Grey's are not noisy birds. They talk to communicate only. I am 61 and older adults have the time to give the time and attention they deserve and need. Rescues are available and if it's a younger bird will need a plan for someone to inherent the bird. They are wonderful but only rescue

Not all Greys are “talkers” so if you just want a talking bird you have to get one that’s already talking. I have 2 that needed a new home. Both birds are sweet but can be sassy. One talks up a storm but is afraid of strangers. The other hoots like an owl and has to be around people. Each bird is an individual. Both of them are really smart - they watch constantly & learn both good & bad behaviors. They’ve trained my spouse really well. There are days I really appreciate the quiet bird.

My son and his wife lived in my basement apartment. They had several parrots. Boney, the African Grey was one of them. While waiting for my laundry l made myself comfortable on a chair in the bird room and started reading a book. All of a sudden my son says in an accusing voice, "Why aren't you working?" I turned around to defend myself and saw no one. Then Boney said, "Well?" He said it in my son's voice. I couldn't stop laughing.

I think it's more common with dedicated owners of long-lived pets like parrots and turtles, since the potential for those pets to outlive their owners is commonly recognised. when people have pets with a 15 year life expectancy, it's common for them to not consider the possibility of dying that soon, but when you have a pet projected to live another 50-100 years, then the pet outliving you is an easy possibility for people to accept without being tied to accepting that they may die soon, which is a realisation most people try to avoid.

I have an Eclectus parrot, and he's amazing. Almost as smart as an African Grey, my boy (Kelvin) talks up a storm. He knows the context of words, and will try new things if she doesn't get what she wants. She imitates my voice so closely that my husband will think it's me talking. And we got him when he was little (he's 12 now), and I had a cough. He still coughs when I do, and will hiccups along with me. He's snugly, affectionate, and never bites. He lets me know what he's thinking, and will gently move my finger off his back if he doesn't want to be petted. I'd be lost without my boy. And he's plucked a lot, too. But you can't stop loving them.

@@LillianMNowak I wish I had time to tell the entire story of the old missionary named "Art." He went on a trip back to the States and left his Gray with bird sitters. The young couple wanted to surprise Art, so they tried and tried to get the silent bird to say, "Hello Art!" But it was too stubborn. In his frustration, the husband yelled, "You old fart!," at the bird and THAT was the phrase the bird found interesting. So, for the remaining days, the couple were trying desperately to get the bird to stop yelling, "You old fart!" Art returned and the couple were terrified as they waited for the dreadful moment they knew was coming. Art entered the room where his beloved bird was, and as expected, it yelled, "You old fart!" Luckily, Art was hard of hearing, so he smiled, turned to the couple and said, "He said my name!" They never told Art that they had accidentally taught his bird to tell him to shut up and insult him!🤣

Animals may not be able to talk, but they understand danger, empathy, love, loyalty, family, protecting, forgiveness, etc. Things we do not grasp all the time and should have down pat. They also grasp a lot more than people either pay attention to or refuse to address. I've met dozens of intelligent animals in my life, and I never found any animal to be "mindless". My friend called this person up (he's a friend of hers) & told him "Hey a-hole, my new puppy was up to no good and ripping something apart while I was asleep, and my 7yr old Doberman woke me up (she never wakes her) because she saw what he was up to...lead me to him and looked at him and back to me because she wanted me to know!" Yeah, my first interaction with parrots was similar, as a plumber one of my clients had a really friendly amazon parrot, and she would play hide and seek with me, ask what I'm doing, what that does, what this does, it felt exactly like speaking to my then 4 year old son. They deserve all the respect of a human.

I was mom to an African Grey for 12 years. I loved her dearly. Her name is Cosy. She was a delight and a comedian! And talked a blue streak. There was no electronic sound she couldn’t replicate. Unfortunately, my husband developed asthma and the dander just made him increasingly worse. Giving her up tore my heart in two. But my avian veterinarian offered to take her . She takes her to work Monday through Friday and home again at night. I miss her so much but Cosy has adapted well to her surroundings. I used to go and visit her but each time she thought I was her to take her home. And that was too hard to handle for both of us. So now I just get updates and photos. Happy to know how much you love you pr Grey ♥️

I too have a grey, and was told 22 years ago that, "They are great mimics." However Riley will literally ask and answer questions, and she changes pronouns and USES language. Example: I have come up to her cage and asked her, "Do you want to come out?" She now asks me, "Can I come out?" or states, "I'm hungry" I promise I have never asked her if 'I' could come out, or told here that 'I' was hungry. I was teaching 2 year old Sunday school when she first came to live with us and I imagined teaching HER all the little songs I taught my kiddos. I would sing little phrases to her every day, like: "I will sing unto the Lord" only to watch her stare at me, unmoved. After weeks of trying and thinking perhaps that's too much, I should break it down to smaller bits; one day as always I walked out and sang, "I will sing unto the Lord"... Riley said to me, "I got that part." I literally backed away from her cage. From that day forth I knew I would never teach her anything, SHE would be the one who taught me. She says what SHE wants, WHEN she wants to. But it is always great, and funny and clear. and I love her SO MUCH!
