2:34 This is actually a problem when it comes to designing games in general, where people severely underestimate how much they know of their own work, but there's a certain general idea that people tend to follow along the lines of "If it's just right for you, it's probably far too difficult"
@inverlock
@inverlock 12 днів тому
Sometimes that's a good thing though if you are fine focusing on a core audience. This happens more often with strategy, management, or mechanics focused games. Path of Exile is a good example as it is very successful, despite choosing not to reduce complexity. I think it's not a "problem" if it is an informed decision.
@GoddessLunaMoon
@GoddessLunaMoon 12 днів тому
@@inverlock The idea behind this is that as a designer you cant really ever know truly how difficult or intuitive something is, therefore it is never an informed decision. Path of exile is like that because they designed it with a specific niche in mind and when they gathered feedback from players/testers they decided that this is good for their specific audience. Ya gotta do that testing though, otherwise its just a guess.

Unironically, the green timer is a good thing. It can help the viewer of the video see how much time has passed since the last improvement, for example, if there is a cut in the video. Sometimes when looking at some streamers' videos who don't have a timer, it makes you think that the improvement on a very hard map happened in one or two tries, which might have taken them an hour or two. You can see that with the timer.
@daniellima4391

Ode to Green Timer Oh, green timer, steadfast in your vigil, Counting seconds with unwavering grace, In your hue, a verdant wave so regal, You mark the passage of time's fleeting race. Your numbers move like dancers in a grand ball, Ticking away the moments, swift and sure, A silent guardian, standing so tall, In your presence, we feel time's allure. Personified, you stand as a sentinel, Watching over us with tranquil repose, Guiding us through the hours, so gentle, In your glow, time's journey silently flows. 4:24 - _"What if you had a format where the slowest, uhhhh, players after ten checkpoints driven got knocked out? And then the slowest after twenty, and so on..."_ That'd actually be kind of neat... just basically some kind of mode where instead of simply catching checkpoints and reaching the end goal with the fastest time, you instead have a sort of tick-down timer to reach a particular checkpoint or goal section. Say you start with 45 seconds on the timer, and every specially marked checkpoint gate you pass gives you another 30 or something, and you just fail if you don't cross a major gate before the timer reaches zero.

Wirtual talks about how a competition with maps like this would be cool. I have seen Granady play comps like this where they would play new longer endurance maps (I think at least 5 minutes maps) specifically made for the comp so that they are sightreadable for the most part. This cup had the points format, where you gain more points the higher you finish and you play i think like 4 maps for all 1 round each. And then after doing this 4 times about a week apart each you have a winner Edit: just looked it up, it was called Turbo's endurance Race. A 5 step competition featuring 4 times 5+ minutes maps

I think a cool format for an endurance cup is to have a multi-map competition and each map is played only once with no warmup, then it's about making as few mistakes as possible surviving the map, and even if you mess up early you can still make it up over the course of say, 3 minutes of the map.

I like watching trials maps too when i wanna watch long maps, but there's something about maps like this (or to take it to the extreme, the 1 hour map with 750 checkpoints) thats just really fun to watch. Makes it a lot easier to see how good good players are. I can barely survive a 30 second map spamming the break button almost every turn, then you see discovery runs on longer maps like this and it looks cleaner than i can do when I've been hunting. So much fun.

A simple endurance format might be something along the lines of 2 warm up laps to learn a map followed by an infinite, or just a 100 laps, and anyone X amount of checkpoints behind the person in first place gets eliminated. To make things a bit spicier can also reduce X by 1 every lap with 1 checkpoint difference being the smallest. So if X starts at 10, after lap 1 X becomes 9 then 8 and so on until it reaches 1. Keeps tournament length fairly reasonable while being focused on endurance early on and shifting to risk and speed in the later laps.

One conceivable endurance tournament could be to eliminate a certain *portion* of the slowest players each round rather than a specific *number*. So, like, the slowest quarter, or slowest third of players get eliminated. And then when you get down to smaller player counts, you might eliminate the slowest half. That way the number of players dwindles exponentially instead of constantly. If you got rid of the slowest half of the players each round and started with 64 players, for example, it would only take a maximum of 6 rounds to eliminate everyone, since 2^6=64.

Speaking of updates to the COTD format, I had an idea for a multi-lap track where each lap was a round and at the end of each lap 4 trailing people got knocked out, then 2, then 1, until only one person was left standing. No brakes between rounds, just go go go!

I think a Knock-out competition with a map like this could be really cool. There’s a lot of time and a lot of tricks so it would feel more like a real race. Somebody falls behind early but then somebody crashes 1 minute in BUT even that person might not be out. There’s still several minutes of map to go! Kinda a cool format, and I dig how readable this is. Slowly playing through some of the older campaigns as this current campaign was the first time I ever picked up TM and my goodness.. some of the whacky maps have some awful readability to them for discovery purposes XD the only reason I survived some of these was literally because I’ve watched you do all the maps before.

Where one person would drive the first lap, then next person drives the next lap, and so on. That would be cool. Idea for an endurance map event format: Choose 3-5 maps with total author time of 20 minutes (e.g. four five minute maps). Drive each map three times. After each map (IE after every three runs) eliminate players based on the sum of their three runs (rather than their best single run), down to whatever number of participants you want for each round (e.g. for 100 players competing on four maps, eliminate 50 down to 50, then 30 down to 20, then 10 down to 10). The format would test consistency and the ability to drive for an hour without fatiguing.

I wonder what would happen if Wirtual slowly changed the colour of the timer until it was no longer green. How quickly will the addicts (like me) notice? Will they (we) be able to survive the rein of the red timer?

For endurance competitions, there could be a timer that eliminates a player in last place every 10-20ish seconds, so it becomes a bit more like a survival challenge

The vibe of this video is really strange due to the music staying consistent between cuts (as this as recorded offline)

Not that I play TM, but watching recently I was thinking about a format of 64 checkpoints, one round, slowest through each checkpoint goes out. Either slowest overall or per checkpoint (so if you're in the lead you can still go out if you crash).
