In the US alone, 70% of Americans have either deficient or suboptimal levels of vitamin D. This is a massive problem given vitamin D's impact on our health and its effects on our gene regulation and expression. Vitamin D also regulates calcium and supports the functioning of the immune system, making it one of the most important biological compounds in the body.
In today’s episode of a new series I’m calling Know Your Numbers, I dive deep into vitamin D. I discuss why vitamin D deficiency is a problem, how conventional medicine misses the mark in measuring vitamin D levels, how Functional Medicine treats vitamin D deficiency, and much more.
You can test your vitamin D levels with @functionhealth, a company I co-founded. It has been a lifelong dream for me. Function is the first-ever membership that includes 100+ lab tests and personalized insights from globally renowned doctors based on your results. Join Function at FunctionHealth.com.

We need more capability to test ourselves at home. I hate going to the doctor. I sit in the waiting room for over an hour, then sit in a little cold room for another 25 minutes. The doctor comes in and sees me for under 10 minutes, says, “Hello, how are you?” and ignores my answer, tells me I seem to be doing fine for my age, 80, and writes me an order for a blood and urine test. (Why don’t they have me do those before the appointment, so we might have something to talk about?) My knees hurt. He gives me a prescription for 600mg Ibprophen 3 times a day. No checking about why they hurt. Then says I’ll get my test results in the mail, and I should call if I have any questions. How would I know what to ask. We are done in 9 minutes, and he has hurried out of the room. My test results come to me and what’s tested for is minimal. Vitamin D? No. Total cholesterol only. A recommendation for statins based on the one number. UKposts docs need to know what the real world is like. They say go to another doctor. This is my third one. All alike.

Im taking 5000IU with magnesium every day and i go out much more and feel much better...will need at least 60D3 to feel normal and prevent all that crappy stuff...also my liver was not the issue since my tests and ultrasound are ok so my liver is converting the inactive D to active normally...im just deficient...goddamn lockdowns goddamn home office...

Key points: 00:03 🌞 Vitamin D deficiency affects over a billion people worldwide, with 70% of Americans having insufficient or deficient levels, increasing risks of various health issues. 01:39 🦠 Vitamin D regulates calcium, supports immune function, and significantly impacts the risk of infections like COVID-19, playing a vital role in preventing serious complications. 03:19 💉 Testing for vitamin D is crucial, yet often missed by conventional medicine. Optimal levels differ from normal ranges, with 45-75 nanograms per deciliter considered ideal, not the common 30 or lower. 06:35 💰 The cost of untreated diseases due to vitamin D deficiency can be significant, outweighing expenses related to testing and supplementation. 11:50 🏙 Lack of sunlight, sunscreen use, urban living, certain medications, obesity, aging, gut issues, and poor diet significantly impact vitamin D levels, contributing to deficiencies in modern lifestyles. 20:42 🦠 Low vitamin D can lead to inflammation and weaken the immune system, causing frequent sickness. 21:24 💪 Adequate vitamin D levels reduce flu risk by 75% and can alleviate bone/joint pain, mood issues, and fatigue. 22:31 🩺 Low vitamin D is associated with cancer risk due to its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. 28:43 🦠 Severe COVID risks are higher in those with low vitamin D levels; supplementation may reduce complications and hospitalizations. 30:18 🧠 Vitamin D influences mood, link to depression, anxiety, and cognitive disorders; optimal levels crucial for overall brain health. I have been deficient for 3 years. I believe it has much to do with my bad health. I asked my doctor if vitamin D was important and related to my bone thinning (I had 6 X-ray images). He said nope and the conversation ended right there and then. Well I am not blind anymore as I used to be. 3 years of sickness and +20 consultations gave me a wakeup call to how normal doctors work (treating symptoms and not root cause). I have learned about nutrition and the importance of eating healthier. I found a dietician who has taught me much of healing with food. She charges $100 per 1-Hr session. I was diagnosed with leaky gut on my 1st consultation with my dietician compared with 3yrs with my previous doctor. Makes me laugh...

About 5 years ago I went to a new doctor because my old doctor believed all supplements were a useless waste of money. This new woman gave me a check-up, an order for a blood test, and a prescription for 50,000 units of vitamin D a day. She told me she automatically prescribed that for all of her senior patients because they were always deficient. I went to the pharmacy and asked the pharmacist if this was common practice, since the amount seemed high to me. She said yes, with some doctors. I asked if it was D3 and she said no. I asked what about K2, and she said, “I’m not here to criticize doctors.” She knew this was wrong, but she was just doing her job. The order for my blood test didn’t even include testing for vitamin D levels. I got a new doctor.

56 for me, middle of last September (lots of sun that time of year) first time it was ever tested and the doctor did it on his own. I suppose because it's listed as one of the supplements I take? Testing for vit D was never included on the yearly blood work before. I upped the dose to 5000 IU/day some days 10000 with K3 because I'd like it to be in the upper range of normal and we don't get much sun this time of year.

Dr. Hyman, I am very interested your claim that our Vitamin D status affects angiogenesis. I do understand that we don't want to encourage angiogenesis in tumors, but we do want to support it for Heart and Skeletal muscle fuel / oxygenation to enable CV health and exercise performance. (I subscribe to Dr. Seyfried's work in starving cancer of fuels like glucose and glutamine.) Any time I find a health finding which is at at cross purposes, it makes me want to dig deeper into the subject in order to understand what is really going on if possible. 1. Could you share the Vitamin D / anti-angiogenesis study you referenced? 2. Would you consider digging deeper into this subject so that you could do interviews and / or an explainer video about it? You will be happy to hear that just last night when I was evangelizing about the benefits of Vitamin D and zero processed carbs for health to a customer, he shared that his doctor referred him to your diet book to help him modify his nutrition in order to control / reverse pre-diabetes. It seems that he is one of the lucky few to have a competent Doctor in these terribly misguided times. I forwarded the above video to him to help get him onboard the Vitamin D path to health. Thanks for all you do. May you and yours be well. ct

I agree with how crucial vitamin D is and how incredibly difficult it is get to from food. The sunshine vitamin cannot really be synthesized since we don't really go out in the sun during the critical hours esp naked enough to get it. Here in the US and ither advanced countries we have access to natural supplements and people go thru medical content. What about countries like India where the supplement awareness at least for something like vit D? Though we have sun almost all the year round thru out the country, we are not really out in the sun naked. Most of the time they eat plant based meals. At least my parents were out in the mid day sun half of the year playing as kids and me and my sis during school breaks but that was decades ago. I got my first vit D testing done 11 years ago and it was 25 or something. I didnt supplement back then. Though I was in the normal range, it was not optimal. Do we also need to consider ethnicity into consideration for some supplements? Are the Indian suncontinent genes or near equator populations different in metabolizing stuff differently than someone from higher longitudes?

He should mention that Yes there is a difference, because the races are not alike. Blacks and darker skinned people need at least 4 times the amount of sun than very fair skinned people do. Fifty percent, not naked, skin needs exposure. It is mind boggling to me to see blacks slathering up in sunscreen in the US.

I took the Function Health test. My vitamin D level was 94. Top of normal is 100. This is their reply: "Your vitamin D levels were in normal reference range but higher than optimal (Greater than 75 ng/mL). While low vitamin D is a problem, having too high levels of vitamin D can cause problems with a buildup of calcium in your blood. This can progress to kidney problems. Your calcium levels and kidney function are normal currently. Please talk to your regular doctor about possibly holding your supplement temporarily and readjusting the dose of your vitamin D supplement". I was taking D3-10,000 / K-2 190 per day. I went back to D3-5,000 / K-2 90 per day except two days a week I also take an additional D-3 5,000 and a K2-100.

I don't know what units of concentration your Dr uses, but I found a very interesting study of natural living tribes in Africa: living outdoors all day, not in the sun all of the time, but with little clothing. The idea is, that in these conditions the body reaches the optimum concentration of D3. The results where an average of 115 nmol/ml with a range of about 60-170. In ng/ml this would be an average of 46 ng/ml with a range of 24-68. All quite normal with a large variation. Hope this helps.

My body was so deprived at the point of me trying to fix my deficiencies that supplementing caused panic attacks (from Vit d) and horrible muscle aches (from iron supplement). I am now using that dminder app to track my sun from outside since I’m having so many issues supplementing. My last labs were at 42.3ng/mL and my Dr thought this was fantastic. Meanwhile I’m still having so many issues including terrible anxiety and depression. Optimal my ass. I think I’ve been low for years because of constant sunscreen use. 42 to one person is not the same for me when I’ve been deficient for so long.
