a language that is eerily similar to Albanian - a fact that Albanians want to hush today as it does not ring well with their fabricated history. Are Albanians descendants of Illyrians? Sure, partly. But they have absorbed Slavs and Greeks (Southern Albanians look and talk like Greeks, northern Albanians look like Eastern Europeans -- huge phenotype and genetic differences in this small nation). But there is no continuity. It would be fun if we found ancient Illyrian texts... somehow Illyrians only wrote in Greek and Latin but if they ever wrote in their own language be sure that Albanians would destroy the evidence to hide out the fact that modern Albanian language has nothing in common with ancient Illyrian. Same goes for Skopje, and until recently (hopefully not anymore) same went for Bulgaria as well....

When Rome's final victory took place in 9 AD, the Illyrian warriors did not want to surrender to the Roman invaders but committed mass suicide by jumping from the fortress in Vranduk, which still exists, next to the main road in central Bosnia. After The Great revolt, the Romans divided Illyria into parts, and sent the Illyrians to fight in the most remote parts of the empire, because it posed the greatest danger to Rome. According to the natives, the Romans were brutal and made things easier for the Goths, Avars, Slavs, Ottomans who came later. The reason why this revolt was so successful at the beginning is that same as Herman/Arminius Bato of Daesitiates was an roman auxiliary leader who knew of roman tactics. The whole auxiliary force drafted in Illyria to combat Marcomanni revolted 'cause they didn't get paid. After this revolt romans did learn their lesson to not let any drafted auxiliary or for that matter legion to serve in their native region.

I had a pretty big essay about this back in college when i was studying history... and I gotta say - definitely lots of detail is left to be desired in this video. I have been asking you guys to do a video on Bato's rebellion for a long time and this one has covered some very basic details. but I really hope you will go into detail more in your follow up video. The rebellion itself didn't happen because of slavery that the Empire imposed on the tribes, but also because of insane taxes, which were needed to fuel the Roman war machine up north. The map you guys use is wrong, capturing modern day Bosnia and areas towards east and south, while for some reason the Delmatae area of coastal modern day Croatia is for some reason left out, even though that's where the rebellion itself started, with the Bato of Daesitiatae at it's lead. It's a shame you guys didn't mention how that Cavalry Prefect that wrote one of the main accounts of the event, Velleio Patercolo, who was following Tiberius, how he wrote about the insane numbers of Roman soldiers in the camp in Siscia, that he hasn't seen so many Roman legions at one place ever. Also you kind of completely left out the fact that the 2 Bato's both started the rebellion at the same time, unplanned, and they worked independently until they actually joined forces later on, video gives the impression that this was a huge plan. I do hope you will actually cover how the Bato of Breuci betrayed the Bato of Dalmatae, because he was bribed by the empire, told he will gain more idependence and self governance, his Breuci tribe, which the Bato of Breuci accepted, later on Bato of Dalmatae actually traveled all the way from down south, up north to punish his partner, and then went back to Burnum, where the deciding battle was fought between Romans and remaining Illiriyans ( AND also the romans who defected to the Illiryan side, famously, when Bato Daesitiate decided it's time to stop the slaughter and told his warriors that it's time to drop their weapons, the Roman Deserters were actually the most fierce opposition, because they knew that if They put down their weapons, they would be executed for desertion. )

I knew Tiberius was a good general, but my opinion about him as a man in the army keeps improving. He was a prudent but extremely efficient war machine. Unlike the other general of the time, he accurately calculated his moves, making sure there was no margin for mistakes. Slowly taking his enemies by suffocation, burning their land, pillaging their villages and selling them into slavery, all to minimize risks and loss of precious soldiers. I can see why, after rhe death of Agrippa, he became Augustus right hand.

Proof of the Illyrian-Pelasgian origin of Albanians is provided by the study of the Albanian language. Despite some points of similarity in structure and phonetics, the Albanian language is entirely distinct from the languages spoken by neighboring natonalities. This language is particularly interesting as the only surviving representative of the alleged Thraco-Illyrian group of languages, which formed the primitive discourse of the inhabitants of the Balkan Peninsula. However, great difficulties, as, owing to the absence of the first literary monuments, no certainty can be reached regarding its previous forms and subsequent events. Eventually the Albanian language was permeated by a large number of foreign words, mainly from ancient Greek or Latin, which is younger than the Albanian language, but there is some indication that the early Illyrian language manifested some degree of influence on the grammatical development of the languages now spoken in the Balkan Peninsula. There is, however, one very striking peculiarity in this entire question: that the Albanian language allows a reasonable explanation of the meaning of the names of ancient Greek Gods as well as the rest of the mythological creations. The explanations are so convincing to confirm the opinion that ancient Greek mythology had been borrowed, in its entirety, from the Illyrian-Pelasgians. As it was mentioned before, Zeus survives as "Zot" in the Albanian language. The invocation of his name is the common form of oath among modern Albanians. Athena (Latin Minerva), the goddess of wisdom as expressed in speech, should obviously derive its derivation from the Albanian "E Thëna," which means "simply speech". Thetis, the goddess of waters and seas, would seem to be only Albanian "Det" which means "the sea". It would be interesting to note that the word "Ulysses", if in its Latin or Greek form "Odysseus", means "the traveler" in the Albanian language, according to like the word "udhë", that stands for "the route "and" the journey ", is written with" d "or" l ", both forms being in use in Albania. Such examples can be provided ad libitum (libitum). No such facility is, however, permitted by the ancient Greek language, unless the explanation is an obligatory and distorted one; but in many cases even a mandatory and distorted so is not available at all. Moreover, we must not forget the fact that Zeus was God Pelasgian par excellence, his original religious building being Dodona. proof that we are Illyrians. The queen who reigned in the Balkans was called Teuta and this is a 1000% Albanian name and the country illir means free. Proof that we are also the ancient Greeks: out of 2 Examples of names of gods and deities prehellenic derived from Albanian - pelasgic. Apart from any prejudice, the etymology of names which we are going to present here, conforms strictly to an interpretation based on the conn growth of ancient languages, and especially of the Albanian. The only one to give the correct meaning to the names of certain gods, considered Greek without being never such. The examples which have just been presented here, confirm the importance of the langu Albanian as a language which can give a reasoned answer to the questions of pre-Hellenic paleography, where the names of the gods Pelasgians had been Greekized and pronounced without being able to give them an interpretation valid. Follow the etymolog below ie appropriation of the names of the gods through the Albanian language. Rhea. Zeus' mother was Rhea, which derives from the Albanian word " re ”, And means cloud. What can give birth the cloud, if not the storm, lightning and thunder? So the mighty voice of the cloud sky them from the Universe, the voice = zë or za, hence the Ze (us) = (the Voice), in Albanian Zot (God). Ze us derives from the Albanian "za or ze" = voice. Thunder is the voice of God, it is Ze (us) = Ze - Za = the Voice, Zot (the God) of the Albanians. Athena in albanian Athin at : this name derives from the Albanian "e thena" = to say, in the sense of the Word, the Word of God, hence the goddess of wisdom. Another Albanian etymology of Athina = Ati (father) + n / A (mother), hence the protective goddess, Athina (father - mother) in this sense. Kron (bone), der ive of the Albanian words Koh (time) + r ron (lively), or Ke + r r we (that live) in the sense than hard (durable) to give a sense of the perpetuity of time. Ouran (bones) of the Greeks, Vran (bone) = sky, derived from Albanian vran = cloudy; that is to say the earth (Téa, G éa) produced the clouds, the cloudy

Because after ww2 albania was self isolated and western historians had no contact to albanian historians. Thats the reason today we dont know much about illyrians.

If the world would have the courage to talk about Pelasgian-Illyrians we would have the real history of Eurpoe! At that time this was known as Illyricum Peninsula!

Pelasgian was pro-greek. Todays albanian has nothing to do with illyrians. Provide any historical sources proving what you say. And not from Albanians who are the clown of the science history. Also provide any historical script that shows any relation with today Albanian language and culture.

@@Giorgosprg "It is clearly evident today that the Albanians are descendents of the Illyrians, thanks mainly through modern linguistic science." - Noel Malcolm, "The Albanians" One of the most respected English historians in the world 👌 Your turn now Jorgo, prove to us that today's "Greeks" have anything to do with ancient Greeks 🤔 because the rest of the world doesnt know that until your "independence movement" you were calling yourselves "Romio" and had no recollection who Pericles and Plato were until the Germans and English refreshed your memory 😉 but we'll keep that as our little secret. 😂 Magjyp mutit.

@@mmaallday First of all, Noel Malcom is no guarantee for any historical prove on the matter. He is rather involved in a highly nationalistic debated centered around Kosovo and many scholars accuse him of being "Pro-Albanian". In the Book "The wars of the Balkan Peninsula : their medieval origins" by Alexandru Madgearu and Martin Gordon it says: "It is true that some Albanian words and place-names descend from Illyrian, but it was proven by a great specialist in the Balkan languages, Gustav Weigand, that the language itself was not of Illyrian stock." "Gustav Weigand, by which he proved that Albanians are neither Illyrians nor their descendants." Kaplan Burović - Who Are Albanians? (2008, p.128) We have barely any remains of the Illyrian language to prove anything. So much for that. When it comes to the Greeks, it is a completely different matter. The Greek language has an unbroken literary tradition since the Illiad and the Odyssee were composed. There was never a period in history where there was nothing written in Greek since that. From Homer to Hesiod, to Plato and Aristotle, Strabo, Pausanias, the New Testament, Marcus Aurelius, Procopius, the Epics of Digenis Akritas, Gemistos Pletho, Demetrios Chalkokondyles, The Erotokritos, Solomos, Constantine Cavafy and Odysseas Elytis. Genetically it has also been proven that the ancient Greeks are the main ancestors of the modern Greeks. Quote: "When the researchers compared the DNA of modern Greeks to that of ancient Mycenaeans, they found a lot of genetic overlap. Modern Greeks share similar proportions of DNA from the same ancestral sources as Mycenaeans, although they have inherited a little less DNA from ancient Anatolian farmers and a bit more DNA from later migrations to Greece." www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/08/greeks-really-do-have-near-mythical-origins-ancient-dna-reveals

@@mmaallday this guy doesnt seem reliable, with a quick search he is "marred by his sympathies for its ethnic Albanian separatists, anti-Serbian bias, and illusions about the Balkans". Also can you give me any ancient source or do you have to read the Greeks (again!). Can you share any ancient ruins, artifacts anything showinh the relation between you. As for the Greeks, i suppose you visit greece. Just go to Parthenon read the marbles then take a newspaper to read and you will get the answer. Also share proofs that pyrros was albanian as well as alexander. You can send links from ancient scripts referring to their albanian origins
