TbH tough, this is "just" a Raspberry Pi with it's limited capabilities, not a "full" PC. A commodore or something like that was state of the art hot shit. However the price reflects that differents as well of course. Crazy how far we've come so far with computers, that thing is defenetly well suited for usual Office Bullshit and everything you'd do on the Internet and can handle a lot of Emulation tasks just fine. Including emulating the good old Amiga or Commodore as well.

I remember young me saying 'I need to get a computer with more memory, then I can finish my game' Well this PI is the closest looking alternative to what I imagined I needed to upgrade to, when I was young me.. I really think I might get this, to complete my game.. Maze Craze..

Same, there was a TV area in the library that was mostly unused (in place to watch DVDs), so I brought in a Pi and keyboard/mouse and turned those TVs into my own computer. That was so -long- much effort (and I ended up losing a keyboard!) and if the 400* was available then, I would have loved it (and probably not have bothered even getting a laptop, as there wouldn’t have been a need for one!) (* of course taking into account the 4th gen power! I already have a Pi 4 but I’m -tempted to buy- already bought a 400 now, which I'm loving...)

Worth bearing in mind that the unit by itself is quite a bit cheaper, and the bits that come in the kit may not be needed. The good thing about the 400 is that it's effectively the Pi 4, keyboard, case and cooling all in one, and hopefully the only things to source would be a micro HDMI adapter/cable and a microSD card (and should be easy to get!)

But the Pi4 has nearly the same harder without RF shield except maybe the PCB ground plane... RF shields usually completely encapsulate rather than just a sheet connected to ground in few locations. I think there is a chip between the pi and the ribbon cable that has the controller for the keyboard itself, but you’re right that that chip uses one of the USB lines.

The announcement of this was a pleasant surprise. I know some found it puzzling, but I like this variant of the Pi. I was considering picking up their desktop kit in the past because I like the look of their keyboard and could use another one, but it never made sense for me to actually buy one. It seemed like a bad value since the included case was useless due to the thermal needs of the Pi 4. This is a different story and much more appealing to me. It's nice to finally see a Pi 4 board with proper cooling included. That's one of the things I've always liked about Hardkernel's Odroid boards. They've almost always had good thermal solutions. I may just get one of these.

Kinda glad I waited on my purchase of a Raspberry Pi 4. I would've been happy with it, but this throwback to the Amiga A1200 and the C64 with the decent//good cooling plus the built-in power "button" really adds an extra layer of coolness for me. I think they knocked it out of the park. This is effectively a 1-purchase solution which makes it much more accessible to everyone... not that the RP4 isn't accessible, but this one is more so.

Quite a lot of wasted space on the Custom/Revision'ed Board, which could easily fit in full-size HDMI and even PCI-e slot and eMMC slot. With the amount of space they have on this Board, they could even make a 16GB RAM variant as well without much issue (though i guess it would up the cost and power draw).
@kristiansims

Wouldn’t the PCIE slot take the connection that is used by the Ethernet? Not sure about eMMC, that might use the same bus as SD. Full size hdmi would have been glorious, though.

Amazing video, kudos for the teardown. We can see they put a lot of efforts on it. Wondering if it'll work fine with a bluetooth mouse (so, less cables in the table!). One concern I have is related to the RAM. A few browser tabs opened will kill the RAM quickly.

I use a bluetooth mouse, keyboard and headphones on my Raspberry Pi 4, since the underlying hardware and software isn't really any different I have no doubt it will work fine on the 400. My mouse was a pain to pair up though, but that was due to the mouse being very difficult to get into pairing mode, together with an extremely short pairing mode, not the fault of the Raspberry Pi.
