Wall Street investors loved the streaming business, especially Netflix and this is where companies across the media world invested billions of dollars to launch streaming services to take on Netflix. In 2019, Disney and Apple launched their streaming service Disney+ and Apple TV, in early 2020 Warner Bros launched HBO Max. these events kicked of the so-called streaming war. and now that war is coming to an end. to find out more watch the video to the end. Hope you enjoy the video.

For those wondering about services clamping down on password sharing, that's a double-edged sword. Yes they want to, but they also know that the first service that gets strict about sharing accounts will suffer existing subscriber loss and especially significant new subscriber drop-off. You have to remember that even if a large number of accounts is sharing theirs with two or three family or friends at a different address, that does not mean that if they stop password sharing their subscriber base will suddenly double or triple overnight. It's similar to software copying in the 80s and 90s. That industry claimed it cost them billions in lost revenue, but that wasn't true. Because they ignored the crucial fact that the vast majority of people who did 'casual copying' _would not have bought the software if they couldn't get it for free!_ The same is true for streaming today. For the majority of people who 'casually' get it free by password sharing, they still wouldn't buy a subscription if they were cut off. Some would but most would not. And because of this password sharing isn't really costing the companies money. Yes it's a drain on their bandwidth, but they have to be able to offer customers multiple profiles with each account..

Thanks to software piracy I got to have access to many games in my childhood I wouldn't have otherwise. Games and franchises whom I became a fan of, and now as an adult with my own money I can purchase their products. Some of the games I pirated back then I bought on sales on Steam, such as Titan Quest and Age of Empires II. I wouldn't have bought Far Cry 3 if I hadn't discovered Far Cry 2 thanks to piracy.
@HailAnts
@HailAnts Рік тому
@@bluestar5812 - Games were the one type of software that tried the most to prevent copying. Again, with mixed results. A lot of companies tried using full-on copy protection with their floppy disks, but users hated that. More often they used 'code books' included with packaging, sometimes combined with the user manual. These were usually printed with black text on red paper, because Xerox machines would have trouble copying those. Sometimes these code books would use 'volatile' ink that would fade away after a few months. When CD-ROMs came out these gave copy protection a rest for a few years, until CD burners became cheap. Happened again with DVDs. The most reliable software copy protection came with the ubiquitousness of the internet and product 'activation'. Windows XP made that the standard to this day..

Crackdown on password sharing is an idiot move. The first time I watched Netflix back in 2014/2015 was by using the account of my brother's friend's aunt (who we have never met). We liked it, so when my father bought a smart TV some time after that, we made him sign for Netflix. Password sharing is still the way we watch streaming on my family. I sign for hbomax, my dad for Netflix, my brother for amazon and my sister for Disney. Would I ever subscribe for all those services by myself? No way! It gets too expensive. We would probably reconsider all our subscriptions cause it wouldn't be as worth it.

I see netflix losing a bunch of subscribers and money in the near future. Netflix knows that they're in a corner and they really have no way out. Anything that they do will punish them in either the short or long term. They have pretty much reached their peak and the only way to keep going up is to force people to pay more to add additional users or force people to create their own account. Netflix soon will have very little content on their platform, especially with the content licensing prices skyrocketing lately due to the other media giants trying to keep all their content on their own platforms. It will probably be cheaper for Netflix to make their own shows and movies than it will be to license in the near future. Netflix already doesn't have much good content besides for the few hit shows they've produced. I don't bet on Netflix staying in business for too much longer.

As someone who used to find many TV shows ...elsewhere... because availability was so terrible here and largely locked behind a monopolistic cable service that was exorbitantly expensive, when Netflix and then Disney came along, I didn't need the Plex server any more. Then more studios started their own services, which was ok as prices were low, I added a couple more services. But then the number of first party services kept growing, and content got pulled back from license agreements, and even further content began being segmented among 'local' streaming services. And then prices went up. Now to get a similar level of content I'd need to subscribe to at least 6 services, and pay nearly 10x what I was paying for Netflix + Disney - and equivalent of what that monopolistic cable service wanted to charge for their premium package. The solution? You guessed it, pay for 2, drop the rest picked up along the way, and beef up the Plex server once more.

I used to work for a company that provided software for cell phone companies. The situation in that industry was a preview of the situation in the streaming industry. For a while the cell phone companies didn't need to worry about spending because they were getting millions of new subscribers every month. Eventually everybody had a cell phone, and suddenly there were no new subscribers to be had. What did the cell phone companies do? First they cut their internal costs. Then they started merging (Sprint merged with T-Mobile, for example). I wonder if we will see the same outcome in the streaming industry? My guess is ... yes.

Currently, we subscribe to Netflix and Disney+. We find that these two services provide the most "bang for the buck" as compared to other streaming services. A price increase doesn't really bother me since it's still dramatically cheaper than a cable TV subscription and we're more likely to find content we're interested in rather than being at the mercy of network scheduling. We also save ourselves the headache of surfing through a dizzying array of specialty networks that offer little to nothing of value. I know everybody wants to get into the streaming game, but there simply isn't enough consumer demand to support DOZENS of content-limited streaming services. Sooner or later, content producers will figure out that the REAL money is in licensing existing content rather than flushing money down the toilet trying to build and sustain your own streaming service. The future of the streaming industry depends heavily on consolidation, allowing one or two players to dominate the market while other businesses focus on producing content rather than competing in a market they don't know how to compete in.

Staggering release will do nothing to fix the hit and run problem but ensure that what would have been a 1mo sub becomes a delayed 1mo sub, or, at most, a 2mo sub. More diverse is another word for niche audience. You can definitely survive on servicing a small subset but there's no such thing as shrinking yourself back to profitablity.

I have seen the decline in quality of all the offerings on all the streaming services and am very close to cancelling all my subscriptions. Mediocracy reigns.

Pluto tv, Tubi, the Library is awesome if you’re wanting to save money. And get ExpressVPN. So getting an internet carrier is frustrating.

These price increases are just pushing me back to getting media by other means..... The best solution would be the big streamers come together to create a package bundle but I dont see it happening. I'd even be ok with them only though a one year contract.
@tomfooIeryz
@tomfooIeryz Рік тому
I don’t think that would work, because if all those big streaming services were combined as a bundle, it would probably just be the same price as cable, if not higher.

Well, they are all trying to be as big as UKposts. The point being missed is UKposts is more than that. I won't cancel UKposts premium because of the fact that I like to watch music videos of bands I like. I don't want an ad in the middle of it. So I pay for it. But right there is where UKposts stands out. You can find things to watch from music videos to reviews to news, sports, etc. Oh, UKposts will have its ups and downs. But nothing like the others will have.

What do you mean and then Amazon prime? Amazon prime has been around way longer than Disney Plus. In fact I remember hearing about Amazon prime over a decade ago

"Straight to Blu-Ray" and "DRM-FREE Digital purchase downloads" I recon will make some sort of comeback. It's a more stable monetary model and can still be profitable. Subscriptions streaming services ADD UP where you keep paying but will never own any content.

Wonder if this is the natural progression of companies over burrowing and now that interest rates are up ...cuts are needed to pay down debts.

Too many streaming services is diluting the customer base. When it was only Netflix and Amazon people generally had both. Almost everything was available on those 2 and pirating was almost dead. Now it's fragmented and piracy is back as people only want one or two shows on each service and aren't prepared to pay for half a dozen services. I imagine in a few years only Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ will survive.

I agree. I was mad when NBC took the Office off of Netflix to put on their own streaming service. There is absolutely NOTHING else on NBC I am interested in, so signing up for it just to watch The Office would have been a waste of money for me.

I refuse to pay for streaming because I'm a really slow watcher. But gosh it's a pain waiting for them to finally release the stuff I want on physical media so I can spend another year not getting around to it before I finally pop the disc in my machine... XD
