During the war, many Ukrainians personally or indirectly faced something they had never thought of before - post-traumatic stress disorder. The horrors of battle, captivity, occupation, and enemy shelling can come back to those who have experienced them, and such people need full rehabilitation and psychological assistance. The symptoms of PTSD include intrusive flashbacks, nightmares, depression, irritability, and the desire to harm oneself. According to a study conducted in 2022, 57% of Ukrainian citizens are at risk of developing this disorder.
In the new issue of WAS, we will talk about the history of PTSD in the military and civilians at a time when people did not yet understand what it was. You will find out what hints of a veteran's traumatized psyche are found in the Homeric Odyssey, why Charles Dickens was afraid of transportation, how Freud proposed to treat traumatized psyche, and why soldiers did not dare to talk about their psychological problems until about the Vietnam War.
