What makes this "comfort food" of cinema so irresistible? The contradictory Rom-Com Genre has had its ups and downs, but these unrealistic yet ever-relatable movies are seeing a comeback. Please make one about the "Latin character trope" Mainly Hollywood only uses WHITE men and women that are kinda 'sunkissed' but not people of colour. Latin actors are only contracted if they are White (the best roles) and black for characters that are villains like tv shows Breaking bad and the saga Fast and furious. Latin countries are diverse, with black, native, biracial of both etnies, white, asian, even arab people from history immigration shifts. For example, it is rare a brazilian or argentian in movies being represented by black or native actors. Only white ones

But there is male/female friendship in rom-com (if the guy is gay or friend zoned hahaha). Agreed, it always bugs me that there's typically a Third Act Misunderstanding, during which one half of the main couple, usually the male, is caught in a compromising position with someone else by their partner, who normally storm off in a huff, without even giving them the chance to explain their actions. This unnecessary conflict almost always drives the last half hour of the movie! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Well, I think the way "hate" is portrayed in romantic movies isn't quite hate, it's more of "oh, I'm annoyed because you're a jerk, but feel bad with myself for being so attracted to you" such feeling causes the protagonist to lash out their frustrations on the romantic interest, creating an "enemies to lovers" trope.

A do believe that is the case though. Love can so easily turn to hate. Both are such strong feelings. I don't believe however that it's easy for hate to turn to love. It takes a lot of understanding to get to that point. I think that's why these stories have this trope. There is a reason to keep the characters apart for so long.

Maybe that's why I loved My Big Fat Greek Wedding so much. It was a romcom that didn't feel like a romcom. It didn't follow that formula. The love interests found an immediate connection with almost zero arguing between each other and the only obstacle (Toula's parents) relented halfway through the movie. And then the story just became about this woman discovering her talents that could help her get a better job, planning a wedding, and realizing the value of unconditional family love.

Although friends to lovers isn’t a bad trope, it kind of bugs me that we don’t get to see more hetero platonic relationships that don’t need to bubble into romance. When a (straight) girl and guy are friends in real life, they’re kind of annoyed by people around them that they’re “meant to be” which can actually hurt their relationships. There are people who actually start dating because it’s expected of them and it turns out forced and unauthentic. I remember my best friend was a guy and my parents took pleasure in calling him my boyfriend. My step dad really pushed it to the point I started crying (he’s stupid tbh). He moved away at some point and not long after did I realize that, even for a kid, he was very overbearing and toxic and I was honestly lucky that he happened to leave my life.

This is one of the reasons why I love FRIENDS. Although Monica and Chandler get together and Ross and Rachel fall for each other, Phoebe and Joey stay just friends throughout the series. Joey and Rachel try to be a couple but fail and see that they're just friends too. What I also like about it is that the show is about FRIENDS not the couples, even though they're a big part of the story. The Greeks had a better group of words: Eros(lustful love), Philia(platonic love), Pragma practical, and symbiotic love), Ludus(playful love), Storge(loyal and respectful) love, Agape (unconditional love, i don't know if this one even exists) Mania(obsessive love) You get the picture. I love romance as much as the next person, but I've been really critical of the genre these past few years. I think a great love story needs more than just 2 hours to take place, it hardly gives any time for the characters to develop. There are a few exceptions, but most movies really rush into it without solving their problems.
@RachelSpicyG
@RachelSpicyG 3 роки тому
Totally agree! That’s why although I love romantic movies, I will always prefer tv relationships. You really get to explore the romance and get to know the characters and observe their ups and downs. I feel hopeful. Cultural consciousness has shifted in a way that that people see the more toxic narratives for what they are. Take for instance the reception of "Sierra Burgess Is A Loser", Netflix's homage to 80s teen rom-com's with a "relatable" character evocative of a plus-size Molly Ringwald inhabiting the selfie-era equivalent of the Cyrano De Bergerac story. Viewers HATED it and hated the lead character, characterizing it as a creepy bordering on criminal and vaguely rapey. I was a little taken aback and confused by the strength of that reaction until I realized that the movie's demographic audience, teens and early 20s, weren't steeped in romantic comedy conventions in which deception and stalking for love and other morally questionable actions were normalized and portrayed sympathetically, as well as a general blindness to the concept of consent. In the historical context of romantic comedy conventions, that character wasn't particularly loathsome or awful compared to her (mostly male) cinematic progenitors, but modern viewers are attuned to scrutinize the character's behavior and place it into the framework of real life. They also don't view an attractive character being a few extra pounds as sufficiently persecuted or pitiable such that her desperate actions seem understandable under the weight of her feelings of unworthiness, because they don't view her appearance as an extraordinary burden. Although the popularity of Twilight and Fifty Shades of Grey shows us that we still have a ways to go. People may still think that women should invest their time and safety and emotional health in the pursuit of 'fixing' toxic men, but they know now at least it's wrong to trick someone into kissing you, at least, and the vision of who deserves love and who is capable of inspiring it is less exclusionary and misogynistic.

Kevin Smith's, "Chasing Amy," is a good example of a Rom-Com having a more honest ending. The "love" couple in question, after all is said and done, are not acknowledged to have ended up together, or even as friends, but are put into more of a, "Maybe get some coffee sometime," kind of situation. The ending leaves room for that "Happily ever after," which is, more or less, expected of a Rom-Com, but gives the entire story and it's principle characters more depth because of the reality it shares with the audience. Throughout the movie, you can see how writer, Kevin Smith, even makes subtle and realistic jabs at what is/was typically insincere about Rom-Coms.

What I love so much about Jane Austen is that her portrayal of love and social interactions were very realistic. Like how she got everyone to actually have a view of the world and that causing many misconceptions, or how characters realize their mistakes and flaws. Also is great how love is portrayed as something you have to put work into, not something that just happens, like Elizabeth and Mr Darcy who fall in love through realizing their own misconceptions about each other and discovering their real character based on their actions and behavior, also they actually share interests and the same set of values, which makes them an strong couple.

When Harry Met Sally is one of my favorite movies. 💕 It is an escape for me. I've probably seen it over 100 times. But in reality, most of my best friends are men. I don't think I've ever once thought that men and women couldn't be friends.

it would be cool to see a video about the 'other person' in these rom-coms, like the person who's dating the love interest at the beginning, they're usually treated as being totally one-dimensional and they often get mistreated/ignored in order for the main characters to get their big love story

Disney's Maleficent (2014) is the most honest depiction of "true love" in cinema. Superior to any rom com. Still waiting for an in-depth analysis of the movie by this channel.

Getting married destroyed rom-coms for me. The true intimacy of a real relationship makes these intolerable. They are just so superficial.

@@mhawang8204 I'm so sick of this one. "you were hardly ever married to his mother and that was like 5 years ago!" This means Josh and Cher were step-siblings for probably a year, maybe two, on paper. So, she was an 11 year old girl and he was a 13-14 year old boy. They are clearly complete opposites in personality and it is seriously doubtful that they hung in the same social circles. Does anyone honestly think they really ever saw themselves as brother and sister?

My least favorite part of a rom com is that part near the end where they've already fallen for one another but they're separated due to the underlying conflict in the film. Sometimes it's the simplest thing that they could have easily spoken to each other about. That being said, I love the genre and I'm enjoying the wave of self-awareness that we're currently in.
