Therapist analyzes The Tale of Jenny and Screech by Ren to discuss to empower people to write their own story, to challenge individuals when they find themselves speaking the language of violence, and to remind others that context causes compassion. This trilogy by Ren is a powerful tale of intergenerational wounding and the impact it has on individuals and society.

Ren wrote Jenny’s tale after reading a newspaper article about a teenage streetwalker who was killed. The line “it’s such a shame” was in the article and Ren felt it was such an inadequate response to the situation. I think the others just grew out of Jenny’s tale.

Yes, consider that Screech is 14 yrs old. Well, so is Jenny. And, in high-heeled shoes, walking the same path late at night. Knowing Violet's story helps us understand how both Screech and Jenny each had unsavory youths. It is such a shame.

You said it all. To Ren’s motivation for doing this, he said that it’s too easy for people to turn away from situations like this…he wants people to confront the harsh reality of intergenerational violence. It’s not easy to watch, and Ren said it’s not easy for him to perform. You reacted to the moment at the beginning of Violet’s tale where Ren the artist has to pause and gather himself so that he could perform the song. In the old tradition of Bards, that’s called putting on the Minstrel’s Mask in preparation for telling a horrible story. He said it takes a piece of him as well. This song makes me 100% want to see a Screech and help him, or find a Jenny or Violet and help them find their voice (I have 2 teenage daughters). So mission accomplished. Think of what a great writer and storyteller you’d have to be to create this song and not have it come off as exploitative…he was so careful about so many details…but one that really stood out to me was that he never put himself in the first person “shoes” of Jenny and Violet…and only told their story through narration, while he did assume the roles of Screech and Stevie, because he actually can understand their lived experience. This guy is doing art, music, filmmaking, snd storytelling at a completely different level. Also, you may enjoy knowing that he actually appears to be a sweet goofball in real life…but he’s lived through such heaviness that he just seems to have a different level of power.

@@Hoop_23 true, originally they were released separately, however once Violet's tale was released, it changes the narrative in very powerful ways. Ren knew this, and released the trilogy together in one video because of it. The revelation at the end changes up everything and injects empathy into the flood of emotions experienced through Violet's Tale. Violet's Tale is so powerful that many people that dont have Jenny and Screech's Tale fresh in their minds miss the end completely, and are just left with the horror of Violet's Tale. There's reason why Ren marked the Trilogy altogether as the Official Music Video. Respectfully. 🤓

This is such an insightful reaction. Ive been a 911 dispatcher for almost 20 years. Long enough to see (hear) generational violence. I'm also a domestic violence survivor and because Ren was so spot on with the realism of this, I worried about him. "Do you think I want to do this Violet?" Is a statement that comes out of many domestic abusers. My hope is that someone that is an abuser see's this video and now knows how appalling it is. I also hope that someone that is going through domestic violence can see how they need to get out of the situation before it's to late. Im so glad that shortly after I discovered The Tales of Jenny and Screech I also found Ren's 1 million subscribers video that showed the caring person that he is. Do you think I want to do this?" This is the perp blaming the victem in real time and quite disturbing. There is the ever present layer of GUILT by those in Power or who bully or commit crimes of passion, anger or what not. By the way, Jenny was presumably into prosititution. The clues are obvious once you think about it. Walking the same street 1000 times before late at night. Rosie Cheeks. High heel shoes. Next, I suspect Screech's girlfriend was actually with Patrick at the time he called her on the phone. Hence, neither one was going to answer him.

Patrick and Screech’s girlfriend were together, probably at Patrick’s place (good thing Screech didn’t get in because there would have been more murders). Ren filmed a whole series of Instagram stories leading up to the release of Screech’s tale where he (Ren) pretended someone stole his phone, and screech started posting from it. You got to see how poorly he treated Patrick and his girlfriend, but also a disturbing interaction with his father. I feel so conflicted by this piece because I think it is arguably Ren's strongest performance, even better than Hi Ren. However, because of the somber tone of the piece and the absolutely visceral reaction that Ren is able to evoke in people, I've had to caution several friends about watching it, because i know their past and they may see the video as just a chain of triggers for previous trauma. Ren really sets himself into the master storyteller class with this. His compelling playing and singing draws the audience in so well, they forget the entire piece is called The tale of Jenny and Screech, and when Violet's tale starts, we viewers are too deep into the story to pull back and think how Violet might relate to Jenny and Screech. The ending is an emotional gut punch that hits like a freight train. Excellent reaction, especially going through generational violence.

Ren is a modern day bard painting such vivid imagery with his storytelling that it pulls you in and forces you to keep watching - even when it gets physically uncomfortable during Violet’s Tale. And Ren uses this ability to shed light on far too real issues in the world. Ren is special. Great reaction. I’m so glad you listened (even if some people didn’t ask very nicely) and did the full trilogy and went it blind for the last two. Not just for the reaction we get to see, but for yourself. This is just such a masterpiece in storytelling. Now you get to wait in eager anticipation with the rest of us, cause Ren has said that he and his cinematographer Sam have plans to film a pilot to pitch to Netflix when Ren has finished treatments in Canada and moves back to the UK. All we know is that it will be in the same raw style as this trilogy, but that is enough for me to say that if Netflix doesn’t give Ren his own show, they are fools 😂

We read these stories every day, they're broadcast to us on the news, documentaries, tictok crime content. And we all gloss over to some extent or another. Thank you for listening to us. I think you can probably see why this particular trilogy needs to be in one sitting, it wouldn't convey the same message if the pieces were separated in time. I can reassure you that though Ren has some other tracks in multiples (Money game 1 to 3 and Love music 1-4), they are not 'bardcore' stories and can be enjoyed one by one. You're reactions are excellent and insightful. I was not subbed before, but I am now, thank you.

I think Jenny and Screech grew up in the system (Stevie would have been jailed for murdering Violet) and if they were separated by the system they'd maybe not have known about each other. Your insight into this makes it one of the most thoughtful and educated reactions to this trilogy I have seen (and I've seen a lot). Sincerely, thank you.

Absolutely LOVE that you and team look through the lyrics and discuss what messages you can share from them, deep breakdowns are amazing and so valuable, but, as someone who enjoys blind reactions, I'd love to throw out a suggestion for reacting blind first, then going deeper afterwards. Brilliant work team.

“What in the Shakespearean tragedy“ are the exact words that fell out of my mouth, the first time I saw these tales. When watching Ren I’ve often thought that Shakespeare would gladly clear the stage of his players to make time for Ren to perform. Really appreciate your reaction and ability to empathize with all of cast, including Screech. I’m a student of the teachings of Dr. Marshall Rosenberg, with his work in NonViolent Communications: A Language of Compassion. It wouldn’t surprise me if you were familiar with it. If not, I believe you would be grateful to add it to your knowledge base. Love what you do here in building this connective community for growth and healing. You matter and what you are doing makes a positive difference in our lives. 🫶

Great reaction and insightfull. On a sidenote, Patrick cannot open the door because he is with Screech's girlfriend. There is a vid from Ren replaying the scene before Screech's attack on Jenny where this is played out. Ren is an absolute master at creating tapestries of art and music and theatre in one.

I always love Ren's guitar work, but never more so than in the intro to Screech's tale. The first part is slower and contemplative - as though Screech is in shock, thinking about what he's done. Then we have the faster part, which instantly makes me think of Screech fleeing from the scene of the crime, running until he's worn out and breathless. Setting the scene through music, without a single word.
