No kidding. That's one of the most annoying things about modern monitors. If you regularly have to switch back and forth between different presets because you use the same monitor for gaming and editing, it's so goddamn annoying to fiddle around with the unseen buttons.

My LG monitor drove me nuts, because there was no manual mode to stay on the DVI or HDMI, regardless what was plugged into the other port. For example, I was setting up mini pcs so I used empty HDMI port , but then the stupid monitor would immediately switch away when the mini pc would reboot, just EXACTLY the time when I needed it to stay on that screen because I was trying ot access BIOS. Of course the other issue is placing the buttons in hidden places, plus the completely illogical configuration options which button does what. Right now my current monitor has a little joystick, which I prefer over 4-5 buttons in a row.

@@Neanderthal75 I didn't even know that was a thing with monitors... I'm glad both the ones I'm using don't function that way. Not sure how they give priority, but user switching to an active input seems to retain the highest priority on mine.

I had (well technically still have) an AOC monitor which has an amazing samsung-designed panel, but the back-end and user controls are a fricken mess. It was kind of a mixed bag. Certainly useful for many people, but I wouldn't call it "good". It did hold up well. I kept hoping it would die so i'd have an excuse to replace it. But eventually I just replaced it without an excuse. I guess i have a spare backup screen now. I do visual work though, and I'm _very_ glad I finally replaced it. But I wouldn't call it a 'bad' monitor exactly.

10:34 Inverse ghosting (overdrive overshoot) still very much affects the _previous_ frame, but the pixel values are being overshot and instead of resetting, you get ghosting in the form of an _inverse image_ (a dark object leaves a bright afterimage).

Even in the Windows XP era, 85Hz was considered standard on even CRT monitors. In fact, a lot of businesses would ONLY buy monitors if they supported at least 85Hz refresh, as anything less than this has been shown to cause considerably more eye strain, although ideally you should aim for 120+ when possible. Edit: Oh! And the blue plug means it's not just VGA, but SVGA! With that, you can take full advantage of your 2MB Matrox GPU!

Screen tearing happens because the output buffer on the video output port of the PC is updated with a new frame while the current/old frame was being streamed to the display device. There is a very simple fix for this fun phenomenon, 2-buffer output. While 1 buffer is streamed to the monitor, all writing to the output buffer is sent to the other buffer. At the end of frame, the output switches to the 2nd buffer, putting all writes to the 1st buffer.

Response time is measured gray to gray because that's the worst case transition for an LCD panel. The crystals in an LCD rotate a bit whenever the panel needs to display a different shade. To get it to rotate more (like from white to black) they have to move more. However, to get them to do that, you need to apply higher voltage to the crystals. That makes them rotate faster! It turns out that the slowest transitions for an LCD aren't white to black, it's gray to gray, when difference between the starting and the end voltage is quite low and thus the pixels change more lazily. And that's why the panel speed for an LCD is measured for a certain gray to gray transition.

Thanks for the review and info about what is and isn't worth spending money on. Regarding adaptive Sync - as I understand (I may be wrong though) it's a version of sync technology that works with both G-Sync and Freesync, so the monitor should work fine with both AMD and Nvidia cards. Hence adaptive, it adapts to your system.
@SaltyMaud
@SaltyMaud 2 місяці тому
Other way around. VESA Adaptive sync is the underlying tech. It's hardware agnostic, adaptive doesn't refer to "adapting to your system", but adapting to the framerate, the core functionality of any Adaptive sync implementation. Freesync and G-Sync are both built upon Adaptive sync, basic Freesync and G-Sync _compatible_ are practically just the base Adaptive sync implementation rebranded.

The Gray to Gray is measured on an LCD panel because Black to Black can be faked by quickly overshooting to above 100% and then falling back to 0%. The result is not useful for a monitor that really needs to generate fine variations in shades of gray. Another reason is Vertical Alignment (VA) LCD panels are slow to transitioning between two dark shades, say from 5% to 25% brightness.

For a 2nd monitor, you should test it for image retention. A lot of cheap monitors have problems with it.

I love the joystick on the back of my new MSI Optix MPG321UR-QD. It's so much better than my old Asus MX27UC. I agree, monitors should make pressing buttons and OSD navigation easier. So many are a pain to use. I generally love Amazon Basics products, but I'd never buy a monitor from them. I got silverware and stuff. 😂 Amazon Basics is actually using other companies to make products and just having them brand it Amazon Basics. I seen a cheap CPU cooler review from them and it was actually a Cooler Master budget cooler rebranded.

Could you do a video comparing the difference between IPS, VA, and TN?

In short, IPS for gaming, VA for TV/media, TN for budget.

I learned some time ago that the so called 'Amazon Basics' deals a lot of times were ripoffs. I guess you could argue that the benefits you get from from the return policy make the extra 20 over the 79 dollar model work as a cheap extended warranty, but they really effed up what could have been a good deal. My first LCD TV\PC monitor was a 22 inch AOC I bought in 2008 and it worked great. I had it for several years and before I had to sell it at a pawn shop. I agree with you on the button placement, I like it best when they're on the front.

AmazonBasics is just a rebrand of whatever OEM is willing to bid at their margins. If you know who makes what, often you *can* get a good deal, but it does involve research.

You should do the ASRock Phantom PG27F15RS1A 27"... I have been wondering if that monitor is good or not. I don't mind the 27 inch and it being 1080p resolution. I often wondered about the grey to grey, motion blur, overall latency and etc.

i had AOC 24" Curved C24G2U/BK can be overclocked to 175hz its great liked it so much my wife took it from me... so i got a AOC CU34G2X 34" 144Hz 1ms FreeSync Curved. the 3440x1440 can go up to 165hz . both were great and affordable. still running a 2060 and an i7 6700k so i kept it at 60hz . eitherway its great. never going back to non curved. the c24 cost like 200 euros on sale, and the 34 also on sale was 400ish euros. best monitors ive ever had

I trashed my LG OLED monitor when trying to remove the matte finish on it (the glass underneath shattered because I was a little to impatient..). So now a very similar model like this one is my main monitor for now. Small disclaimer: I've done several removals of matte layers before and did my research. It was going well but the adhesive that was in the middle hadn't loosen up enough yet so it shattered the actual 'glass' panel underneath by me pulling to hard. Yes I know, Big Oof. R.i.p $800 XD

I got a VA panel 144hz in the 140 price range because I believed the hype of "it combines the best of IPS and TN" and it has big blurry areas around the edges that look like water damage, but apparently is just common in VA panels. I needed a monitor to play games at work (as most of us IT guy like to have) so I didn't want to spend a lot of money. For someone that hasn't ever had a really good monitor, it might have been fine, but when you have a $600 MSI gaming monitor at home and then you hop into the same game on a $140 VA panel... It just hurts your soul. Ended up just buying the same monitor again and having one at work and one at home.

Jay could you do a system for audio? Recording studios and production machines? Mac's are expensive but they work. I'm looking to build a windows machine that can handle audio but not break the bank. right now im having a hard time with dealing with noise from the interface... and the same interface is dead silent on windows.

I have a 34 inches AOC VA 1440P monitor, and I was scared of how unknowing the brand is to me and the fact that it as VA, but it's been working perfectly and with good settings I got the color profile to be as close as possible to a normal mid-range IPS panel, I think the brand is not too bad but at such price range I don't think anyone can make a good monitor

I remember when like 19" 60Hz LCD panels were legit expensive, and I was a poor college student. You kids are lucky. For reference, I went back in my ancient Gmail account, found an ad from Newegg in 2008 for a Acer AL1916W 19" on sale for $149.99. It's a TFT LCD in 1440x900. If you ROUGHLY convert for inflation, that's $219 in today's money. Not counting the increased price of everything else a student would have to deal with today. Lesson is... Don't over spend today if you can't afford it. There will be far better options later on.

built my daughters first pc almost 2 years ago got her an i7 3770s, 16gb ram and a rx 580 8gb. wanted to get her something decent for now and something to grow into. so i looked on amazon. being amazon i wasnt as scared to take a risk on them sub 100$ as long as i ordered from a ship from address worst case just throw it back in the box and ship it back. either way i took a shot on a jlink 25in 75hz 1080p monitor with adaptive sync and for 95$ its actually pretty awesome. especially for the price people may dog on VA panels but because of that cheapo panel let me to getting a 205$ lg ultra gear 1440p 165hz gsync monitor on amazon. you really arent gonna find anything better in either price range.

I found the 1440p market difficult here in the uk if you have these 4 criteria 1 must be more than 60/75hz as main gaming display 2 must be at least 32” to replace current tv/monitor 3 budget is £200 as that’s right between decent 1080p and low end 4K which are both £200 4 obviously must be 1440p (so I can pass it down to the games console/kids eventually)

I have one 21:9 AOC monitor. It's not bad, but when it works for prolonged time I belive it overheats and often turns off and on. So, yeah, cheaper products can be problematic.

Confusing video. You had AVOID plastered all over title and screen shot and then ended with go ahead and buy it. BUT THEN. I looked at the 24G15N you showed for $10 more and I wouldn't touch this (monitor reviewed) with a 10' pole. 180Hz, 1ms and a center mounting stand. For $140, you get a 27" with same goodies. You really screwed the pooch when you bought the one you did. You gotta get the 27G15 and review it to make things right. That's a great deal!

I built my son his first PC for Christmas (very budget but all new), and we got him a curved 24" Sceptre: 1080p, 75hz, 5ms response (I think), 2 HDMI, for $89. The stand sucks, but the panel is decent for the price.

there are a TON of "75hz" (likely overclocked) sitting at around $100 or so aka $85-$115. My secondary monitor is one of them from Philips and since its my secondary I don't really care about the refrshrate of the monitor as it is never used for gaming and use it mainly for non gaming things. My main is a $260 Pixio $27" 1440p@165hz with freesync onboard which works perfectly with gsync on my nvidia cards

Buttons need to be at the front on all monitors! The power button can be on the side or on the back at the side, but configuration buttons need to be on the front.
@rodhester2166
@rodhester2166 2 місяці тому
I am with you on the buttons on the front. Having a kvm switch button on the rear is terrible if you have monitors that are side by side, You cant reach the buttons unless you move your monitors apart. dumb. Plus pushing on a button with any forces on the rear of the monitor tends to move it a bit.. where as the front you fingers can loop around to the back to hold it.
This is why people hate building PCs these days
