As an Indian Greg, allow me to explain the topper one. Topper basically means the highest rankers in class. In India, everything comes down to grades, nothing else matters. You have to know how to write what you know properly in exams, otherwise you won't get marks. Teachers have very specific answer key and you need to magically match it if you want to score good. I know people (including myself) who knew everything but couldn't write it down exactly like they wanted and therefore didn't get the deserved marks. On the other hand, there are people who do not understand the concepts but know how to memorize and write and they do very well in exams. It's a flawed outdated system and no one likes it.

I was just reminded of when I was in elementary school I imagined that my desk was a hospital, the homework sheets were patients, my pencil was Dr Ticonderoga, and my pens were nurses. There were all kinds of intrigues and plots including one of the pens rebelling against the pencil and being locked in the pencil pouch until she agreed to do her job, and one of the patients dying and the pencil covered it up with the help of one of the pens. I remember it being very entertaining
