When I was growing up in Idaho in the eighties people bought land and built their own homes all the time. The problem is that once “Developers” see a market, they lobby , profit share and worse to convince city and county entities to ease their permit process and fees, while making it burdensome on individual builders to do the same.

Unfortunately, our Washington residents are fleeing to your state and bringing their practices. I can't build anything other than a storage shed. Anything that stores a vehicle (of any kind) requires a garage permit, and a garage permit requires a concrete pad, which requires special grading since we're on a slope. It takes a $3k build to over $15k. It makes me so frustrated the government now owns everything in our lives.

If you think Washington is bad. I won't even mention California... People are fleeing to Oregon and Washington and all points east,and everywhere else ...so sad 😭

I’ve spent some time off grid in a cabin around Killarney, it’s a beautiful way to live. Fishing and sledding on your door step…..the most impressive thing about this is the great family bond you all have.

You said you built the minimum they would allow. Why is that? Cost, heating efficiency... etc.

We originally wanted to build several smaller buildings. Like a camp with separate buildings for sleeping, eating and bathing but you must first build a primary residence.

@@OntarioLakeside that's a good way to do it. Where I live you can only have 2 nonpermited structures 200 sq ft or under for storage that are non-inhabitable... otherwise they would have to be grandfathered in.
