North Korean defector and activist Yeonmi Park once said: “I am most grateful for two things: that I was born in North Korea, and that I escaped from North Korea.” In her book In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom, she details how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.
Yeonmi joins us to share the bizarre mind games generations of North Koreans have had to endure under the current regime; how the regime isolates citizens under its control with its own calendar and propaganda that extends to the math classroom and the nation’s very vocabulary; the punishment for getting caught watching movies from the Western world; what it’s like to be on Kim Jong-un’s kill list; how your entire extended family and grandchildren not yet born could be punished if you commit what the regime considers a transgression; why there’s a black market for poop in North Korea; and much more.

Seen that HaShem created women able to bear giving birth without fainting, when she reports that she fainted several times during the operation, you know now that an appendixoperation is even more painful than a birth... What I don't understand is, why northkorean surgeons don't use opium or vodka if they run out of official narcotics... I mean in other poor countries they also use "flowerjuice" when they run out of narcotics. Why not in NK ?

How you can be stressed in a socialist paradise? Easy test: Try to pray or read the Holy Scriptures at a place with an observation camera and see what happens. 😮 well what about sticks & stones break bones, but words can never hurt one.(? ) My mother used words that were meant to hurt me and break my spirit, but deep down I could feel a greater power that gave me strength in spite of her sarcastic awful demeaning speeches. I could learn to predict her reactions and just put up my umbrella in these storms .... Vedic literature confirmed that there are two birds sitting together on the branch of the heart. One is called paramatma (super soul). There are uncountable witnesses to all our actions and activities such as sun and moon and others and that includes paramatma. The witness also will give direction to the ordinary soul, if one cares to listen. Otherwise paramatma stays as silent witness.

Yeonmi is a huge liar and is finally being exposed 😭😂 yes she’s North Korean however even her mother has admitted she’s very over exaggerated things and not 100% telling truth. Yeonmi used to be on a tv show in South Korea and was deemed “Paris Hilton” of North Korea for how much better her life was compared to other North Koreans, she’s been exposed for not actually living in poverty and her own mother admitted “yeonmi couldn’t even wrap her head around how the other North Koreans she met were from the same country as her” to yeonmi living in North Korea was luxury and she was part of high ranking family. She wouldn’t understand anything about majority of North Koreans who live in poverty. North Koreans and North Koreans and people who dedicate their life to helping North Korean defectors call our Yeonmis BS all the time and how she’s hurting innocent North Koreans with her false claims, I know North Koreans in Russia ok work visas, they all laugh at her cause of pathetic her lies are. Everytime she claims an “execution” happened. She was called out for lying and there was no executions even happening within the time lines of what she said and definitely not for the reasons she says. North Koreans can get executed yes, but not for watching movies and the stuff she claims. Her story is constantly changing

The show she was on was a South Korean talk show for North Korean defectors telling their stories, yeonmi park could not relate to 60% of the struggle the other North Koreans went through, she was on the show with her mother. It was very clear how privileged she was. So a lot of people were very shocked at the fact she become an “activist” and said such wild things. Yeonmi is also not on any kill list, and if she was they would’ve killed her by now like they’ve done to other North Koreans. Yet here yeonmi is living in USA for more than 9 years now and before that lived in South Korea and before that lived in China after leaving North Korea

The section of "Oppressed people don't know they're oppressed" gives me George Orwell's '1984' novel vibes. When Yeonmi said those who control the language controls your thoughts, the same things is brought up in the '1984' novel, where the language has been so butchered that the future generations to come won't have words to describe anything, to think that they're being opressed and won't question it; they literally won't have the words for it. Honestly, to think think that this dystopian novel was written just after the 2nd world war as a warning to people but the events of the books still unfolded in modern times is actually terrifying. Also, the mention "thought-crime" (30:30 onwards) is just so sureal and is also a major element to Orwell's dystopian fictional society. Everything that Yeonmi is saying about North Korea is the real life version of '1984'. Holy shit

Or she could have read the book first then proceeded to use those words afterwards. We honestly don’t know what’s the honest truth and what has been exaggerated to ensure her credibility and story are accurate so that she won’t be proven to be dishonest. Why has she been flogging her story of escape and survival when all other North Korean defectors may have written about their experiences and journey of survival but yet they go on to live “quieter” lives out of the public eye? Perhaps all other NK defectors are not as naive as Ms Park for they truly understand the full reach of NK’s political system and the power of their own government. People should start taking what is being said with a grain of salt.
