Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota is best known for her fantastical installations made out of intricately woven yarn but her body of work is much more diverse - ranging from visceral performance art to grand sculptures created with used objects.

This is an excellent documentary. Thank you for making it. I came up with a title for my own next work while watching and it has helped me find better words for my work as well.

Beautiful work, I think she would be able to make the most amazing scary movie.

I went to her installation yesterday. It was really interesting how she's threading soul-life-death altogether along with herself as an art itself. Her work made me feel something, a connection-emotion. It was really amazing. I'm instantly become a fan of her

If I had to use one word to describe her work it would be "Entangled". Chiharu is really quite a deep and intriguing person, and I appreciate the niche she has found that she gives to the world in the form of these sculptures and performances.

I happened to see her works in Roppongi Hills just as frankly as go shopping to a newly-opened store in the building. I got so shocked, and then started to google her to find the further information. Anyays she would sure be the artist that I can not forget in my whole life. Thanks for uploading sir.

do these pieces get sold and to whom and in what setting? Or...what happens to the piece when the exhibition is over? I guess she earns a percentage from admission tickets..is that correct?

No normally she would be paid to make the work. She is paid to make and show it and given an artists's fee. She might sell other smaller works. most large scale artists usually do. They also get paid doing residencies there are other ways. I think every time she wants to show the work again, she would have to remake it but at least she has the raw materials which if a gallery has bought the work they would store the raw materials as well. Something like this I believe.

Very interesting and creative artist!! I wonder if her personal history connects with memories of child ritual abuse, cult activities and dark part in het life. Very strong art and speaking very much like a surviour.... Or still a Victim... 😢

It is interesting work, too bad it requires so much resources, in terms of space. I found conceptual experiments of the 60ies and 70ies more enriching. Some installations are captivating.

I'm not really interested in these huge installations that waste material. That is a LOT of string!!

These commentators are so predictable. They are nearly dead anyway. Makes sense, considering her morbid mentor. BTW art is not about ideas. Unless you are talking about entertainment. She seems like a nice woman though, herself.

I would argue that art is all about ideas. A nice painting is more like decoration than art, if there's no (even small) ideas behind it.

You should make an empty glass installation to represent the emptiness of your head.

Kay Em, you clearly have not the slightest clue bout art. Maybe stick to your lame ass drawings and leave the real artists alone :)
