I’m a football (soccer) fan as must of the Brazilians, however I love Rugby and Aussie Rules as well. Unfortunately I never had chance to go to Australia but I’ve been watching the AFL since 2017 and now I’m teaching my kids how to play during my lessons (I’m a PE Teacher). Greetings from Brazil Aussie mates!

You should totally come down here mate I promise you to going to an AFL game with your kids will be an absolute highlight, the stadium is always filled with mad Aussie's that are really passionate about the game, hearing the crowds' loud cheers chants and booing is one of my favorite things about going to the game!

One comment, you don't get a 'free kick' every time a player is tackled. They usually result in 'ball-ups' where the umpire throws the ball up in the air, like at the start of the game, for the teams to contest.
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 8 років тому
+FeathertopDT I was referring to when the tackled player does not dispose of the ball (having had opportunity to do so). I think you call this 'holding the ball'. Then it's paid with a free kick.
@feathertopDT
@feathertopDT 8 років тому
Ninh Ly Yes that's correct, it doesn't happen as often as the ball-ups though so i thought i'd clear it up. :)
@neelparmar6690
@neelparmar6690 8 років тому
I agree, this wasn't clearly explained in the video. Otherwise, it's spot on.
@thegreentimtam
@thegreentimtam 6 років тому
For a four minute video on the rules, this is a fine way of explaining it in my opinion. The holding the ball rule is by far the most complicated rule in AFL, but at its most basic it is "if you tackle someone while they are in possession of the ball, you are rewarded a free kick". Exceptions are made if there was no opportunity for them to handpass or kick the ball prior to the tackle, resulting in "play on". But this is an exception. It just so happens that most tackles happen before the opportunity to dispose of the ball. If the games enters a stalemate, with the ball unable to move, the umpire will call for a ball up. This almost always happens after a player is tackled, with the ball trapped and the player unable to pass or kick it. But I think this is out of the scope of the video, along with other more complicated rules such as out of bounds (on the full/deliberate), deliberate rush behinds, and other tackling rules, like diving onto the football and ducking into a tackle.

Just wanted to clarify a few things in this video for those interested: -There are 4x20min quarters but there are stoppages too (ie whenever the umpire stops the game or when the ball goes out of the sideline) which results in roughly 4x30min quarters in real time. -Tackling doesn't get you awarded a free kick in every circumstance, you are not penalised if you didn't have enough time upon receiving the ball to dispose of it or if you managed to get a legal disposal (HB or kick) whilst being tackled. -The amount of free time allocated to a player after a mark is to the discretion of the umpire, usually less than 10 seconds in the midfield or defense as they want to keep the game moving. There is a 30 second period for players who mark inside the 50, but that is also awarded to those just outside the 50 if they indicate to the umpire they want to attempt to kick a goal and they believe they are within kicking distance of the goal line. -A new rule has just come out this year the the 120 interchange cap has been reduced to 90, to make the game harder and testing the endurance of player more, instead of relying on the interchange so much.

Thanks for the quick and easy explanation. I've been watching for years and before the internet had no idea what the rules were. Being from the States (Oregon) people had no idea how the game was played or what the rules were. I finally got off my lazy butt and decided to GOOGLE and get some information about rules, stategy, etc. For anyone who hasn't watched a game let me tell you it's exciting and intriguing as hell. Your explanation and video has cleared up a bunch of questions I had, "thanks". I don't know why Americans love their brand of football so much? It's a slow game, 30 seconds between plays, penalties on just about every other play that slow the game down, not very much scoring and the rule book is as thick as the U.S. Tax Code book. Aussie rules football and all professional soccer are much faster, easier to understand and overall much better games too watch and far more exciting. I like Rugby too but that is one game that seems complicated and I need to get some info so I can understand the rules. Great game and tough as hell players. Both Rugby and Aussie Football players are far tougher players than U.S. footballers (no pads or helmets and they knock the crap out of each other). In U.S. football there seems to be a game ending injury on every third or fourth play and these guys are wearing pads from head to toe plus helmets. There are a lot of constant injuries in soccer as well but players are rarely taken off the field and miss the game due to injury (and they don't wear pads, except shin guards). Anyway, well done and once again, thanks for the good info. (I'm watching the "West Coast Eagles vs. Hawthorn" as I'm writing this. The Eagles are thrashing Hawthorn 48-17 in the 3rd period).

matt johnson I'm fully aware of the doping saga etc. I started watching them before all that stuff happened. I know that in AFL circles: Essendon and their fans are 'scum', but I don't particularly care about that. Having said that, Essendon really stunk up the joint this season. Really painful to watch.

Thanks. I work security at the AFL and didn't know the rules. I thought the home team lost tonight as it was 7:19.61 versus 8:10.58. When the buzzer went I was like 'why are they cheering the other team still scored more goals'. I thought the other points only came into play if it was tied goals. Nope, multiple by six and add. Thanks. It's a chaotic game but when the team is in the zone and passes and catches and goals are flowing it's quite good to watch. I prefer it to League.

Well done with the video. A good intro guide is naturally going to skip a bit of nuance in the rules (I'm an Aussie Rules umpire and my rule book is 80 pages - not going to fit into 5 minutes), but my usual method of bringing in initiates just ends up overloading with too much detail. In future, I'll just have your video bookmarked :)

I am Canadian that used to love soccer (football) the most, but one day when the sport channel at my work play a game of ARL during lunch time, I fell in love with the sport. The fast pace, big field, no diving, high intensity game caught my attention, it was so fun to watch, and not overly difficult to understand the general game rule after 5 minutes of watching it. Now this is my favorite team sport to watch, unfortunately due to the lack of popularity of the sport here in Canada, not many people are watching it, let alone play it here in Canada, but I do try to make time for it.

Great job, Ninh! Though concise, your sports videos are always very informative, friendly, and not without a touch of humour. Thank you man! - All the more reason for me to be grateful is that about a year ago this very video had opened for me the fascinating world of the Aussie Rules Football which I regard now as indeed the most interesting and exciting (simply the best!) football game of all other codes. Since then I've grown into a real footy fan and a kind of 'expert' in the AFL matter (probably the only one in Russia :)): I follow Geelong, but also I sympathize with Bombers (despite their known issues), I respect Western Bulldogs, Carlton and Collingwood... And I admire Clarkson!

+Ninh Ly - Thank you, Ninh I've got a trifling question about the AFL rules. Somehow I failed to find an answer to it anywhere. During a match some players (of both teams) wear a thin black belt up their left arm. What does it mean?
@joshuaryan7038
@joshuaryan7038 8 років тому
+Alexander Shumilov It doesn't signify any rule, it's a mark of respect, normally to a player's relative or a team supporter who has died.
@alexandershumilov2766
@alexandershumilov2766 8 років тому
+Joshua “Baby J” Ryan - Fair enough... In fact, that was my first idea, but I discarded it. The arm belts (or ribbons?) look too uniform for a spontaneous personal expression of sympathy. Also, come to think of it: SEVERAL players at EVERY match - that looks like a bit too high mortality rate for the AFL (besides, I do not remember seeing ALL players wear black arm belts during the matches when the whole of Australia was mourning for Phil Walsh). Moreover, once I spotted a player with TWO belts on his left arm (sorry, I didn't pay much attention to it at the moment. so I do not remember who exactly it was - someone of Hawks, or maybe Eagles). So, my second guess was the belts must have something to do with counting interchanges (or maybe fouls) of a particular player in the game.
@joshuaryan7038
@joshuaryan7038 8 років тому
+Alexander Shumilov Yeah, it does seem a lot. But I watch matches on TV every week and go to a game every other week, and I've never heard of any other reason. There might be one, but I've never heard of it. I wore a black band in a game myself once, and that was for a player's mother dying.

Australian football is actually the oldest code if "football" anywhere in the world. Also the Melbourne football club is the oldest football club if any code in the world
@NinhLyUK
@NinhLyUK 9 років тому
Justin M Thanks for the info. It is a largely contested bone of contention that Aussie Rules was the first form of football and that Melbourne FC was the oldest club. It depends on how you look at it. Some people would argue Sheffield FC (est 1857) is the oldest team. And some would argue that forms of football (before it became codified as association football) are older than Australian Football. Medieval, Ancient Chinese Football, Mob Football, Public School Football etc. all preceded Australian Football (and is what Australian Rules Football is based on). Personally, I'm not sure who definitively invented football. I look for more the evolution of the sport - that's a much more interesting story. Thanks for the comments, be sure to share and subscribe :)
@josephboland627
@josephboland627 9 років тому
Justin M It all goes back to when a sport really begins.Does it start with one or two clubs and a set of rules or does it start when the governing body is formed.Tom willis is said to have invented ozzie rules,but the vfl didn't form until about 40 years later.In ireland we say that gaelic football is the ancestor of ozzie rules australians dispute this because standardised gaelic football started in 1884 with the formation of the GAA and ozzie rules started in the !840s,but did it the VFL started much later.Gaelic football was standardised from caid that was played for centuries and the game which tom willis invented was more like rugby than todays game so the issue of when a game started is very hard to pin down.

AustOpinion55 Funny you should say that, if I didn't start recently asking everyone else that question, I would be an Essendon fan. Games rarely get shown here in the UK and the only teams that seem to get shown are Essendon, Collingwood and Hawthorn. Essendon are the most entertaining out of the three. But I've asked this question to several people who told me to stay the hell away from Essendon, lest I sell my soul to the devil (or something along those lines). I'm all for backing Essendon, but can you tell me why people hate them so much? The recent contorversy doesn't help of course.

+BadtemperedandGrumpy 5 states out of 6 in Australia have teams and it is the primary game played all over except NSW and QLD (more Rugby League oriented). AFL regular season games are played in all 6 states and 2 territories. There is watchafl.com subscription for overseas views and it might be something like under 50 pounds for a whole year. That includes every game live, and replays of every game that season etc. Some teams to watch; -Western Bulldogs: Extremely fast, exciting, agile and attacking side. -Hawthorn Hawks: Champions last three years in a row and extremely well coached. -Richmond Tigers: Always a lot of drama in their games, either rock up unstoppable or shakey -Sydney Swans: A team lined with a bunch of champion players and contenders.

Thank you for making this video. My wife and I started watching ARF a couple of weeks ago and have trouble understanding the rules some times. I noticed that when a ball goes out of bounds some times a player throws it back in and some times a ref does, could you tell me what determines who throws it back in?
@BrandonjSlippingAway
@BrandonjSlippingAway 7 років тому
Yes this is easily explained; if the ball goes 'out of bounds on the full' or in other words goes out of bounds from a kick without bouncing first- the other team gets the ball. If the ball bounces out of play, is punched out of bounds, run out of play or anything like that; the umpire throws it back in. The only exception to this is if the umpire deems there was no effort to keep it in play, and rules it 'intentional out of bounds'.

texjlh it is always an umpire/referee that throws it in but you might know that now since the comment is from 3 years ago

I hope some U.S. T.V. Channel immediately starts to broadcast the current season. The explanation of the rules was very informative and certainly makes me want to watch actual games.

Yeah, it's a cool sport to get into. I'm pretty sure they stream games actually? Sometimes on UKposts.

@@VidrioRevolver the season will get postponed until around like late May. There's plenty of Aussie rules classic games on UKposts you can watch including from the VFL and SANFL prime days. I'm doing that until the season resumes.
