Everyone likes the idea of a weird girl but no one like the real weird girl.

I don't really think weird girls have been socially accepted, I think the aesthetic of weird girls has gotten co-opted as trends for consumers. The girl is still outcasted, but her clothes, her interests, her sense of humor have become folded into mainstream culture.

I hate how being an outcast has been romanticised. Having people spreading rumours about you and relentlessly criticising you for things they don't critise others for is exhausting and takes a long time to learn to embrace.

I've always been the weird girl, ostracized by peers ever since kindergarten up to college. Found out I'm autistic at 21. This entire trope unveils just how misogyny and ableism meet at the middle and treat neurodivergent women. I have enormous amounts of trauma from being denigrated for my characteristics my entire life, from family to peers to authority figures. Being looked at funny, verbally abused, ignored, humiliated, only to be used when convenient. No shit I have low esteem for others; they have never once treated me with kindness irrespective of my quirkiness.

I am the weird girl, and the funniest remark I probably got is "You seem like a serial killer." I was just sitting in a corner and bored about the party. Weird girls are good in shows and literature because we see their motivations, desires, and their sensitivities and traumas. In real life however, we don't, so people avoid her because they can't figure her out.

I'd argue that society HASN'T become more accepting of the "weird girl," it's just expanded its definition of normal. As someone who went through high school with undiagnosed autism, I had a front-row seat to the dichotomy of the social acceptance offered to girls who were just different enough to be "quirky" in a way that was considered cute or endearing versus those considered truly weird. It was painful to watch others find an identity of admired independence in their slightly off-beat hobbies or interests while my struggles to speak or move normally enough to fit in, let alone navigate the bewildering landscape of acceptable fashion or interests or conversation, got me repeatedly mocked or rejected. Our cultural fetishization with the 'right sort' of weird just makes it that much more painful to be the 'wrong sort,' culminating in a sense that people like me can't even be WEIRD the right way.

As an autistic person with ADHD, I think "the weird girl" almost always tends to fit the criteria for some sort of neurodiversity. I really liked "weird girl" representation in Daria. And almost complete lack of romantic drama. I would not even use the word "weird", since those types of girls simply exhibit aloof behaviour, not willing to waste their time and energy on dealing with the bullshit that surrounds them. And boy, do I love a story centered around a female character AND devoid of unnecessary romantic lines. It's so rare to stumble upon a solid, well-written female character whose aspirations extend far beyond eastablishing romantic relationships.

Although I can agree that our culture has grown more accepting of "weird girls" typically that's more of a certain type of "weird girl" more akin to the "cool girl" trope.

The thing I hate the most about the weird girl trope is how they usually show them as being purposefully weird! Like they’re going out of their way to be weird. I’ve always hated being viewed as weird. I tried my best to imitate what I perceived to be normal or cool but that just made me weirder in the eyes of others. After years of struggling with this, I just learned to be as invisible as possible while also hoping to be noticed for who I really am...not just this weird, awkward creature. Disappointed so little was said about the awkward misfit. Also, weird girl being more mainstream and acceptable is only true if the weird girl is also pretty.

What is objectively "weird" to others is a constantly moving target. I moved when I was still in public school, and went from being relatively well-liked by my peers, to becoming a sort of social pariah once we arrived in our new town. It's not like I was doing anything out of the ordinary, they just wanted to establish some Lord of the Flies social hierarchy with anyone new, and that pushed myself and other newcomers to my school to actually become friends throughout high school. Children can be downright cruel in school settings while being perfectly normal and kind when they're away from the classroom. Teenagers who want to establish their superiority over others by bullying or taunting typically face their own inner turmoil and insecurities that lead to them acting out against other people. "Weird" is such an ambiguous term to apply to anyone, because it can be weird to one person, quirky to another, and admirable to someone else. Seeking out those who enjoy your brand of "weirdness" is what leads to fulfilling relationships and diversified interests. And coming to terms with yourself leads to real freedom and the maturity to love yourself as you are. When you finally stop letting other people define you, it's very liberating.

We had at least two "weird girls" in my year in high school, neither of whom were attractive or weird in a charming way and so they weren't really friends with anyone. I don't really think anything has changed in that aspect people just like labelling themselves as "weird" now which seems to perpetuate this idea that we've become more accepting of "weird" people, when in reality most of them are pretty average in most aspects.

Why is the “weird girl” usually brunette? Weird girl is usually surrounded by what the world perceives as darkness (goth/grunge/witchcraft), or wears dark colors, has dark hair, or dresses either too old or too young for her age.

The difference between the weird girl and the not like other girls girl is that the weird girl isn't doing it to be unique or quirky. She isn't showing off and trying to connect with other people through her "rare and quirky," traits. She isn't doing it for other people. She's just being herself.

Years ago on a middle school bus a boy called me weird. I said, "Thank you for the compliment." He was surprised and didn't bother me after that. It was a defining moment for me. I still got bullied but I took control of the word weird. I define weird for myself as not going with the obvious answer. As an adult I taught my son that being weird is SO much more interesting and fun than being normal. Movies can really mess people up. Bullying also messes people up. I wasn't bullied because I was weird, I was bullied because I was quiet and timid and didn't fight back. I was an easy target. Really, even if I fought back I would have been bullied. I was too tenderhearted and easily wounded. People who would bully picked up on that. Now that I am older and have gained confidence in myself, I don't let bullies get to me. I have the confidence to know that I can stand up for myself and those around me. I know when to fight back and also, importantly, when to walk away from a fight. Yes, I went through a deep depression during middle school and some of high school, but that is my past and I use that knowledge and experience to try to help people who might be bullied now. I am in a healthier place now.

Movies these days romantazie the "Weird Girl." In reality, being the weird girl tends to get you bullied and ostracized. At least that was how it was and still is for me. I've accepted my weirdness, so it doesn't bother me like it used it.

I went through an entire 14 years of school in my town as the "ugly weird girl." Having other kids tell me I should kill myself for being ugly didn't exactly make me well adjusted. Even then, I never let them take all of my joy and things I like from me. I hope all the weird girls out there now keep doing things that they love.

I feel like one aspect overlooked about the smartass weird is that she is often (though not always), ironically as bad as the people she judges. She think she is above "normal" people but her judginess and resistance to be introspective can makes her worse. She thinks other people are lesser for falling into tropes when she often deliberately plays into a trope. I'd love to see a smartass weird girl who learns she isn't above "normals" because people are more complicated than the simpletons she sees them as.

Well...no. Society is in no way accepting of “weird” girls now. Luna, April, Allison, Wednesday, all these girls have at least 2 things in common: they’re odd and ATTRACTIVE. If you were to really do a character study on Dawn Weiners you’ll find that she’s bullied for being unattractive and awkward, and therefore is seen as being weird. Life would be immensely difficult for her in any era because she can’t be validated by her looks, which isn’t fair but is unfortunately true.

I have always been fascinated by the weird girls. My mom told me at exactly the wrong time in my life that "You're so weird no girl is ever going to want to marry you." I spent years trying to figure out what to do with that. I find I resemble most of those tropes. Testosterone hit me like a ton of bricks and convinced me I was becoming a monster. I didn't spend a lot of time socializing. You brought up some of my very favorite movies. Haven't seen Daria but she seems just my type.

I am a weird girl, but I explored this character of mine more during pandemic, e.i. when I was 16 years old. I am happy to understand myself better now (though i still haven't fully). My siblings and family members have always known since a long time that my interests are weird, and i know am treated a tiny bit differently, but am grateful that they don't try to ask if something's wrong with my life or anything like that. But they do sometimes behave like its a major problem that i don't have too many friends. No. 1, i do have friends, but only a few people are worthy of being my closest friends, and no. 2, i have a lot of acquaintances (they are what my parents think are too called friends), it is just that i don't often mention their names coz why should i even have to?? They don't need to know about everything in my life. But that is why i get treated a little strangely at times...they think i do not have anyyy friend, my elder siblings think i will never fit into social circles once i get into college, etc. It hurts me, but anyways, I am just proud of my weirdness and hope i don't lose much of this character in future trying to "fit into social circles".

I was the weird girl during middle school/first two years of high school, and everything here is so true! I used to say I hated everyone and literally ignored my classmates even when they tried to be nice to me, because I've had bad experiences with social interaction before, I was a goth/smartass mix, now I'm kinda goth, still weird, but not trying to be better than other people xD

I felt free being the weird/funny girl. I actually got along well with others and always found friends with my same sense of humor. I could hang with the athletes, the cool kids, the smart kids. I wasn’t ostracized because I was all in black and moody but I wasn’t attractive and alluring either, I mostly was the listener, just observing people because I find folks interesting . I just did my thang, dressed how I liked and was kinda proud I didn’t fit into any box. As you get older none of these roles matter anyway.

The wierd girl is real. It's hard being the wierd girl in real life, when nobody likes you, you sit alone at lunch things that seem normal to you like knowing a literary reference are causes for ridicule and alienation, verbal and emotional abuse are thrown at you every day....

What I've found is that class also separates the acceptance of the weird girl, too. In real life, the weird girls I know, especially as an adult, wear weird clothing to reflect their inner-uniqueness. Their clothing is mismatched or vintage-looking; they look intentionally poor or lower class. The rich weird girl, like Gigi, has far more acceptance because their class allows them to access and navigate different sectors of life without fear of ridicule for their weirdness. Lower middle class or poor weird girls like Allison, Dawn, or Carrie are weird either unintentionally or as a coping mechanism. Class freedom allows some girls to embrace weirdness and some to hide in its shadow.

Carrie wasn't the weird girl. She wanted to fit in but she couldn't because her mother was so psychologically abusive and oppressive.

The weird girl trope is the media's approximation of girls who have autism. Like, if you look at a lot of the popular weird girls shown in this video, I would dare say most of them are autistic on some level. Autism was studied and diagnosed quite commonly among boys, but it's just as common in girls, it just goes undiagnosed most of the time in those girls who are higher functioning. When someone meets a girl like this, they unconsciously pick up on this, but don't consciously understand it, and so that's where their rejection of these girls comes from.

I was definitely thought of as a weird girl growing up. In my early 20’s I had a very bad counselor that gave me an assignment to dress up like I was going to homecoming because she was convinced that I had really wanted to be a homecoming queen in high school. The dress was fine but the experience was stupid,pointless, and I hated it. The personality qualities that got me classified as a weird girl, I would not give them up.
