Sorry for the error guys. The P12 PWM PST is simply the model with PWM (800 to 1800) plus a Sharing Technology that allows for daisy-chaining it to another fan. The entire range is pressure-optimized. My mistake! - Mike

Hah, saw this right as I was about to point that out. Might wanna pin? The differentiation between pressure and airflow optimised is in the initial letter (P12 = pressure opt 120mm; F12 = airflow opt 120mm; P14 = pressure opt 140mm, etc).

The biggest thing you can do for sound with any fan setup is to use loose rubber screws (or Noctua’s rubber peg mounts) and isolation pads everywhere that a fan would touch the case. The harmonics of your case interacting with the vibrations from the fans is what gives you that droning noise that you’re probably familiar with. The other most impactful thing you can do to get silent performance out of your fans is to set up your fan curves very carefully. There will always be RPMs where your fans will start to interact with the harmonics of the case poorly, and there will also be RPMs where your fans will run almost totally silent. Find those silent RPMs and set your fan curves to just transition between them in steps instead of smoothly transitioning through speeds. This also improves the life of the fans, as they will almost always be running at a single speed without having to slow down or speed up.

I've long been a fan of the Noctua A12s and the Arctic P12s but this review has opened my eyes on the Wonder Snail. Their price is comparable to the P12 in my country so will definitely want to check some out for myself

I love roundups like this, and greatly appreciate the effort you all went to making this happen. I picked up a Corsair 5000D Airflow and when I saw the P12 PWM 5 pack for $30 USD there was no question. The Phanteks T30 is on my list for if I need high performance for a radiator, but for case fans it seems silly to not just buy Arctic.

Great job Mike, and just as many of us expected, the Gentle Typhoon remains a beast of a fan for the price even 7 years+ after they were designed (if you can find them, and also find the right ones). Nidec cooked up one hell of a design, I wish they'd update it, maybe combine the original core elements with some of the newer technologies, maybe even go thicc boi like Phanteks.

Love these vids Mike! Really great stuff! Personally I love both Arctic P12 and Noctua A12. They are both really good for what their respective markets. My last build had a pack of 3 P12's, and that was amazing for the price. My current build is a Ghost S1 without tophat, and so the only real option was a Noctua NF-A12x15... but after that Arctic released the P12 Slim, so I guess I could have gone for that. The T30 seems great, but very few SFF-cases can take a 30mm fan. The Gentle Typhoon and Wonder Snail are great too, but its a shame you can't seem to find them anywhere in Europe.

The one major flaw is using decibels to appraise noise performance. You can have two different fans each producing 40db. And one can sound extremely irritating because of its unique blend of frequencies, while the other sounds smooth and pleasant. Both at 40db. You could even have something at a higher decibel level that sounds significantly more pleasant than something at a lower decibel level.

I’ve been happy with the T30. Running 3 of them on a pull on a front mount radiator. I removed the rubber dampers to give it a flush mounting surface.

Despite this video coming out months after I got my pc fans, it wouldn't change my choice. I value budget options and got the Arctic P12 5 pack and I like them. This video might be good to pass on to friends if they ask me for pc fan advice haha.

The P12 5pack is a long time best value, tho, at some rpm's they are loud, some rubber padding in the corners would help, esp in cases that create echo's and resonance sounds. I just build a Paean Premium case system and that case is LOUD compared to a O11 mostly due to panels that resonate with fans/pumps ;)

@@EvL--_-- There's full-size fan dampeners you can buy that helps! They're like square shaped o-rings for the entire fan. They function as small ducts (no loss in pressure), vibration reducer, and spacers (great for intake).

@@EvL--_-- you really just need rubber spacers or washers to slip over the screws, every hardware store will have them. Technically, if you can find a larger one that acts as a duct, it'll be "better" overall, but a 1mm rubber spacer won't have that much of an effect on a fan.

Thanks so much for all the testing! Just a few weeks late for my new Itx build, but I'm definitely happy to have spent an extra $12 on the Arctic fan to replace the H60`s stock one. I'm definitely keeping the T30 and Gentle Typhoon in mind for the future.

The sweet spot for Arctic fans is their 140mm P14 fans, they're much quieter and push a ton of air while still giving amazing static pressure results for use with rads (thus explains their Liquid Freezer II AIO line up performing so well), in addition I think the 5 pack for the P14s was around $34.99 USD at Micro Center locations.

Something seems off with the "bad" performance of the Arctic P12 in the noise normalized tests. Every noise normalized comparison I've seen puts them pretty close to the NF-A12x25. Maybe the 39dBA is a bit high, since the fan runs at almost full speed, a 35dBA comparison would be interesting. Or maybe they produce a frequency which the A filter is more sensitive to compared to other fans. So a raw 39dB test could be also quite interesting, or maybe even a 39dBC filter test.

Same, every single other youtuber that reviewed them put them in line or just behind the A12x25, with the exception of their characteristic whine at around 1000/1100rpm. Something is definitely off with his methodology.

I wonder if it's anything to do with the airflow testing chamber used rather than a regular case, you'd ideally want to measure flow in an airflow chamber but noise levels in a typical computer case where vibrations are more likely to sound as they would in real life.

I agree. Also normally they both beat the Nidec fans. As they are basically the same design maybe the test didnt favour them somehow. Phanteks seems to be the one anyway!

I'd love to see the Scythe Kaze Flex 120mm on here as well. Scythe even uses them on some of their recent CPU heatsinks too, and they're great as case fans as well.

Great review. The only thing I'm missing is subjective noise "quality". For example Noctua puts a lot of care of this aspect, it creates a bit of turbulence on purpose to avoid harmonics (without sacrificing significant efficiency) and provides anti vibration gadgets to avoid case resonance. In my subjective opinion, more important than decibels is if the noise is "beautiful" or annoying

One thing also to note is that even though arctic doesn't come with a splitter or anything, it's already able to be daisy-chained so it doesn't need a splitter. Also, you can get "rubber screws" that are rubber dampers, and it's like 5 bucks for 20 of em.

Yes exactly! 120mm based rads are vastly inferior to 140mm based rads. And all other applications as well. A 140x38mm fan exists from Silverstone, but it seems a bit old and loud

The new GT by XPG have been improved from the old ones, making less noise and maybe a little more cfm. You can see like a drop shape at the base of the blades and it comes with anti-vibration pads !

I love the look of that T30 and in my opinion you are getting a lot for your money with the 3 modes, accessories and performance , I mean its beating noctuas and they have some of the best fans !

there are also EK Vardars 140mm, people actually say they’re good, i have 2 but they don’t feel anything close to the T30 sturdy construction, but they’re similar to the P12

Ended up replacing them with Lian Li UNI AL120s since I have a lighting addiction lol. Am considering buying a bunch of T30 or Noctua NF-A12 chromax's and slap the Phanteks Halo rings on them all.

The Noctua iPPC ones have a 140mm variant, I bought some because my old 2080 ti ran hot and my case sucks for airflow (original Phanteks Evolv ATX). As intake fans they worked wonders, no longer was my 2080 ti producing benchmark scores like a regular 2080, while the GPU still sucked at least it was performing kinda like it should. But if (when?) Phanteks drops a 140mm T30 I'll be getting some.

Arctic fans win by literal quantity. Technically with 5 of their fans, you can have the same air volume output as a single full blast phanteks, but at a fraction of the noise level. I have been a long time customer of arctic because of their price and performance through quantity. Also what about the cooler master sickle flow series? They have been around a long time, and I wonder how accurate are their advertised specs to real world.

I have a sickle flow, I haven't tested it as intensely as the video. IMO, it has a whine to it at low speeds if you're trying to run a quiet system. It is objectively worse than the masterfan series, not that great when compared with the big brands. I replaced mine with Halo Master Fans, because the MF's were about 15$(1600 yen), and they're just better. Quieter, RGB, more power, integrated daisy chaining.

Hello, sorry I don't understand English very well. Are you saying that 5 Artic make less noise than one phantek? Which fans would you advise me to have a maximum of silence. I have no problem with temperature even in summer.

@@calypsojordana3274 Yes, that is what he meant. If 5 fans spin slowly, they could make less noise than 1 fast spinning fan. Those 5 fans can also still push more air than the 1 fan. Because the Arctic fans are cheaper, you can save money and still get good airflow by installing more of them in your case, such as 2 front, 2 back. You can buy high end fans but it will cost a lot. Each Noctua fan is $32 USD, each Arctic is $7-10 USD each according to amazon. Noctuas are quieter, but at such a cost many people will find them too expensive as case fans.

Decibels don't add up like linear values, they're a logarithmic value. 5 x 40dB fans is 47dB - not 200dB! If you choose a fan and find its highest CFM to noise range, and then run multiple of that same fan at that range it's an easy way to increase airflow a lot without increasing noise by much.

Ya, not many test the 140 range where options are a bit different. The "noise blocker b14-ps" Is the most interesting in the 140mm seeing how it's near 30mm thick like the t30.

I've heard that 120mm is a sweet spot for static pressure dependent situations where larger fans start losing that benefit relatively speaking. But I don't have any authoritative links to back that up. 140 isn't much bigger than 120 and the difference would be small.

@@Autotrope looking at the airflow rate per hour the differences can be quite dramatic. So bigger fans should allow slower rpms for the same air volume which should result in quieter operations. Therefore can't wait for a similiar video with 140mm fans.

Personally, I love my Silent Wings 3 HS. They produce good airflow AND static pressure while beeing virtually silent at moderate speeds. They have a lot of headroom rpm wise, and their sound is not as annoying as others at full speed

Great video with a nice twist…went for one rear Silent wings 3 to replace a Fractal AL12 Prisma in my second build & accompany the three front classic brown Noctua A12x25. As for the new build, opted for Noctua Chromax black swap line up (from NH-U12A, NF-A12x25 to NA-HC7 & NA-SAVP1 & V2) which got me over the ARGB fans world for good.

I have used many different fans, some are really silent, but have bearing noises or clicking/ticking that is not noticed by a dB meter. Don't know if you noticed things like that? I'm very happy with my Noctua NF-A14 chromax fans. Completely silent at low RPM levels. Didn't expect that many other fans to perform that much better. Thanks for the overview and nice graph.

I have bought 7 different Noctua fans. Everyone of them developed bearing noise. I went with Arctic fans and they are still good after 3 years. Also, case fans from NZXT from 6 years ago are also without any noise. My experience with Noctua has been very bad.

@@HardwareCanucks Try sweeping the PWM range (.1% per second) while capturing the dB output of the fan. That way you get a detailed rpm vs dB graph that captures every resonance of the fan. PWM sweeps can be easily done with Remi Mercier's fan control. For ticking/bearing noise I would recommend placing a microphone that does not exhibit the proximity effect (omindirectional) close to the fan (~10 to 15cm) and recording it at low rpm. Using an FFT analysis you can show the frequency response of the fans tone (ideally shouldn't have any peaks besides one high blade pass frequency and the lower peak from motor commutation). A Spectogram view (essentially FFT over time) can visualize periodic noise like motor clicking/buzzing or imperfect bearings. Both the spectogram and FFT frequency analysis can be done with most DAWs like Audacity or Adobe audition. @@OmerTheGreatOne Interesting, I have been running them daily for 3~4 years now and have not experienced issues. I run them almost always at their lowest speeds, don't know if that makes a difference.

I know this is 'old' but I had never heard of the Phanteks T30's. I've not been thrilled with the EK Vornado fans that came with their AIO. Used your link, got a 3-pack, and have dropped my fans more than 10% in power while keeping slightly better temps than stock. THANK YOU for this review work and for turning me on to the T30 fans!

They have all sorts of resonance and vibrations at all RPMs I've tested. Most horrible fan noise I've come across. If you're sensitive to noises, avoid them at all costs.

When I was shopping for fans, I ran into those industrial noctua ones. It seems they are really designed for industrial applications with improved life in more hazardous environments + performance not limited by noise. All those pluses are not relevant for a home pc. But it does bring the question, how durable are those cheap fans?

One of my favorite fans, Fractal Design's Venturi line. Can't buy them with any case or cooler that Fractal produces, they're currently at just under $20 bucks a pop.

Missing Noiseblocker NB-eLoops (P12 and P14). The 140mm one is the best 140mm fan (dB to SP ratio) IIRC. The 120mm is level with the A12-25 until about 800rpm. Big downside is if they are used in pull... the noise gets worse and worse past 650rpm. Still, one the best fans out there. Also, IMO, the GTs have a less than pleasing bearing noise. The A12-25 and T30 have a less "harsh", "tinny" frequency.

I wouldn't say a run for it's money. They're great for sure, but not exactly better if you want to get technical and pricing isn't that aggressive by comparison(they cost around the same where I live and availability sucks). Noctua also comes with good extras in the box. Even with a similar sound level(will depend on the fan speed) it has a more pronounced motor noise compared to the A12x25. Still great though, but doesn't give Noctua a run for its money, at all.

I bought the P14, not sure if that was a better choice than the p12. I couldn't find the Gentle typhoon anywhere for under $38... Would love to know where you picked it up. *amazon has it for $20 now. damn **nvm that's vetro not nidec. the Nidec is $84 now! 🤔 maybe I throw a T30 in as the rear exhaust. Wait $56!? Probably just Amazon mark-up let's check... nowhere else has it. ok🤷♀️

I am a bit late but adata sells a rebranded version of the gentle typhoon called the xpg vento pro and they are $18 on newegg right now, so $8 cheaper than stated in the video. It even says gentle typhoon on the back sticker.

I use the Phanteks T30 fan on a 120mm AIO on a SilverStone SG05BB-Lite mini-ITX build. It was an upgrade to the Corsair H60 120mm AIO on a Ryzen 7 3700X CPU. On the stock Corsair fan, CPU temperature under gaming load hit 60 degC a few times and hovered around 58 degC. On the Phanteks T30, the temperature now very rarely hit 54 degC, and mostly fluctuates between 52 and 53 degC while playing Halo Infinite multiplayer.

I doubt they'll be any better. Blades design didn't change that much (if at all) and they capped it's rpm even lower than previous models. If anything, their marketing changed a bit, focusing more on looks and rgb lights.

A huge point everyone forget is the expected lifetime. The Arctic fans are great but have terrible motors. The fans will die really really fast. The Noctua and Phantek fan have a way way higher expected lifetime. When we compare the NF-A12 with the Artic we have more than 3 times the expected lifetime. The NF-A12 should last for over 150k hours and the Arctic only for around 40k. I had fans with simular motortechnology and they died, one over another, in months not years, MONTHS. I will never buy a cheap fans with this typ of motor again. I hate to produce unnecessary e-waste.

I use arctic p12 for my case fans. Silent, optimal performance. And i can buy a lot to fill my case. 1 expensive fan cant fight against cheap good quality fans i guess

I chose the ML120 rgb cuz I wanted some RGB for the front fans and they seemed to be the best bang for buck being pretty quiet with really good cooling performance but still giving me that RGB and then I used the NFA12 for the top and exhaust fans

Okay ... here's what I would have liked to see; normalized TEMPERATURE and SOUND aside, why not just see which fan(s) is the most efficient. Normalize the RPM's and measure the CFM's. Do this over multiple RPM settings. Disappointed not to see this ... test incomplete !

Great video and super helpful! It could be beneficial in the future to really try and add flow restriction to see how the units compare. Radiator+case vent holes+mesh screen. Or the fans pushing into positive pressure in a case. The only reason I say this is that I found the results interesting considering the specified static pressure of the noctua IPPC is actually higher than the T-30. Curious to know if the units deviate from their specs or if there isn’t enough flow restriction in this test to see that difference. You could try simulating it with maybe a few mesh screens stacked together or something similar. But either way great test and I think it does a great job of showing the relative performance difference. Very surprised by some of the results!

As far as what other fans you could test, I would toss in the EK Vardar fans, and the Corsair QL series fans. The other obvious choice for a future video would be to test 140mm size fans.

I think the charts hurt the Arctic because it's not hitting 39db. They stay very quiet. Also being 1/2 to 1/3 the price of all the others. It's an obvious choice.

As someone who doesn't mind the noise from the fans it's been hard to find good reviews that show the full potential of the fans. I'm super happy that I have 6 corsair ml 120s on the way. Had to look around at manufacturer websites for specs and hoped they performed as advertised and I'm glad you put out a review that shows what fans can truly do.

@@samak91 Dude that is just nitpicking. Honestly why review a fan in a windtunnel when you should be reviewing it in the environment it will belong in? All temperatures were tested in a Fractal Meshify C on a Corsair H60 or Noctua NH12S depending on the chart. Honestly that is a much better review for a computer fan. Being in a computer.

Enjoyed the video. I agree the Arctic P12 fans are great. I am running 8 P12 and 2 P14 bionix ones in an O11D mini. Being able to run so many at such low RPMs results in silent and efficient cooling.

Exactly, i have 30+ fans in my PC and most of them are P12, 4 rads (2 480mm and 2 360mm, 60mm thick push pull,) i have them max out at 670rpm, deadly silent.
