A central power plant uses energy much more efficiently than an internal combustion engine does, and it also has things like scrubbers which lower emissions further. Also, most of the US power grid uses natural gas which also burns cleaner than coal, for example (although still not perfect). So to put it simply, it's much cleaner to have one central power location that burns fuel much more efficiently than having thousands of mini power plants each producing pollution as they drive around. And before it's brought up, yes, the research has also shown that EVs are in fact still cleaner overall even when taking manufacturing and production into account.

One thing that sucks about today's EVs is they are relatively slow to charge; too slow for truly luxurious long distance travel. Around here the most common place I see big luxurious Bentley, Rolls-Royce, and Maybach cars (almost all 4 door sedans) is cruising at high speeds down our 4+ lane divided highways. It is close to a 500 mile, 7.5 hour drive, at the speed limit, between the two big cities they tend to travel between. I'm sure an EV Bentley, Rolls, or Maybach would make an awesome short distance daily driver (just like they do for us plebeians), but I don't believe they would be very good for those fast, long distance cruises. I notice Bentley has stated that by 2030 they will have an all electric line. I'm sure in a few years from now charging will be fast enough for high speed traveling Bentley EVs to make sense, but IMO not yet...

Super interesting, isn't it? It actually makes sense. Great software is expensive to develop, but free per unit. So it lends itself to large companies (lots of engineers) who produce at high volume, and then it's virtually free for them to use this software in as many of their cars as possible, even the cheap ones. on the other side, Bentley doesn't have the resources to hire a lot of engineers to develop customized navigation software (for example) for the few thousand cars they make per year, so they either have to use/buy lots of tech from high-volume companies or put out half-baked software. High volume manufacturing is a wonderful thing.

Back when we both were driving them daily (I still am) we compared our fuel economy numerous times. On the highway he got about 22mpg and hybrid version gets about 25mpg. It is better, but not that much. In rush hour stop and go traffic though, the difference is incredible; and the worse the traffic is, the bigger the difference. In reality bad rush hour traffic his V6 version often got as little as 10mpg according to his trip computer (confirmed using the gas pump). On those same days my hybrid would get as much as 47mpg (US gallons too). The worse the traffic and the slower the drive is, the more time my hybrid will spend with the engine off and the more time using the electric motors.

Bentleys may actually eventually switch to being full electric for sound and luxury reasons but I don't think the tech is there yet. The downsides of an electric vehicle is a huge risk for a coach design car company. Failing parts? It's probably not owned long enough for them to wear out. Charge time? Availability of Compatible Quick chargers? That seems like a risk when reputation and prestige is all that keeps people buying these things. Volkswagen Group will get there but I'm betting the coach built stuff will be the very last.

@GreatlatiusРік тому
I’m guessing that they don’t make it electric because it would need a super massive battery. 20 miles from an 18kWh battery is absurd… You would need a 270kWh battery to have a 300 mile range on that car. That’s almost 3 Model S or 4 Model 3 long range worth of batteries.
@BennnWJKРік тому
EVs tech still has a long way to go before it’s ready to replace fossil fuels…
@GreatlatiusРік тому
@@BennnWJK to replace them completely, sure… But most of the vehicles on the road could be perfectly replaced by current tech EVs. And for most people it would even be a better user experience. Also, I’m pretty sure there’s something very wrong with this particular car in the electric drivetrain. 1.1 mile per kWh is absurdly low. Even the Rivian R1T (with much worse aerodynamics and weight) does over 2 miles per kWh… And Hummer EV, which the least efficient EV on the market, is still 50% more efficient than the Bentley 🤔
@gigachad6162Рік тому
@@Greatlatius that’s probably the dumbest shit i’ve ever heard in my life. We don’t even have the electricity to charge all these dumb EVs and they’re not sustainable. Battery technology sucks. Forced compliance has never worked.
@RealityClubXРік тому
@@Greatlatius It really wouldn't. Imagine the disgusting waiting times for chargers, moreso than there already is 😂😂😂😂 You'll have to wait a day to charge your car at a charging station. Electric vehicles are not ready right now, they don't give enough range and chargers are slow and not readily available enough. It still has another 10 or so years to become a viable option.
@itechtalk03Рік тому

Come on Marcus a Tesla can't be compared to a Bentley. A Handcrafted car is a whole different ball game to one largely built by robots. The price of a Rolls and Bentley gets you exclusivity which someone who wants and can afford such a car usually wants. I agree it will be interesting to see what the 1st electric Bentley is like. I think Bentley and the VAG group will won't rush with Bentley being near the pinnacle of the VAG with Bugatti and Porsche. Plus I don't think the customers are necessarily in any rush to see the end of ICE till the bans on new ICE come in.

Honestly, I think the real solution in the future will be similar set ups like the karma revero GT. Cars will have an EV drivetrain and a battery but have a small engine that acts as a generator/range extender. Ik Mazda is exploring this type of solution with a small rotary engine/motor. This enables the manufacturer to use a smaller battery, making the whole process much more scalable and sustainable because they’ll be able to use less lithium/battery material (ie. the part of an EV that’s the most expensive) per unit/car. Gas tank sizes will be like 5-10 gallons. Just think ab it….
