Yours is from the good era before they started using wet timing belts and automatic gearboxes with dry clutches and friction plates instead of torque converters. My old manual 2001 Ford Mondeo was excellent and still drove fine when I recently traded it in. But they just don't make them like that anymore. Breaks my heart as the only 2 cars I'd ever had were both Fords. But where I live, the one modern Ford Mondeo that is reliable (the hybrid one) was the same price as a similar age and size Lexus, which just doesn't make any sense. And I hate SUVs, so their lineup is not really to my taste anymore.

I loved the electric power steering of my Mustang V-6 3.7. In fact the oil filter loved it too. The engineers positioned the filter right above the module. And every time I changed the filter, I had to place a piece of carboard over the module to protect it from a bath of hot oil. In a side note: I had an uncle who was a cheap skate. He bought a Chevy Vega back in the day with no power steering. And man, that thing gave me a workout when I drove it. I couldn't believe how many times I would have to turn that steering wheel for such a little car.

Hey Scotty I had a 2011 VW Tiguan AWD. At 77K the same thing happened while on the highway. After it sat for an hour, the power steering came back. At the dealer, they saw the codes, but they could not reproduce the issue. They quoted me over $4K to replace the rack/motor. I quickly sold it to another dealer. I'll never buy another vehicle with electronic power steering.

My son's 2016 F.usion power steering would quit when making a right turn. The dash gauges would flash and light up like a Christmas tree making the driver scared and almost lose control of the car. My former’04 GRAND MARQUIS was wonderful. The engine still ran like a Swiss watch at 205k. But it was rusting badly. Every GRAND MARQUIS and CROWN VICTORIA in that time frame had rust and peeling paint in exactly the same places. Lasted 17 years for me so it served well.

@@natas12rm Speak for yourself. IMO, Ford and Mercedes are the only companies to ever make a good transverse torque converter automatic. And the 10-speed in my Ranger is good enough that it's rarely noticeable. I'm on my 4th Ford, never had a single issue with an engine or transmission. The only major problems I had with the first 3 were corrosion related, which happens to anything after 10+ years in Ohio, haven't had any major issues with the 4th.

Ford went down the shitter the day they decided to kill the Crown Vic. I have a 2010 Crown Vic Police Interceptor, which means I literally have one of the last good Ford cars ever made (although it is body on frame, uses an F 100 frame and basically an F150 engine, axle and tranny, so you could consider it a truck with a sedan body)

Yeah with Volkswagen you have the same issue. All models that are petrol have separate steering control modules but for the TDi models you have to buy the entire steering rack which is £1500 or $1,604.45 US! Like your Ford there, the TDi has the module integrated into the rack which is ridiculous!

Not the worst car ever made unless you forgot the 1983 car of the year......drum roll please.....the Renault AMC alliance. I bought one for my youngest in the early 90s with the deal of I'll buy you a car and pay the insurance (as long as you keep a b average in high school) but I got to pick it. An alliance popped up locally with only 30k miles so I bought it. It usually ran every other week, was slow with no pickup and would intermittently start without fooling with it. The absolute disappointment in the boy's eyes when we picked it up one sunny November day still brings tears of laughter to my eyes many decades later. It was the perfect car for a 16yo male. He sold it to me a few years later after successfully trashing it for &100. I tweaked it, cleaned it up got it running and sold it for $500. I'm still very happy with that entire transaction. Sincerely The old Northwoods RN

Yes, it's cheaper to build in the long run. It is a stupid design that you have to replace the entire assembly. But I think the reason manufacturers do it is for fuel economy. Not running a pump 100% of the time.

I've had friends with electric P/S going bad and I carefully suggested that they simply remove the motor, cover up the open space and drive manually. Nope; they wanted it fixed, for $$$. Sometimes, a unit never really works and others never break. Typical for any mechanical device; toss of the dice. If I ever have a car with electric (groan) I'd pull out the electric motor, remove the gear if I could to eliminate the resistance of spinning a dead motor shaft and put the motor back in. (maybe?) Sure, with quick steering common compared to 4+ decades ago it would be harder at slow speeds, but I'd like to try it to see what it feels like, especially if it's going to cost so much to fix. Either that, or MAYBE find a working unit or parts in a junk yard. (stupid cars) I've driven non-power rack and pinion cars in the past and it's no problem. I'd like to visit these designers on Halloween. I'D show them a trick they wouldn't soon forget! (HEHEHEHEHE)

It's like the reason Citroen did that with their Servo Steer on the CX in the mid 70s, linked to road speed, suspension & brakes only difference was ( way ahead of its time) that it was hydropneumatic! Sorting that out isn't for the faint hearted!
