In this informal video, I rant a little bit about Sam Langford's rapid 1902-03 rise to prominence in the pugilistic realm, and briefly preview the upcoming TheFightCity.com series on Langford's career.
Shoutout to HARDLINE BOXING (the Boxing Librarian) and Scrapbook Boxing Museum of the Forgotten Fisticuffs, both excellent channels full of historical boxing content.

Love how you are going year by year and breaking Sam Langford down. The newspapers are so fascinating to look at since they include photos that we have never seen on the internet. Can’t imagine the hard work it must’ve been to create this video.

Great video Buddy, keep up the good work. Langford was truly one of the very greatest and had over 500 fights. So incredible 🥊 Also the lost to Jack Johnson he fought him with a broken hand and still went the distance. That’s incredible 🥊

👊 He seems to have come out of the Johnson loss even more popular than when he went in for having lasted the distance. The betting seems to have largely centered on how many rounds he might last.

Tough times bred tough men, and the early 1900's some of the toughest men to ever lace up the gloves fought. Your documentary is very well done, especially mentioning some of those greats that Sam met and beat. One of those greats that Sam met was Jack Johnson. Sam was not quite experienced enough to handle Jack at that time. Still a very close fight as Jack was just a couple of years away from being the Heavyweight Champ of the world. Using the pound-for-pound analogy Sam was the greatest ever (my opinion). The first time I got a peek at Sam's pro fight record it was a jaw dropping event for me. He not only fought very frequently, but fought the best of that time. His career spanned from the early 1900's unto the early 1920's. His list of opponents reads like a "whose-who" in great boxers. I remember reading about a time that the great Jack Dempsey ducked Sam. Dempsey's manager, Doc Kearns, told Sam that they were looking for someone easier than Sam. Sam was way past his prime when he made this challenge. But his legendary status as one of the best ever followed him , even past his prime, even being legally blind, that's how great this man was! The Jack Johnson fight mentioned earlier, was never repeated! After Jack won the title he carefully drew the "color line" against Sam. Even though Sam, Joe Jeanette, and Sam McVey all were more worthy challengers than the ones Jack defended against. Damn, what a heavyweight line-up that was around then! The lighter weight Sam met was the likes of Joe Walcott, Jack Blackburn, Stanley Ketchell, to name a precious few greats that Sam met. Thank you for your documentary, well done, and very interesting to the student of boxing history!

Thank you very much. I'll be covering 1904-05 in the next installment, as he began his dramatic climb up the weights. We'll look at his many encounters with Dave Holly, Jack Blackburn and Young Peter Jackson, as well as his interactions with Barbados Walcott, Larry Temple, Elbows McFadden, Willie Lewis, and the rest leading up to his Dec 05 loss to the great Joe Jeannette. I have several ongoing projects but I should have part two out within a couple of weeks.

This is a classic case of over rating a fighter who was under rated. The take that Johnson feared him is an overreach. Johnson was nobody's fool he beat pretty much all the great black fighters and lost to some before he won the title. Johnson knew the big money was fighting white hopes and promoters knew this. Its just business twisted as it is. Johnson and Langford both had great respect for each other.

@@Bruins-vq5ey We can't climb into Johnson's head but from the films I Jack would still have beaten them. @@Bruins-vq5ey It makes good business sense if he did but Johnson was probably one or two Best of all time heavyweight. You can make a case for ducking them but them beating him is as easy a case to make. Action wise it would be a better fight than Tommy Burns or some of the other white contenders but its a shame they never made a johnson Dempsey match even if it was a past his best for Jack. I believ that Dempsey from all that I have read would load his gloves as some fighters did in the 1920's. No one can convince me they were not loaded in the Willard fight.
