The real mystery to me : why would an aspiring journalist NEVER do any research to a company that she intents to apply ?

Honestly a part that they fucked up on is that her boyfriend is a chef. A NY chef. He would be working three times as much as Andy. I'm a professional chef. We work like 70 hours a week. He wouldn't have time to miss her.

When her bf and friends started playing with her phone while Miranda is calling and she gets mad, everyone is like "Jeez, what a stuck-up". I was soooo pissed!! They sucked!

She did not refuse to eat the sandwich because of calorie concerns. She didn't eat the sandwich because she was so exhausted and frustrated by her job that she lost her appetite. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Um Nigel had been styling her the entire time until she picked out something herself. He was still styling her up until Paris. As we can see by the end of the movie she went back to a similar version of her previous style when it was all left up to her. I'm gonna need yall to get this right before you make up an entire list of the movie and nearly get everything wrong. 🙄

The problem I always had was that her friends, as mentioned, were happy to take all the 'gifts' she gave them, but then bitched and complained because she actually started to take the job seriously. The boyfriend wasn't particularly supportive either. However, Nigel is right when he says she wasn't even remotely trying when she started, and was whining instead of committing to the job. She couldn't win.

I don't think anyone took the Harry Potter thing as realistic lol

I know it’s a small detail, but I loved the part where - after weeks or months of barely eating anything for Fashion week - Emily just grabs the chocolate pudding and roll, stuffing her face while berating Andy saying Andy didn’t deserve designer clothes because “You eat CARBS, for Christ’s sake!!” 😂

I stopped watching after the first entry. They do explain why Miranda hired Andy. Andy’s little speech about her work ethic struck a chord with Miranda. Also, none of Emily’s previous hires had worked so Miranda was giving the “smart, fat girl” a chance. At the end of the movie, Miranda states that Andy reminds Miranda of herself. Have you actually watched the movie??

I think it’s strange the heroine’s seen as betraying her coworker by going to Paris when the former is hospitalized. Is she supposed to give up her job because a coworker’s hit by a car?

Andys biggest mistakes was still loving that selfish boyfriend who whines for his birthday. And those senseless, selfish bunch of friends.

Answer to second question: Nigel is dressing her all along just like the first outfit. That's how she's getting all those gorgeous clothes. We learn that in Paris when he complements her outfit and says: "Did you put this together yourself?" And when she says yes. He says: "My work here is done."

Meryl Streep's character was everything! Loved her to pieces! This is a great movie to sit down and enjoy!

There's a deleted scene which you can find here on UKposts. It explains why Andy so unprepared for the interview and didn't even know who Miranda was. The reason is because she was placed on runway through an agency that same day.

You'd think the internship was for a decade and not only a year the way her friends and bf reacted.

At the end nate was all like ‘we have nothing in common anymore because you’re into fashion now’ , as if all he ever liked about her were her ugly sweaters

She was hired because Nigel said "who is that sad little person, are we doing a before and after piece I don't know about?" Miranda wasn't going to hire her at all until that point - she shoos her out with "that's all", and then as Andi is leaving the building Emily comes for her - right after Nigel said his line. the point being that Fashion can and does change anything and anyone, it has a profound effect despite some people saying it's irrelevant and they're not that into fashion. That's why at the end of the movie when Andi has gone back to her former self, Miranda let's out the little smirk and chuckle as she is watching Andi walking down the street back as her former self. It's the entire base of the movie - the DEVIL wears Prada.

she went back to her style at the end but she deff looked better, this job truly updated her style all the way down to the hair. Hence why at the end Miranda smiled after seeing her fix her toupet while she was walking, it was a moment where Miranda realized her/the company’s impact on her

About the"instant Fashionista " Andy does Say when about to celebrate with nigel in Paris that the outfit she is wearing for her date is something she pulled for herself that means that all outfits she has used so far are hand piced for her by someone else i can only assume that Nigel is behind her clothes up to that point in the movie.

Also: what irked me in this movie is when the girl just aassume Andy Is hooking up with that one dude when they don’t give her a chance to speak. She claims to know Andy, yet doesn’t let her give her side? Sheesh.

Miranda hired Andy because she's different from all the other girls. In a way, she saw the same ambition and will she has herself in Andy. And this proved to be true, because when Andy really worked hard, she was the best assistant Miranda had. She transformed herself and was able to go from super dull and lost to a stylish woman because she set this goal to herself. And this leads to the second point. It wasn't Nigel's help with the clothes, but what he said before that: Andy wasn't really trying. She was all the time fighting and sabotaging herself with her preconceptions about fashion and fashion magazines. It's when she sees that fashion is something more for some people, when she sees that it's a passion, an art, that she commits to be part of that world. She stops fighting.

Emily Blunt was amazing! One of the best book-to-screen character actors I have ever seen! I became a huge fan of hers after this film, and I’ll watch anything with her in it. She’s a true talent.

Andy pretends in the end she's not like Miranda, but leaving her stranded and tossing her phone proves she is exactly like Miranda in every way.

Imagine having unsupportive friends to your job and most of all, they know what spot she is in. I can't imagine having those friends. Now Nate, don't get me started on him.

Miranda explained in the interview why she hired Andy. She said it’s because she always hires the same type of girl and the usually don’t work out for long. She thought Andy would do a better job because she was different.

They explain why Andy was hired in the deleted scenes, she was not even expecting to go to an interview with Miranda, she was just sent there by hr without short notice, that is why she wasn't prepared.

Its revealed that nigel continues to dress andy up until the end in paris nigel is surprised that andy could put together a beautiful outfit.

I think the reason Miranda hires Andy instead of any other girl who would “kill to have this job” is because she didn’t know anything about fashion. She was like a blank canvas and Miranda could teach her HER ways of doing things whereas hiring someone with fashion experience, their own view of how things should be in the fashion world may conflict with Miranda’s.. idk maybe I’m thinking too deep into it lmao

Nate was not right. Didn't think so then and especially don't now. I remember at the time being confused by so many facets of the film. Like the message it was trying to push was counterintuitive. I thought Andy discovered more about herself and what she could do while at Runway. And her transformation was a good thing. She took her work more seriously. She grew to respect the industry and the pressure involved. Whether that's fashion or any other field, that's a good lesson to learn and carry forward. And, it's always great to look your best. It gives you more confidence. More swagger. She worked at a place where she could dress spectacularly and not cost her much. Of course, she should take advantage of that. Oh, and her going to Paris instead of Emily? Why was Emily all of a sudden so, "you sold your soul for fashion"?!!! Bitch, what?!!! It's understandable that Emily is upset that she can't go to Paris, but she had to know that was going to be the case holed up in the hospital and of course, Andy would be the one to go in her stead. But, they try to sell it like this great moral dilemma. It was a script-manufactured conflict. Not actual conflict. LOVE this movie, but for reasons the filmmakers did not intend.

Just to point out another thing. The Harry Potter Manuscript doesn't need to come from a book... it's a file on a computer. My best friend and I actually read it 1.5 weeks before it was released. It was a Notepad file and it didn't take much to find it. Don't worry, I still bought the book when it came out to make up for that piracy action, but hey, I also couldn't wait XD

This reflects the real american life: ZERO real friends, nepotism, conflict of interests, veneers, the bank of mom and dad for all the kids with cool jobs and nice flats.

I had a boss whose standards where so high that Senior Associates always asked for a transfer. I was the Associate that made coffee, ran errands, plus compiled the reports, even delivery of contracts and documents were given to me. My boss saw that I fixed everybody's reports and left at 8pm and I got in at 7am.That boss gave me that opportunity to assume Senior Associate responsibilities. He trained me for 3 years which was similar to bootcamp hell and wrote my recommendation letter to Stanford. Now all the Senior Associates report to me as I became the youngest partner in my firm. Hard work and a Tough boss who just wanted the highest quality consulting for the clients gave me a different perspective. Life? didn't have a life for 15 years. Life started when I quit before 40 to become an entrepreneur.

Regarding not knowing Miranda, Andy was applying for a different job in the building (deleted scene)

Andy didn’t learn how to dress up like a stylish guru. Nigel tells her what to wear every day. In Paris, he asks her “who dressed you up like that” and says he had taught her everything. It took months of her being told what to wear every morning to actually learn how to do it by herself.

Yeah, throwing that steak out was the most distressing and puzzling scene in the movie.

How did Andy and Nate afford their NYC apartment. ..Answer NYC tenant and rent control and succession laws. This is the same way the series Friends explained how they afforded an even swankier apartment.

Another fact: Meryl Streep had said this was the first and last time she did method acting. She stayed in her trailer when she wasn’t filming and while the other cast members were hanging out. She wanted to keep her performance as authentic as possible. Only, she said it felt lonely more than anything.

The first question is actually answered in one of the arguments that Andy and Miranda had in the middle of the movie talking about how Andy was only hired because Miranda believed in her being an underdog.

The answers to all these questions is "ITS A DAMN MOVIE"

Wasn't Nate a chef/cook? Cooks work LONG hours. How can be possibly be mad at Andy for working late when he should be at work til 2am?!

When Andy threw her phone and left Miranda without courtesy, that sealed the deal. Miranda won. She successfully turned Andy into her clone.

Regarding the first scene, Miranda tells us she took a CHANCE on "the smart, fat girl." Perhaps she saw herself in Andy when she was young. Miranda even states this at the end of the movie when they're in Paris.

nigel styled andy throughout her entire time dressing the part besides at the very end, theres even a scene where he asks who picked out her outfit and she says she put it together herself and he says “my work here is done”

The fact that Miranda hired her speaks to the fact she saw something different in Andy. She saw some potential in her being an outsider to the fashion world.

This is a weird video but just so happens I have watched this movie about 50 times . . just really like it . . and maybe because watching so it so much I have started to pick it apart . . for example why would anyone eat an onion bagel before a job interview . . lol and if you are an aspiring journalist seems you would research the company you are interviewing with and be on top of your game . .obviously I need to get a real life in 2020 considering I'm still awake and writing this comment . . lol

I can’t be the only one who got sad that emily starved herself and while in the hospital, hogged her food. People should stop framing beauty as being thin or wearing the skimpiest dresses.

If you had listened to what Andy's father told her, you would understand why Nate and her friends are not exactly supportive of her job and its consequences: Andy doesn't like Runway, is not interested in pursuing a career related to fashion, doesn't fit in the industry standards, must be available for ridiculous requests, the pay is terrible, the hours are insane and all she does is try to avoid being chewed out by Miranda for every little mistake she could make. It was only a year, but Andy became miserable very soon and it affected her relationships. Even her new boss noted that her choice to work at Runway didn't make any sense if she wanted to become a serious journalist.

The printed copy of the book was heavily guarded. The script before printing could have been copied by an employee

Miranda isn't just a fashion icon. She has an in with anyone in the writing industry. Be it photography, writing/journalism, editors, modeling, etc. She's a force and it's shown when she states that she has a list of prominent people in the journalism and fashion industry who would walk if she left runway.

There is a moment at the end of the ball scene where Andy has just helped Miranda remember the names of the guests. This part was not included in the film: Miranda quietly says thank you over her shoulder.

I payed attention to all of the things you've mentioned in this commentary. I also pondered exactly HOW did Andy and Nigel have time to put all of those fabulous outfits together moreover, how was there time for that complete and total makeover? We're talking hair AND makeup and all before she returned to her desk which she was told by Emily that she must remain chained to. Never the less, one of my most favorite movies.😎

Hello, dear commentator. Thank you for underscoring and offering such a profound analysis of all the key turning points that manoeuvre the plot. It makes one wish they had perceived things as deeply as you do on the very first occasion one watched this film.

I think the two first things ARE answered in the movie. Miranda, when doing the monologue "destroying" Andy about the flight she couldn't get, explains hiring Andy as a leap of risk in trying something new. If she is a legend, she always take risks. And about Andy's looks, a little line at the end gives us a hint that all her looks where put together by Nigel except the one she dresses to meet Christian (which is the one Nigel praises her for putting together alone. "My work here is done", he says.)

Another question.. When Emily gets hit by a car & ends up in hospital all the trees are green & in bloom, it's obviously spring/summer. Yet at the same time Paris looks grey, wintery & covered with lights that makes you think it's getting ready for Christmas.

Yes, lots of romantic movies have these totally unrealistic situations. Like Nate can’t give her the job for a year. Selfish

When I first watched that movie, back in 2006, my sister and I talked about most of those things. We thought she was lucky to get the job, and that Nate and her friends should have been more supportive. It could have been her big break.

actually the total earlier indiference and self-reliance on Andy at the job interview and meeting Miranda is what make her to choose Andy - she somehow sees the whole potential inside Andy that she didn't knew either before, and all of her is a blank page so PERFECT FOR EXPERIMENTATION. Miranda took a chance for shaping-on Andy at her own self traits, and IT WORKED, she is totally right at the very end that Andy could have choose to left the work anytime BEFORE, but she CHOOSED to keep being there and stay, because after all, innerly SHE LIKED IT!! However when that moment on claiming victory over Andy, telling the whole true, was the breaking point when Andy on her new self improvements CHOOSED then to break-up and made her own way freely. Miranda was first quite shocked, but later on SHE IS HAPPY because not only she improved Andy's own self, but that actually she made a choice that she thought none could have ever done, as she, or Emily, didn't made it on time, while Andy did, and she was quite happy, because SOME HOPE in the world came to her. (Miranda actually was and is deeply broken innerly, but you could see that sometimes she wants someone could make her prove being wrong about something, and Andy DID IT. That makes something good for Miranda, though she keeps it hidden from everyone else to notice, as on her work she can't allow herself being softer, but she is actually very glad about that happening!1)

This video starts out pondering why Andy got hired; but, Miranda addresses that near the end of the movie. To paraphrase, she said she hired "the smart, fat girl" b/c everyone else was the same & no one else fulfilled her unrealistically high expectations. She hired Andy b/c Andy was different. She wanted someone who had the mental potential to think/act on her level. 'Is a new wardrobe really all it takes?' Well...no. She also got her hair done & got a makeup/eyelash tutorial--something Emily & Serena were laughing over when Andy walked in. As for the rest, Andy is *smart*--something that was mentioned both in her being a journalism major & in her ability to memorize all the minutiae that eventually made her Miranda's "biggest disappointment." Part of being really smart is being able to learn what interests you. Question about Christian: Welcome to rom-coms &, incidentally, a lot of real-life situations. He's hot & she's fan-girling. Ergo... Nate: Unfortunately, that's a lot of relationships too. It's not right; but, it is realistic--except for the part where he's a chef & still has lots of time off. Andy & Nate having a nice apartment: Welcome to Hollywood movies. It's never explained. It's just expected that the main characters will live in nice homes & live decent lives, unless they're supposed to represent poverty. Then, they'll usually still have a decent home. It will just be less nice. Andy's friends: Massive jerks; but, unfortunately, that's also realistic for some friends... Harry Potter book: It's a fictional movie. Not everything is meant to be 100% realistic; but, it is reasonable to expect that industry connections would exist that would allow people to do things that can't normally be done. In this case, it's not about getting an actual copy of the book. Rather, the person who did the cover art could have gotten a copy of the manuscript from someone on the editing team, & had it printed off & bound by a friend in Binding. Miranda's lunch: That was annoying; but, again, it's a Hollywood movie. Food is always being wasted in movies. Crossing streets w/o looking: I'm going to file that under "stupid things done in movies," right alongside characters driving on allegedly busy roads, while regularly spending several seconds at a time, looking at their passenger. I would hate to be in a car or on a road with them driving. The burned grilled cheese sandwich: People like their food cooked to different levels of doneness &, while a full pound of Jarlsberg might have cost $17 from whichever store, he could have bought a much smaller amount at a higher price. It's also possible that he didn't buy it & got it from his job b/c it didn't get properly rotated & reached it's date. Thus, he wouldn't know the actual price; but, he would know that it's expensive. Andy's complaints/lack of understanding: And we're back to the beginning of the movie. She didn't expect anything, b/c she knew little/nothing about the fashion industry before getting hired. She wants to be a journalist. So, these things not being a secret (to people in the industry & its fans) does not mean that it's as widely known/appreciated by everyone else. Fashion dieting: Very disturbing; but, it's meant to be. Pre-job researching: She definitely should have; but, how many people over the years have interviewed for jobs w/o doing any research? A lot... Likewise, maybe she got through journalism school w/o being aware of Miranda Priestly, simply by her not being part of the curriculum & Andy not choosing Runway for any of her writing assignments. Yes, she read all of Christian's essays for her college newspaper & you would think at least one of them would have mentioned Miranda Priestly, but maybe not. What I still to this day can’t understand is why Miranda was mad at Andy for her inability to book a flight during a hurricane... like I don’t understand, planes can’t fly during hurricanes! lmao.

I love this movie, but I was so happy and relieved at the end when Andy chucks it all and reverts to her original, genuine self, and gives Emily all of her Paris fashions.

This is an amazing screenplay and writer director are on point. The conflict makes total sense to me. I love this film as it is.

A small two bedroom condo less than a block from Rockefeller Center fully furnished in purple costing just under 120k was an undergraduate college pad for me in the early 1980s. That pad now is priced well past 2 million. Therefore, Anne's place is either rent controlled to lower the rent or financed in some other way besides the salaries of the couple.

"Things Everyone Ignores In The Devil Wears Prada"....everyone? really? I think we all watched the movie with comprehension. This is like a rant on the movie because it irked the creator of this video. Regarding the Jarlsberg...that price is accurate because the price of food in Manhattan is way higher due to high rents. inserting footage of a 20lb wheel of Jarlsberg is misleading to your viewers. Which is odd because you addressed a high rent, so that obviously effects the price of food too! I swear this content creator has such skewed logic. Irked me getting through this.

Well, you know, you have a lot of good questions to this movie. So cool! As for me, I watched it only once years ago, and I don't want to do it again, because I remember that after watching it I had that feeling of deja vu, too many reminders of my work at that time as a secretary of a Deputy Director-General of a company ... Oh dear! Besides the normal duties of a secretary, I had to do that kind of absurd like finding a song that my boss had heard on the radio in the car on his way to work as he liked it and wanted it as a ringtone for his phone. "You know, it goes like NA-NA-NA, something like that. Find it!" WHAT??? Yeah, he just hummed a couple of notes of that song, that was it. And you know what? I found it!

The problem with the 'blue jumper' monologue is that it only tells you how fashion works, it doesn't say why fashion works, or why we should care what colour blue is blue.

Andy may have been a sell-out, but I have never seen a "chef" sitting around the house as much as Nate does - especially if he supposedly owns the restaurant.

I hate how her boyfriend was though. Rest of the movie was cool.

Nate more so got irritated with her, because Andy would still try to down the job while becoming the people she claimed to hate so much. When he said “I wouldn’t care if you were out pole dancing every night, just do it with some integrity” he didn’t care what she was doing, but wanted her to stop whining to him about how terrible the job was all while becoming an awful human.
