This is one weird wood burning stove....
OneTigris has a number of wood stoves which they offer including one that I considered to be rather poor, the Splicing Stove. Check out my review of that stove if you are interested in why I disliked it so much.
Anyways, this is their Titanium "Mini" Stove that's not really small; I purchased this to see whether or not I would like it more than the stove that I just mentioned.
This is a first look and field test....

You could also use your Dremel tool to cut notches that will allow the supports to be moved in a bit. Maybe you could contact One Tigris and recommend that they modify the stove to add a feeding port as well as two sets of notches to accommodate various pot sizes. Thanks again for an excellent review. 👍🏻

Here's the thing: I don't WANT to have to re-design a thing I just paid $50 for. You could do EXACTLY what you suggest OR you could just buy a better designed wood stove. I agree with your suggestion about Luke contacting One Tigris. MAYBE they'll listen to him. He clearly knows more than whoever designed this $hit-show.

You could also cut a couple more notches in the pot holders, to move them further to the corners for larger pots, or put two parallel to each other for smaller containers. I'm amazed at how Luke can spot issues with a product after just one test. Where are the manufacturers' design and testing departments?!!

I purchased a Vargo Titanium stove a few years ago that suffered from the same problem, but in the opposite place. The bottom plate had holes, but the walls didn't. Luckily, it did have a hinged door to feed fuel into, that could be left open. The stove was great but I watched a YT video where someone ended up drilling ventilation holes into the sides of it, which I mimicked, and it works even better! It's crazy how these "outdoor" companies don't think of things like that. Aside from that minor flaw, I love that stove and still use it 6+ years later.

I see that as a practical solution of adding feed port. OneTigris could add fourth wall with feed port, add square bottom plate. That way would have 3 or 4 sided stove. I guess would also need change in the pot stands too. Keep up good work!

Agree with your comments, a good review. As for sitting your mug/cup on it, try using a 'Stanley cookset for 2' mug. Use this regularly when at work, good bit of kit BUT very small diameter base, a good test piece. Even tricky on a bcb fire dragon ( before being tweeked with multitool) Appreciate all your reviews, observations are useful and spot on 👍

A place to feed wood to the fire would be nice but, depending on what I am using it for, it isn't a deal breaker. It packs flat, weighs less than 1lbs, has plenty of airflow, is big enough to accommodate all but the smallest pots & pans that a person would most likely bring on a trip into the backwoods and it's reasonably priced. It may not be for thru hiking with very small cooking pots, but it seems like it would be good for shorter excursions on foot, backwoods camping or canoe trips.

I agree with what was said here. Any wood stove needs a feeding port. One design I like the looks of is the Richard Outdoor Fire Trough Stove. Think about it, wood is in a long narrow form factor. A trough or rectangle makes more sense than square, hexagon, or triangle.
@billbudd99
@billbudd99 Рік тому
Luke, It doesn’t look that large having only 3 sides . Anyway, that’s up for opinion, but it does break down flat . It seems the design should have been a hinged door port on one of the 3 sides . So you could feed it, light it & close it. The idea you have of just cutting a access port out permanently brings to point with then 2 sides pushing the fire tender out the weakest link that you cut out & a safety issue with fire falling out because it’s design is basically a stackable feed system, & not a side load system. That idea would work on a 4 side system but defeats the triangle design. As far as the removable 3 piece racks, again you could use a bigger pot & eliminate the 3 pieces. The perfect deign would be 2 triangle bottom pieces , one as is for the bottom & hinged to the bottom so it folds up being connected to the bottom pieces . Also , who wants to pay $40 bucks & then have to cut titanium . A lot of sugar for a dime “Anyway, don’t cut it , you review as is which is what you do. Let them revise the prototype. Thanks for the review. I certainly won’t buy one ! based on your review. Rather use an mre stove!
@terrym1065
@terrym1065 Рік тому
Literally a "twig" stove. Feeding is the caveat here, without the mentioned modification, it's very limited to size of material being burned and having to remove the container to do so is a con. With the modification the whole stove becomes a much better option, bigger/longer fuel materials can be used and no removal of the container is a plus. This is an almost DIY stove, many mods needed to bring it into practicality. Easy fixes but one shouldn't have to. Nice first look Luke👍 Keep em' coming....

My Gen 1 Firebox stove doesn't have a feed port like the later versions do, so it's a 'top loader' too. To light it I drop a fire-lighter of some kind in lit then put the stage one twigs in. I guess the same would work for that one.

I use the Vargo ti wood stove.. and i've found that splitting 4" wood into quarters, cut at the height of the stove... standing them up with space between then dropping the sticks in the cracks between them... a top down light is the usual way to light them, which requires a bit of thought beforehand... overall, i think that that stove would be very versatile , food for thought, the drawback of these stoves, is that they burn up quick... hence cutting a port might amplify that problem... using wood thats cut to the height, aprox 1 1/2" to 2" square and hardwoods... cherry, birch, maple preferred... black locust(pseudoacacia) makes excellent wood for these stoves, as well as hawthorn (cratagus spp.) they burn a long time with a lot of heat.. also the black locust will burn green... not ideal, but paired with dry wood, burns just fine...

More and more I am finding that while 1 Tigris started out with some decent products that most of the new stuff is nowhere near what it used to be. Many problems and not thought out designs are what it seems todays One Tigris is turning out to be. I have not purchased anything from them recently and do not think I will as there are many other option for far less money that work evry bit as good and for price point can be replaced multiple times before I hit 50 bucks. Great Video Luke and would seriously be a buyer of a product line of Outdoor Gear that you produced. I really do think you would give the industry a serious run for their money.

A interesting stove! I like triangular designs, but for some reason designers don't take into account that solo campers won't necessarily be using large pots on them. I have the stainless model of the Clikstand stove and the pot supports are made into the sides. A Toaks or similoar 750 won't fit on those and would have to sit directly on the trangia burner, So I drew up a simple design for them that is actually about the same as on the One Tigris stove, but will allow small pots to sit on my clikstand.

In my humble opinion if you spend fifty bucks on a twig burner from a company that is supposed to be outdoors and camping centric. It should be well thought out and have no need of a Dremel tool to make it right. It should come with a convenient feeding port and an assortment of slots on the top to accommodate different sized cookware. I tend to agree with one of the other commenters, you should come out with your own line of products, to fill al the holes in quality and deficiencies found in all the other product lines on the market. You would be filthy rich and the rest of us wouldn't keep wasting money on lesser products. As usual great and thorough review.

I think a feed port cut out of the edge would work good. Like a couple triangle cuts on 2 of the edges of the walls. The air holes would stay intact. Another modification that might bring this up a notch is the the top having some sort of plate that directs the flames toward the center to address the issue of leaking out the triangle points.

Hi, Luke. In addition to cutting a hole in one of the sides, I believe I would cut the notches for the three little tabs that make up the stove top surface deeper so that they are flush with the rest of the stove. It will proved better stability for the larger pots, as well as making it easier to rest your smaller items (like your 750ml cup) on one of the three corners. Just my two cents. Thanks for another great review!

I got a "Lixada" stove on Amazon. The stainless one is only $13. It doesn't have the silly lack of a hole to feed the wood in that this one you tried does. It is small enough for the Stanley 2 cup pot, or you can use larger ones on it too. It is possible to use with alcohol because it has a bowl along with a plate, and you can use fuel tabs as well and have them closer to the pot than you would want with wood. They even have a titanium one for $19. It folds down smaller than the one you tried too, about 4"x4" in the bag, but still flat.

I had the same réaction when I Saw the lack of feeding port... Get the dremel and the cutting disk and make a cut on a side panel to feed it with wood while it burns. For the top, I guess a grid could be added to act as a BBQ and wire steel tent pegs could be used as supports for the pot. A few holes or notches on the top and that's all that'd be needed for that. It's a pity through that whoever designed it at One Tigris could not see the benefits of simple ideas. That being said I have to admit I like the form factor (especially when packed), the size and the look of that stove.
@stewartrv
@stewartrv Рік тому
I think you should use it as an upside down fire. Try filling it and packing with bigger pieces and pack them in vertically leaving a small gap for the pot stands. Then light the fire on the top and let get a little bit established before you you the pot stands on. When I've done it this way on a similar (but square) stove I could cook on it for 30-40 mins without feeding the fire at all...

OneTigris just seems to produce cheaper alternatives on competitor designs. Just depends on if the savings are worth it. For this wood stove it isn't as versatile as the firebox I saved up a few months to pick up the titanium version which is like 3X more expensive than this. This is cheaper but also less versatile than some competitive brands. I also like to do more than just boil water so a more versatile light stove was worth it to me.

I use the Ti Emberlit stove. It’s perfect for the 750ml pots and my coffee maker. That thing looks like it would be better for group cooking.

Thanks for the review, appreciate all you do and test for us. This looks like a bad knockoff of the Firebox stove products that have been out for a number of years.

Being a bit of a tinkerer, I'd cut a feed port in one side and poke some holes in that bottom plate.

I like your idea about the Dremel, but I'd cut notches in 2 panels at one of the points where the 2 adjacent panels touch, maybe 2 inches deep from just below the upper tab till just above the lower tab. That would form a very substantial feeding port without affecting the overall integrity of the panels. Also, bending a slight "V" into the pot supports would solve the problem of the opening being too large.

There's also no way for the ash to drop out, so the longer you keep this running the more buildup you'll have...and no way to remove it aside from removing a panel.

Could add a grate to top for a smaller size containers. Would be great to see you Dremel it. It’s unfortunate somebody would pay 50 bucks then have to intentionally put holes in it. I like the simplicity of the Swiss M 71

How would the performance be with a Trangia type burner in it instead of wood? Thank you for keeping it honest.

That's a product similiar to the Bushbox from Germany, which comes in various sizes and is available in stainless steel as well as titanium. Although the Bushbox is much better thought through, it seems. I would recommend the Bushbox over this product without any second thought. When it comes to "drill a hole into the side to create a feeding hole" - this just states that the product is not designed properly and fails in the category "useability". Well, that is just my opinion, but there are other stoves that are much better, when it comes to design and functionality.
