About the wireless headphones, it pretty much comes down to how good your DAC (digital to analog converter) is. With wired headphones, the DAC used is the one built-in to the phone. So it can be much cheaper since you are not paying for a DAC, batteries and bluetooth receiver/transmitter. But considering the DAC from your phone cannot be improved, buying a high end bluetooth headphone will usually sound better than a high end wired headphone (when listening on your phone). There are even headphone amplifiers with high end DACs that connect via bluetooth to your phone and then drive your wired headphones. Since bluetooth only transmits digital data, it does not affect the quality of the sound directly. (It does affect the sound if it makes you buy a worse headphone because the bluetooth makes it more expensive).
@OrangeCat__
@OrangeCat__ 3 роки тому
bluetooth headphones usually use lossy audio encoding, wired headphones and a good DAC will almost always sound better
@vali69
@vali69 3 роки тому
Well it's not like phones come with 3.5mm jacks anymore... those who do have it tho are either cheap ones or a couple of the few gaming phones out there... either way it can be said that there are some good and cheap dongle dacs like the usbc apple one or expensive ones like those ibasso ones that even have 4.4mm connection

Good video! By the way another problem with most wireless earbuds is also that they are basically physically too small to provide good audio quality. I mean is just made from waves in the air, so a speaker has to oscillate to produce a sound but in those small pieces packed with a battery, an antenna and a chip, there isn't much room to oscillate. So you either loose volume or (even worse) details in frequency. So a pro tip: Just pick over-ear headphones. They provide much better noise-cancellation anyway out-of-the-box. They also don't fall off from your ears as easy without searching for the right plug, module or earbud. They have more room for better speakers and a bigger battery. Now the best thing to search for. Pick a headphone which allows using a cable even if you pick a pair which works wireless. Why, you may think? Because even your headphones bigger battery will become worse over time and maybe sometimes you get too lazy to charge them. So in any case you can still just plug in a cable and are good to go. You can even use them for years. The real question is: Why do not all headphones allow usage with a cable? Why do phones loose a headphone jack? That's the most reliable and highest quality way of listening to audio. It's a physical disadvantage to not provide this possibility.

When there's an issue, it will eventually be patched. This issue was patched in kernel 5.10. The problem with that is that some distros like to stay on old kernel versions, which makes them more vulnerable. Yes, the latest and greatest builds may be a little less stable, but they *will* be more secure. Rolling release is cool.

Bluetooth earphones are very decent for when you're in motion a lot. I've yet to to find a solution to wearing wired earphones that are actually comfortable. Although I care more for the heavy duty types with larger batteries that you wear around your neck. The most important difference has been no snapping cables. Which even on high quality braided earphones happens after a few years... Comparably my Li-ion battery is still going strong after two years and instead the cables of the earphones themselves show more wear.

Bad bluetooth headphone quality is not due to the Bluetooth protocol, Bluetooth is more than capable of sending a high quality audio stream. The issue with BT headphones is the cheap DACs (digital audio converter) that takes the Bluetooth signal and converts it into audio. Bluetooth headphones have many pros, yes they're more expensive, especially to get one that sounds the same as a wired set of headphones, however wireless in some cases is worth it, as well as the headset support that Bluetooth allows.

bluetooth is just very very short range and unsecure wifi. and i don't even use wifi where ever i can use ethernet(90% of the time). i also notices this battery issue as well . we recently bought a motion sensor and the switch is powered by ac but the sensor is powered by battery XD like WTF . if power goes out then the sensor is useless anyways. i instead opted to rig up my own adapter for it that powers it via usb instead of battery.

1. Open Bluetooth headphones with guitar picks 2. Remove PCB 3. Cut signal traces to op-amps 4. Solder one end of headphone cable to the driver input 5. Solder the other end to a headphone plug 6. Connect to the headphone jack on your device (if there's no headphone jack, throw it in the garbage and buy a better device).

This resembles the JWZ vs Clem (Linux Mint) discussion about screenlock vulnerability People value the convenience of bluetooth headsets etc, so techies insisting it's bad for security, while technically may be correct, isn't fundamentally very helpful

As most laptops today have anywhere from 1 to 4 type C ports (minus 1 if connected to power), personally (mine have 2 total) I'm forced to use bluetooth mouse. One port reserved for power and another for USB ethernet. Miss the good old days of having minimum 4 USBs + dedicated power connector

Current laptops are somehow even worse than I imagined, and I imagine that you can easily break them in half accidentally just by carrying them around in a bag. Absolute fucking garbage. There is no reason for a laptop to not have 10 USB-C ports these days. But that would require making them thicker and less flimsy, and slightly more expensive to make, so not happening.

So all you are saying then is that you are a compulsive buyer with too much spare money who doesn't do any research before buying expensive electronics products? I am still using a Lenovo Thinkpad X220 from 2011 as my daily driver laptop. It has a great keyboard, has three USB ports (more if I take the docking station), runs Gentoo Linux and is the best all-round computing device I have ever owned - so much so, I have four of them because I can buy that many for the price of a mid-range modern craptop, which are a complete waste of money.

What about gaming laptops? Look at the 2021 lenovo legion 5, upcoming gaming laptop with, get this: 4 usb a, 2 usb c ports(both with displayport connection and one supports charging), hdmi 2.1 port, 3.5mm headphone mic combo jack, ethernet port and finally lenovos proprietary charging connector... you can litterly plug 3 monitor into the laptop and still have 4 usb a ports available, or you sacrifice one of the usb c ports and you can then connect a hub for even more usb ports at the cost of only having 2 monitors connected to the laptop...

The only bluetooth peripheral I think it's acceptable to buy is the mouse, especially if its one that uses AA batteries and a usb dongle instead of bluetooth. Like the logitech g305 that I bough so I can take it with me on the go, it's really nice

even for a laptop, just get a wireless USB mouse with replaceable batteries. Good news is most bluetooth mice that I have encountered also use regular AA batteries. For now.

no bluetooth worries ! I dont let anyone come near my computer. And I prefer that as my "bluetooth protection". Btw ... although I do prefer my wired headset ( very high quality ), I don't have complaints about my bluetooth headset, AS LONG AS the codec is properly configured. And yes, all the high quality music I listen to come from flacs. ( btw Tool Rulez, already saw them live :P )

Hmmm... My first bluetooth audio device is still alive since 2011... 👀💦...I just need to replace the lithium cell on it. It sounds not great, but it's quite handy. It's quite a shame that the sound quality isn't great yet, especially during voice calls.

People always say that the batteries being lithium ion batteries is what causes them to die so quick, but I don't think that's the case. If you think of the nintendo DS and 3DS systems, those used rechargable li-ion batteries and I've never noticed one of those degrade over time. I can fire up my nintendo DS which hasn't been charged in a year and a half and it's perfectly fine while my old iphone will die if you leave it alone for a day or two

The reason bluetooth headphones have worse sound has nothing to do with signal reliability. The reason is bluetooth is a digital signal thus the DAC is in the headphones while jack is analogic signal and use the DAC in your phone. The issue (especially with earbuds) is a DAC in a portable device usually works with small capacitors and batteries due to size limitations. This strongly limit their abilities. However, the truth is a DAC in medium/high ends wireless headphones (which are usually pretty big) is better than the one in phones and thus give as sound as good if not better than same quality wired headphones (probably doesn't apply to computer tho)

are they going to fix bluez so it works or just patch the vuln and further break bluetooth support?
@kquote03
@kquote03 3 роки тому
The vulnerability was patched in october of 2020. There was actually a very big drama in the security community because the security team at intel (who found the exploit) didn't notify the right people (distro maintainers, kernel devs, etc) before publishing the findings.

There are many standards for bluetooth audio floating around and I don't doubt that a good one can match wired headphones. Maybe if you have a 3.5mm jack and the DAC on it sucks bluetooth audio could even be better.

Hm does this mean you could make a root exploit for android using bluetooth that bypasses crap like knox? I have a samsung galaxy a10e and havent really been able to find a root method for it yet, is android effected by this in the same way desktop linux is?

Why? Is this a problem in the kernel? Is this a problem in the firmware? What exactly is being exploited? Installing from image, Bluetooth is on at first boot. Then it’s just a race to see who wins, turning it off or the exploiter.
