He's the only American POTUS to have done so. He was also shot once at the beginning of a speech he gave, he only went for medical care after he was done speaking. I'm bias though, he's my favorite US POTUS. He also cared very much for the people he served in all aspects of his life, and always thought of his men first while in the military. He was the greatest 20th century US leader, but I think it's a great thing for every person in every country to have a love for a past, or present leader. It helps to build a love for your nation and a love for trying to make it a better place for all your fellow citizens.
