Can you answer me a question Hilbert? Both Barlow and Licence ignore the hagiography by St Ælred of Rievaulx. Okay, it's a puff piece but reading between the lines can reveal something about the man himself. For instance, Edward was gay ( to cover it up the Witan encouraged Edward to marry) and in his later years Edward passed down the role of governing in favour of studying the Bible. Emma kept Godwin alive and exonerated Godwin over the matter with Alfred. Godwin however, bullied the king seemingly at every opportunity ( makes sense if Edward seemed a bit "otherworldly"). Godwin wasn't Edwards only victim. I think that Harthacnut death in '41 could be put at Edward's doorstep ( Edward made co-regent and then the King suddenly dies - Edward becomes king without Witan approval). I'm hoping DNA evidence from France will prove that the guy we knew as Edward was in fact an imposter.
