Whether it's asking them to lip read what someone's saying across a room or only showing an interest in how to sign swear words, here are some of the things not to say to a deaf person.

I keep the subtitles on and I'm not hard of hearing, but modern TV is notorious for having really quiet dialogue and huge explosions within seconds of each other which is jarring for any ear. Accents are also difficult for me, especially if someone is speaking quickly.

There's also a big mistake in the subtitles/captions/whatever you call them UKposts provides. Suddenly at about a minute in the video, all subtitles from UKposts from the beginning re-appeared, but now over the burned in captions from the video itself. Pity.

Autistic, and learning ASL has really helped me when I have trouble speaking. Sometimes I shut down and it's hard to speak, but using ASL not only helps me communicate, but can act as a form of stimming because it's giving my hands something to do so I'm not so overwhelmed.

@weeardguy

@@iluvzurara2 Oh no, it happens in the Netherlands as well, trust me. I have been to friends were I would watch some movie and quickly someone would start complaining about the subtitles... But especially when characters in a movie or serie mention a brand, store or locally known commercial-slogan or whatever, you can get lost easily. I got the dvd-boxset of Friends. Well, for me, as a Dutch guy, there are so many references to local commercials, brands, stores and what not that it's hard to follow along, thus subtitles are always on. Well, sometimes it is hard for some people to be deaf. I like my life as is but yes, it’s harder to be deaf in one ear. Sometimes I’m a bit just like “Why did I have to be deaf in only one ear? Can’t I just be either deaf in both ears or not deaf at all?!” But I live my life as is, being partially deaf. Some people think I’m lying as I go to a hearing school and don’t use hearing aids tho, it’s hard only depending on my left ear.

I'd love the chance to take a sign language class again. It was one of the most important languages to me because I grew up meeting a lot of deaf children and wanted so badly to be able to talk to them. I was able to take it for 2 years when I first entered high school, but wasn't able to keep learning in that environment when I moved.
@weeardguy
@weeardguy 3 роки тому
When I was in primary school there were 2 children (brother and sister, the sister being the oldest) who both could hear, but needed hearing-aides to be able to understand what people said. (this part is for everyone under 30, you have no idea how technology has advanced) His devices incorporated possibilities for the now so common loop facilities but on a very small scale. In the daily 'circle-talk' in class (maybe that's something Dutch, I don't know), the person speaking had to be wearing a heavy box with lavalier mic, which would radio the sound to him, while he was wearing a similar box but then without the mic but the cord that held the box around your neck facilitating a loop so his aides could pick up the radio and he could hear what the person speaking was saying. It was only a few years ago I realised deaf people probably don't take much joy in most videos as there are no subtitles and explanations of things going on in the video. Since then I just provide subtitles in two languages (Dutch, my native language, and English) The same I'm still looking for a way to provide audio-transcription...

And GAYDAR means gay-radar. It's like being able to tell if someone is attracted to their same sex. Jessica is gay (or bi/pan I dunno, she's married to a woman though) So she's saying that she has an excellent gaydar.

One thing that always amazes me with deaf people is when they can articulate really good. It takes real dedication and hard practice to articulate without hearing the sounds coming out of your mouth. It's different for people who became deaf later in life (I think) but for people who were born deaf and are able to talk are the people I look up to. Always challenging themselves and succeeding in what they do, I could never...

Do you really need the subtitles my husband asked me when we first got together. He doesn't question me now. Could never afford hearing aids. I hate when subtitles don't match what the person saying. Never was able to learn sign language growing up poor. I've scooted by, self taught to read lips using key sounds that I can hear to distinguish what was said. I'd say it worked out so far. I'm 32 and on a waiting list for hearing aids for the first time. I still can't imagine what it would be like to hear someone and have a normal conversation.

The thing I hate the most is when someone finds out you're deaf and puts on that hateful compassionate face and says something like "Oh, I'm very sorry, I didn't knew that, you're so intelligent that you don't seem deaf!". Once I was in class and I got distracted for a second, so I asked my teacher to repeat the thing she had just said. And she rudely asked "Are you deaf?". She had said that multiple times to almost everyone in the class. I was so annoyed by that that I answered :"Yes, I am!". When she understood that I wasn't joking, that compassionate face came out and she suddenly was super sorry and started apologizing and talking to me like I was someone who had to be pitied by everyone. Sorry for my English, it's not my native language

I know bubble and whatever in ASL because my friend has Aspergers and gets so overwhelmed sometimes she can’t talk or I get so overwhelmed from my emotions that I can’t (cptsd) but we sign each other back and forth when it gets that bad. The main ones I know are because those are our “leave me alone” words. Like when we need space. It’s the line in the sand and they are easy enough to sign that it doesn’t take a lot of energy to do them.

I'm so glad they mentioned lip reading. I am not deaf but I am hard of hearing. I hear enough to get by with hearing aids and sometimes I don't wear them because I don't really like them 😅 but what I hate is when that one friend stops using voice and just mouths words like "do you know what I'm saying" and I'm like wtf bro why you gotta demean me like that. Lip reading doesn't work that way. Lip reading is guessing at best like the said in the video. For me, what I can hear + lip reading = about 70% understanding of what someone is saying. It really depends though, if you speak very clear with a higher pitched voice (volume doesn't have to extra just talk "normally") I can understand 99% if you have a lower voice or mumble I am gonna understand 50% or less because lip reading isn't perfect! Also the pitch things is just a me thing because that's where my hearing loss is. It's different for everyone so don't assume it's the same for others as it is for another person.

I try to be friendly and open to everyone I meet. And I don't mind subtitles in films, I don't know why it bothers people so much, probably because I'm used to watching more foreign films so I'm used to them.

I know that, but they can't hear themselves. Is it like, they just need a lot of practise to talk "normally"?

I am partially deaf and cannot stand the 'You should have listened then' or the 'listen more'. It's so frustrating! Also when someone says something and you ask them to repeat it and they say 'it wasn't important'. Then I never find out what they wanted to say and the CURIOSITY EATS ME ALIVE.

Oh my god! All this time, it's just been a phase?! Thank you, For Hinguerez, for enlightening me! I wish you'd told me sooner though. It would have saved all the trouble of going to constant audiology appointments since the age of 3 and having doctors shove weird telescopes down my ear. If I'd known my half-deafness was only temporary then maybe I could have skipped that operation I had 4 years ago when they drugged me and put grommets in my ear. Oh if only I'd known! Smh.

Also partially deaf and this is the bane of my existence! You could have used the time you were wasting to say "it wasn't important" to just repeat yourself. x.x

Ugh I'm the same as you I have hearing aids and I absolutely hate when people find out I'm hearing impaired and they whisper 'can you hear me' repeatedly getting quieter or covering their mouth and asking me. It's not like people would go up to a blind person how many fingers am I holding up. People are just so stupid smh

I'm not deaf or hard of hearing, but I do have an auditory processing problem, so subtitles help me immensely. I'm learning ASL, however. I occasionally run into people in my work who are deaf or hard of hearing who know sign, and I want to be able to make them feel as welcome as anyone who is hearing. I am very self conscious about my signing, though. I'm very slow and sometimes have to stop to think of the correct sign or where the sign should go in my sentence grammatically. I am also slow at stringing together the words (or spelled words) people sign to me, and I frequently have to ask them to repeat themselves or sign slower for me. I'm worried my struggling through the communication while I'm still so new is more frustrating and cumbersome than inclusive or welcomming to my guests than just writing things down or letting them read my lips instead. Is it impolite for me to do this until I'm more skilled at ASL? And if I make mistakes, is it okay to ask for people to correct me?
