Crucial bit of kit, I had the Martindale version of this tester until I blew the tip off. I had first fixed a job, and between the first and second fix another spark had done some work and connected my exposed cables to another circuit. Customer wasn’t happy... I wasn’t much happier either, but at least I was still upright.

Really good review. I currently have a Fluke T110 which, compared to this Metrel doesn't have a digital readout. But some of the points raise in your review have made me wonder whether my Fluke has those features too (the battery-out test, for example), so I'll check those out pretty soon. I'm not about to replace my T110, but based on what I've seen here, I'll definitely keep the Metrel MD1160 on a list of testers worth considering when I need a replacement.

Great video as always. Could you go into the differences between a pure tone (continuity) and a slightly buzzed tone. Also could be worth pointing out the reasons why you get continuity between neutral - line, neutral - cpc and line - cpc on a de-energised circuit, usually at a fitting and usually the cause of a slightly buzzed tone etc

That's actually quite a nice meter, great now I want one, I don't have a need for it but I want one. Those conformal shrouds do worry me as I have run across a lot of things where I could barely get the probes on and making contact and it gives me the impression it would increase the possibility of false negatives. Although maybe in the foreign electrical things are a standardized better to have that access? With the shrouded tips? I absolutely see the need for the shrouded contacts... I have a nice gouge mark in my multi meter probe.... But I've also tested a lot of things in the US market where I absolutely cannot test unless I take the cap off. I did recently get this cool meter which lets me increase or decrease the tip length. From the various UK electrical videos I've been watching, I find the audible warning very non-distinct as to what it's doing between the various makes that people use. Like OK is it warning me that there's live electric or is it worrying me that there's continuity?

Thank god you are doing these proving dead with tester videos keep doing them with the lockout and tagout do also a series on lock and tagout even when working alone in a building because the process of doing it even when you are working alone in a secured property keeps your thinking about the process more so ensuring that you have not assumed something. Lots of electricians even great ones on UKposts are still not locking and tagging out when they are in the property by themselves assuming that no one is around and will not enter the property. This morning I was listening to the E5 podcast involving Louise Taggart who lost her brother Michael an electrician that and the subsequent investigation by HSE indicated how lax we can all become and how assuming things can be deadly around electricity 45mA or less if you are smaller can kill you. @mathman0101
@mathman0101 3 роки тому
@@lsnogaming2893 that’s right and they need to keep doing them. I also made a specific point about locking off and tagout when you are working alone not because you expect someone to come to the property- that could happen but to be in that mindset and thinking as it involves conscious actions which can save lives even for electricians who think themselves very experienced-in a battle between electricity and an electrician there is only going to be one winner...

I'm in the market for one of these at the moment, but I'd love to know why none of them seem to have a retractable sleeve on the probe to allow easy testing in choc blocks, for example, without having to remove the sheaths and immediately lose them. The basic Martindale seems to have them, but that's bulky and doesn't have the lcd or continuity option. There also seems to be a massive difference in price between "brands' even when they are all probably made in the same factory with the same chip inside.
@kenbrown2808
@kenbrown2808 2 роки тому
my basic tester is the Ideal vol-con, and it has exactly the spring loaded retracting sleeve on the probes - you can latch them back, or use them in spring mode. it has no LCD, but if you need exact voltage, you can get your multimeter out. I also found, before I lost my original one, that it will self charge its continuity batteries, just by putting it on a live circuit for a few seconds.

My question is. Why do you need a voltage tester or why or in what situation would you want to use a voltage tester instead of your normal MM or Clamp meter to measure voltage or do FF.
@efixx
@efixx Рік тому
Clamp meters only work when current is flowing in a circuit. Multimeters can easily be set to wrong setting giving a false reading of a dead circuit
@ironwolf6849
@ironwolf6849 Рік тому
@@efixx Ok fair. But how would you answer that coming from a qualified artisan that works on Electrics and uses a multifunction clamp meter eg. (Chauvin Arnoux F205) or any other brand and auto or non auto ranging multimeter. Because I cannot see where you would Use or Need a Voltage tester like that If you get my point.

@efixx Рік тому
@@ironwolf6849 Here's our training module on safe isolation procedures and best practice - www.efixx.co.uk/Know%20How/introduction-to-safe-isolation-cpd - as you'll have seen in this video, a voltage indicator works if the batteries are missing or failed. Multimeters can be on the wrong setting DC, not AC, probes in the wrong socket etc. Plus, you still should use a proving unit to check the instrument is working.

@@dougijcw9758 Completely agree. For a start these only go up to 690V so not all that much use proving a 1000V circuit is dead! And yes, circuits with a potential for higher than 690V are very common particularly with solar. If you've got to carry a proper meter anyway (which you do) then why carry something extra and risk using it on a source that is outside its maximum operating parameters. At best that's inconvenient, at worst dangerous.
