When upgrading rod bolts in my E46 M3 to ARP, a stretch gauge is needed. I show you how to use it and why it's used.

I did run into a slight problem with the ARP bolts, (totally my fault) I had to adjust the video in order to still provide you the information on the stretch gauge. I did send an oil sample to Blackstone laboratories and the results showed mostly normal levels, the iron showed slightly above average. No signs of excessive bearing wear. I hope you enjoy the video, Thank you for watching!
Tools and parts used in this video:
- ARP Stretch Gauge: bit.ly/3KcZOri
- BE Bearings: bit.ly/3ESsCUN
- ARP Rod bolts (M11 bolt size S54 up to 2/03 production): bit.ly/38qLazF
- ARP Rod bolts (M10 bolt size S54 as of 2/03 production): bit.ly/3OxItNf
- Oil Pan Gasket: bit.ly/3Khep4T
- Engine Mounts: bit.ly/3xSBloL
- Oil Filter: bit.ly/3kdSbGr
- Engine Oil (you'll need 6 liters): bit.ly/3vDUVCc

Love when you make videos on the e46 as I’m very close to buying one myself so it’s cool to see such informative content that’s easy to understand for a dumbass like me lmao. Granted I won’t be getting an M3 for monetary sake but a lot of the tips & tricks or info will translate to a 330ci of around the same year. Anyways, quality content as always, glad to see ur channel growing so quickly

I just did this today actually on my engine build, and was surprised at my findings! Dealing with a Honda F20B engine, KS Tuned forged rods, ARP bolts and ARP ultra lube on the threads and under the head. The spec is 45ft.lb. but also calls for .0055-.0060" stretch. I ended up having to put around 60-68ft.lb to achieve the full stretch on each bolt to .0055" so either my torque wrench (a good condition Matco) is reading low, or the given spec is just kind of ballpark. Either way, the rod bolt stretch gauge is a great tool to have and use on an engine build along with a set of high precision micrometers and inside micrometer set, vice, etc. I got the Jegs aluminum gauge and it is pretty decent and ergonomically works well.
@PreludeDude
@PreludeDude 2 роки тому
Also for what it's worth i think it's a little weak sauce that you don't actually throw a rod into a vice at least and demonstrate how in practical usage of this particular tool, you end up raising the torque value on your torque wrench in order to achieve the full required stretch. Also how you have to write it all down and keep track of each individual bolt because they're all slightly different lengths to begin.

I had a similar issue this year. Teared down the engine to check what bolts do I have and I have M10. And APR didn't have them in stock for the next 3 months, so I had to order stock bolts instead.

Do you have a dial bore gauge? I'd love to see you measure the bearing clearance difference on the rod big end when you stretch the bolts vs a torque number. 👍Thanks and great channel.

Wait a minute, you change the rod bearings without measuring the clearance? Or it isn't required? But how could that be? Or you did it but didn't include on the video?
@JamiesGarage1
@JamiesGarage1 2 роки тому
Good question. If you’re replacing with factory bearings then yes, measure with plasi gauge. Depending on your measurements will determine which bearing to use. The BE bearings only have 1 size, so measuring will only give me assurance but I can change anything about it. Hope that helps
