In my mind he's certainly the best of the era but we'll never know how this generation would have coped in the days of wooden racquets, two feet grounded during the service and - most importantly - NO tiebreakers! In those circumstances, I'd still back peak Rod Laver against any player I've ever seen. Nolé is the best since that time but not necessarily the GOAT. The game has simply changed too much for realistic comparisons to be possible. 👍

"Rocky" had plenty of rivals of the very highest quality who were admired just as much in their day as the Big Three are today. Ken Rosewall was a legend, Roy Emerson was another great player, John Newcombe, Arthur Ashe, etc. If anything, the depth of the top quality field was arguably even greater back then. Lastly, unlike the modern singles specialists, Laver also played in the men's doubles and the mixed doubles at a time when those formats were given much more weight than they are today, as was the Davis Cup, which Laver won five times.
