Disney has had a factory-esque workflow of making children turn into mega famous popstars. But did you know they missed an opportunity with Britney Spears? Justin Timberlake? We all know the golden era: Miley, Selena, Demi.. but then we didn't get any stars for a long time. Now Olivia Rodrigo is the biggest new artist of 2021.. did Disney invest back in their Popstar line?

This was a great analysis for Disney and it really goes to show how domineering they were and arguably still are as a company. The Nickelodeon episode is even better. P. S. You should do an episode about Silento, the "watch me whip and nae nae" dude and exploring what happened to him.

The fact that Disney tried SO HARD after Miley, Demi and Selena but somehow never made it even though the next generation was talented af is still beyond me. Bridget Mendler, Zendaya, Ross Lynch, Olivia Holt, Dove Cameron, Sabrina Carpenter,…. they made good music even outside their shows but somehow never really broke out like the other girlies. The fact that Olivia did proves that it’s better for them to go outside of Disney from the get go when it comes to music and take creative control straight away, instead of being held down by the picture perfect Disney girl image and the Disney approved songs that go with that

In the case of Bridget and Zendaya they just decided to do other stuff. Zendaya didn't like the music industry and Bridget wanted to study (i think she even has a phd now). Had Disney kept Britney, Christina, and Justin, their careers wouldn't have went as far as they had. You think Britney, you think of toxic, baby one more time, oops i did it again, etc. Justin had sexyback, what goes around comes around, rock your body, etc. Christina had a more "tame" discography, but she still had dirrty, lady marmalade, burlesque, etc. Those are the songs that shaped them as artists and boosted their careers. Disney would have NEVER given them the chance to release those songs. Disney could have made them stars, but they could not have made them the global icons they were and are today. I think of Demi, Miley, Selena, Ariana, etc. and I don't associate them with disney or nickelodeon anymore. In their case, their shows are what started and catapulted their careers, but I associate them with their more mature bodies of work they released later on, and think of Disney/Nick as being just a little rough bump they had to go through to get where they are today.

@@YenellyT yea Demi was in an unfortunate situation, but I wouldn’t say they were overworked, majority of actors from kids shows say their time on set was fun and it didn’t even feel like work. Even skye Jackson in a recent video she made that everyone always had a great time and and she would often hang out with the cast of other shows cause they filmed in the same lot , and everyone would get together and play basketball or something when they weren’t shooting. Now maybe Selena , Miley and Demi probably had a Bigger load on their shoulders because they were pushed as the role models, were the leads of their own shows and they had to keep up with they’re music careers. Even tho they were young , without all that hard work they probably wouldn’t have been as successful as they became and till this day they still a lot more relevant compared to other Disney stars. And others that had bad experiences were put into the industry by their parents and didn’t even really have the passion to be in the entertainment business to begin with like jennet Mccurty. People underestimate Radio Disney. That was escape to listen to while doing homework or chores. I didn’t know anyone my age at the time that wasn’t listening to it, regardless of what they looked like. A lot of people think it was just rich suburban white kids listening when at the time, they honestly targeted every audience. So we all ended up talking and becoming friends with one another in a way that wasn’t common before. I think it’s one reason why so many of us loved Disney growing up. The only time Disney became less interesting was when it became mostly very white after 2010 to the point that it wasn’t as fun to look at anymore.

I'm convinced that in order for her to be successful to gen z kids, Disney actually asked her and is going to ask its new stars to pretend they aren't releasing music under Disney and have their own "creative control". This is the exact narrative that would make her seem edgy and not just some kid in the Disney machine. So you are expressing exactly what Disney wants you to express and makes it more likely for everyone to listen to her. I mean, isn't it odd that everyone knows about her little "rebellious" attitude about signing under a Disney contract? Seems like its being overly marketed as part of her image.

Another interesting fact to look at is just the larger awareness of how a lot of labels mistreat and exploit new talent. Taylor Swift, for example, is very vocal about artists' rights to their work. That self-advocacy didn't exist in the 2000s/early 2010s, so it was much easier for Disney to milk their stars. Olivia Rodrigo owns her masters and insisted on it because she saw how others were screwed over, and I'm sure the mouse would've never given her that
@anyssamoya1559
@anyssamoya1559 2 роки тому
That's a really good point. I think with the rise of social media, a more "progressive" media, and even youtube video essays like this one have all contributed to this sort of demystification of the entertainment industry. I mean, Britney Spears has been all over the news recently, not because of new music, but because of a legal case that is a clear example of how these huge popstars can be exploited and controlled. As you said, aritsts have more self-advocacy than before, and even fans are more aware and sympathetic to the artists they support. I did not know Olivia owned her masters, that's great! I know at one point The Weeknd had exactly that advice to new artists starting out: own your work.
@SR-zv5ue
@SR-zv5ue 2 роки тому
Taylor Swift is not the first artist to talk about and being exploited for music. There were many artists that were vocal and huge who talked about being explolited from their labels that were bigger names than her. Prince, TLC, Toni Braxton, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey. Taylor really didn't do anything special in terms of getting artists progressive record deals. It's just about having a good lawyer at the end of the day and how bankable you are as an artist.

Selena was definitely the last stronghold when it came to shows and music for Disney. Wizards finale was one of the most watched and then her Stars Dance album did pretty well. Obviously Demi was super successful with Disney but her show ended by 2010 and she kinda fell down after she left Hollywood records- I feel like Selena had the most smooth transition out of the three cause she was the most followed person on Instagram for a very long time (until like 2019 but she’s still top 5) and she didn’t have an overly sexualized era or a scandalous era like both miley and Demi had .

Selena’s music was not the stronghold. If anything it’s Miley by a landslide. Don’t you remember how big Hannah Montana was? I honestly preferred the Cheetah Girls over most of the Disney Channel musical shows/movies. Especially the first movie (I didn’t like the sequels much). It was a good role model for diverse girls of color and teenage girls following their dreams and working hard for it. That’s the kind of message that todays youth desperately needs.

How a great mind, like Disney's executives, can influence people so powerfully with their ideas and organization 😱

An interesting addition to this analysis is Disney In Latin America. There’s this Argentinian (Tini Stoessel) who started as an actress on a Disney show (Violetta) when she was idk 16 maybe. She sang on the show and on its soundtrack. She made a movie about the same show with them (again with a soundtrack). She then went on to release two or three album WITH HOLLYWOOD RECORDS as her label and she is the most listened to Argentine singer in Spotify (or something like that). She has done tours over Europe and South America. Edit: her albums slowly progressed to more mature aesthetics but they’re all under Hollywood records.

Oh yeah, I'm from Poland and I still remember how big the show was around here (same with "Soy Luna" actually). I was really surprised when he mentioned the years of their peak popularity as a gap, but then I found that these shows have never been aired on Disney Channel in the US (apparently they thought the telenovela format wouldn't apply to the American audience). Disney was still thriving, just not in the States lol

From the US, I love Soy Luna and Bia, and saw them on Disney+. The Violetta soundtrack went platinum in a bunch of countries. Tini was 14 when Violetta first aired. In 202, Tini was named Billboard Argentina's Artist Of The Year. I love her music too. I feel like she would get so much more recognition if she went with a record label with less ties to Disney. She's really talented.

@@user-ih4so4gx3r They rarely air foreign programming on English-language TV networks in the US. Even shows from the US, AUS, NZ are rare; Canadian shows have a slightly better shot because the accent is similar. @Call Me, BLEGH Me, If You Wanna Reach Me The Jonas Brothers did a remake/cover of “Kids in America” to promote Disney’s Meet the Robinsons movie. They covered “I Wanna Be Like You” for a re-release of the Jungle Book. They covered “Poor Unfortunate Souls” for a re-release of The Little Mermaid. Their song “Hold On” promoted Disney’s Johnny Kapahala: Back on Board. The band sang a new version of Disney’s TV show American Dragon: Jake Long. They stared in the Camp Rock franchise and had their own TV show. Disney premiered their own 3D concert movie like what they did with Hannah Montana.

Yeah cause the formation of their band had nothing to do with Disney at all. They were also musicians first, that's why even after getting a show on the channel, what they did onscreen and what they did for themselves could be seen as separate entities

Interesting stuff, and I didn't watch or listen to any of it, but it's impressive. A couple of things: First, having a channel or record label was a fantastic infrastructure until everything diversified with online music and shows. Attention is a currency, and Disney figured out how to use the popularity of a show to bankroll a record with audience attention, then maybe another record and a movie. That's a perfect example of synergistic marketing. Second, attention is also finite and fatigue happens. They started to slump even before the platform shattered, so they might have figured out where their limits are. Assuming they figure out how to use online platforms, it could happen again, but they need to know when to stop, or at least when to move on to a new, younger star. Great video.

Latin American Disney sort of used this same formula too: from 2012 to 2015 aired the Argentinian TV show “Violetta”, which was about a musically gifted teenager who moves back to Buenos Aires with her father after having lived in Europe. They casted the 14 year old Martina Stoessel to play the protagonist; the show had multiple records and tours. Today she’s one of the most successful Latin American musicians. Her artistic name is “TINI” and her music is dope, by the way.

I think with Olivia they are actually reversing the formula: allow their show to get a star a record label, even if outside Disney, but then use the wider fame brought about by the subsequent records to bring attention to their show through that star. It doesn't matter what label signs Olivia because ultimately, people don't pay attention to the record label behind an album. They see Olivia, they see she's in a show, they watch the show. Disney gets subscribers regardless and doesn't even have to produce an album themselves.
