While I'm all for instellar travel, it is pragmatic to instead wish that we should take a step back and get ourselves to a T1 civilization before even thinking about what we need to go to T2. For this, we really need to start seriously looking at developing an intra-system manufacturing infrastructure. Creating a ship manufacturing area in one of Earth's langrange points, then creating mining vessels which wouldn't need to overcome the gravity well would do miracles for our exploration of the system. At that point, setting up a mineral processing facility on Phobos which those mining vessels can deliver to would be next. Then we just need transportation and engineering ships depending on where those processed minerals should go. What's sad is that we could literally start doing this today if it wasn't for global geopolitics.

Do you know about Starfield game from Bethesda? Also a sci-fi space game. There is some interesting lore about the warp drive, or GravDrive as it is known in the game itself. Spoiler alert: At the dawn of space exploration for humanity when the GravDrive (in-game name for warp drive) was first developed it had a very serious negative flaw - it disrupted Earth gravity in a big way. Since it was used extensively by human civilization ever since its creation it gradually messed up and weakened Earth's gravity, leading to it's atmosphere evaporating into space (cuz there was little to no gravity to keep it in place), which led to disappearance of ozone layer, which led to Earth being scorched by ultraviolet solar radiation, which led to evaporation of oceans and extinction of all life on the surface and eventually Earth turned into one giant lifeless desert without an atmosphere. Ultimately the human civilization abandoned Earth and spread across the galaxy (they fixed the GravDrive's fatal flaw first of course, so that the same thing would not happen again on other planets).

Thus, my second sentence, in short, "we just don't know how to do that yet". But the first step is knowing it can be done. So, I will say it again differently. "By the math, it can be done. I bet we will beat the light barrier. Just because we don't know how yet doesn't mean it's impossible. Gravitational waves have shown us it is possible. Before the sound barrier people thought all kind of crazy things would happen or prevent it, turns out it's just a bit of turbulence, pressure changes, and accounting for changes on how control surfaces respond. I think we will eventually achieve the same with the light barrier. It's just a larger, harder to achieve challenge. But we will get there.

Okay, so all we need to do is create a black hole in front of a ship, with its connecting white hole behind the ship. A localized wormhole, but instead of traveling thru it from one point to another, you use and travel with the entire system overall. Self propulsion, if you will. The black hole in front is kept at a certain distance from the vessel, which is surrounded by a "warp bubble", it pulls in the warp bubble itself, while the white hole is kept a certain distance behind the vessel, pushing it from behind. The space inside the warp bubble is kept still, so space will move around this localized pocket of space time, black/ white holes included. The mass/ energy of the black hole will be equalized by the negative mass/ energy of the white hole, so you would need to surround these two objects in a cylindrical "warp tunnel" that would entangle the two together enough to allow them to travel faster than light. Think of a warp tunnel, at the entrance is a black hole, in the center is a warp bubble that holds the contained positive mass and energy of the traveling vessel and crew, and at the exit of the tunnel is an entangled white hole. In order to stop traveling with this method tho, you would need to collapse the two holes together to cancel each other out, which could potentially cause damage to the local area upon arrival. The gravitational waves of such a collision is also a danger factor. Unless... you build containment rings, such as the rings around the vessel, like shown on the enterprise model in the video, that enclose the white and black holes in a "nullifying field" that cancels out their pulls and pushes. This would require 4 singularities to accomplish tho... you would also need to figure out how to manipulate and control the gravitational affects of said singularities in order to gain such capabilities. Then again... the black hole and the white hole will already create a wormhole thru space time, technically going straight thru the apparent location of the traveling vessel. Pull the walls of this wormhole "out" far enough and you'll pull both singularities into the wormhole as well, letting them cancel each other out without harming anything, potentially. It's still unknown where the wormhole actually "exists", so this could potentially still cause damage in an area we aren't aware of yet. But it would cancel out both singularities and stop the forward motion of the vessel at the destination. We need better ways to contain/ "delete" the singularities to enable safer travel. The black hole in the front of the tunnel would also act as a force field for the vessel against incoming debris, seeing it exit the white hole from the exit of the tunnel. Huh... a literal "worm" "hole". Creating the spacial distortion to build the tunnel is another matter entirely as well tho... much to consider with this one

Probably need two equally opposed masses in a rotation following along an orbital eccentric. Basically following mirrored elliptical paths approximately meeting in a "V". Masses balance and cancel each other out for part of the cycle, but there should be a way to bias the impulse of the cycle where they don't. But agreed, gravitational waves might be the right approach. (Properties of cymatics with interference patterns in standing waves gives some idea. No exotic materials needed there.) But would the material needed to make a device showing any appreciable effect have to be made of unobtanium? Presumably it requires a good bit of mass changing direction very fast, and subject to all kinds of stresses.

Have a pipes that is made of graphene with active reinforcement. Spin it along the axis, so it's wall is now the floor. At reletavistic speed. At one end(and the half that's attached), you add another pipe. That spins counter, and is conecentric with it. The frame dragging of the spinning pipes, means that at the area the pipe is alone, the space inside it has less zeropoint ambient energy, while at the half that has the other one added in, the frame dragging effects of both partially cancel eachother out, so you have and area where energy accumulate. Rather than getting flung out with the gravity waves. Positive energy. The other, negative energy, relatively speaking.

Even if warping space were possible, the contraction of space in front of the ship poses a rather nasty problem. What happens to the mass near or directly in front of the ship? The warp drive most likely is impossible. While Alcubierre described how it could work, he basically just used the math that space can curve to say it's possible. There was never any explanation as to how you would even go to warp space in a positive way not even thinking about negatively for the field. Plus in recent time more research has heavily cast doubt on warp drives being realistic or even safe even if they could be done. In recent times most evidence suggests that gravity isn't actually a field at all, it's just a side effect of the warping of space time, so that would kill that method of warping space. Studies of unrah radiation and hawking radiation have suggested that a successful warp field would expose the ship to nearly unimaginably powerful waves of radiation. The negative portion behind the ship would basically be like being chased by a white hole. And then there's what I'd refer to as the "spatial spring" effect. The warp field around the ship has to be released at some point and when it does the energy expended warping space needs to be released with it making what would be an absurd death ray nearly as powerful as some black hole's jets. If we accept the fact this is real and alien life exists, well this effect should be obvious across the entire universe.

On the way there, they are bound to invent and explore many new things. And knowledge is always good; it's what you do with it, that is important.

I believe your visual explanation of negative and positive space is slightly incorrect, what is actually happening is that the grid scale gets smaller within negative space and larger for positive space this has an effect on how we perceive light curving also time within negative compressed space grid slows, its the reason why clocks are slower on earth vs in space for example. In the case of the warp drive the goal is to compress and expand the space time grid to create something akin to the effect of riding a wave on a surfboard, in my opinion though if we manage to create an expanded space time bubble around an object it should allow that object to move up to instantly to the outside observer.

In the Star Trek series, the problems with warp drive are no longer an issue - they work, and ships are able to go from no or little motion to faster than light in a fraction of a second. What keeps this from killing every human on the ship by mashing them into a stain against the back wall is something referred to as "inertial dampers", something never really explained but shown as a problem when they are offline. "Captain, we cannot go to warp speed because the inertial dampers are offline". My question concerns this concept of warp drive, where the ship is motionless (is it?) while space is "warped" around it. Does this get away from needing something like an "inertial damper", because if it doesn't, then it will take some time to go from sitting still in orbit around a planet to light speed, and this gradual acceleration will both take time and put stress on the human body. Keep in mind, that the process will need to be reversed as the ship nears its target - it cannot just stop instantly like it can in the Star Trek series.

If the drive is using a controlled black hole like in this video, the concept itself might be used in inertial dampening.

Crazy theory time: gravity is a dipole. "What?" I hear you say, "no it's not." Hear me out, it is, but its poles are at the same physical location in 3D space, they are only separate in 4D space. Or, the state of the poles are super-positioned over one another, but separate temporally. So to that, all we need is to split the poles in regular space. A boson beam splitter. And the energy required to do this may be far, far less than that of a Jupiter-worth of nuclear fusion.

Let's put negative energy aside, as well as it's intended use in this case. How would we use positive energy to contract space in front of the ship? Further more, wouldn't doing so create a gravity well and propel the ship forward? Most certainly not at FTL speeds, but forward nonetheless.

If a ship travels at a constant 1g acceleration rate it would get to Alpha Centauri in 3.6 years (7.3 years would pass on Earth) and this includes turning the ship around halfway to decelerate. It would achieve about 95% light speed in 1 year. A 10 ton ship would require a mere 10 tons of continuous thrust. This is by far the fastest way we can get to other worlds and the ship would have gravity the whole way. All that is needed for this to become a reality is a fission rocket that can put out thrust for long periods and does not consume hydrogen. A true fission rocket should consume uranium or plutonium only. They are both jittery atoms that are on the verge of fissioning all by themselves. There should be a way to get them to fission in a linear fashion. What's needed is a controlled, time released nuclear explosion. In an atomic bomb fission occurs when neutrons hit uranium or plutonium nuclei. This is because they will not tolerate an increase in mass. Due to the equivalence of mass and energy the same should be true in you infuse them with energy. This might be as simple as having negatively charged uranium or plutonium atoms coming into contact with positively charged uranium or plutonium atoms. 1 kg of uranium contains the same potential energy as 120,000 tons of coal and plutonium has even more energy. Not much would be needed for the trip. With the constant acceleration method a ship can span the entire diameter of our galaxy in 24 ship/113,000 Earth years. Systems with stars similar to our sun can be reached in under 10 ship years.

I think another approach is instead of looking at energy, look at the nature of an absolute vacuum also defined as free space. Turns out c²=ε₀μ₀ which might used in terms of substitution. (For those missing the unicode characters, that is the square of the speed of light is the product of permittivity of free space multiplied by the permeability of free space.) In which case it may be that m=E/(ε₀μ₀) (mass equal to the ratio of Energy vs. the product of the vacuum properties.) I'd hypothesize that doing something like using some kind of laser interferometry with Casimir plates in a vacuum chamber might be a thing to start research with. Basically looking to see what if anything can cause ripples or standing waves as detected by the interferometry apparatus over the boundary zone of the Casimir plates. Magnetic fields (both static and dynamic), RF waves, charge carriers, rotating masses, various combinations of such... Are the vacuum properties always constant, or are they more reflective of a couple other things going on that we haven't paid enough attention towards? In other words, think of the vacuum properties as describing something to do with the tension stored in the rubber of the rubber sheet analogy used in the video to describe space-time. Understanding that well enough may indicate there might be something interesting where you could manipulate gravity waves, instead of directly needing exotic matter. If it's possible to figure out that hack, then you'd have something.

I mean I would think it'd be impossible to detect negative energy with anything other than a neutrino detector. If a black hole has a point where light can no longer escape it, by the same token a negative energy "white hole" would have a threshold where light/matter could not approach it rendering it invisible to anything other than the ability to detect particle/energy deflections away from an "empty" point in space. As far as powering a drive like that the only thing that makes sense to me is to figure out a field emitter that functions like a fuel scoop harvesting neutrons before the ship out of the void and pushing them like an aerospike behind the ship creating areas of high and low relativistic densities.

So, you contract the space in front. We know how to do that, with gravity of course. And you also expand the space behind the spacecraft. We'll do that with anti-gravity. So, to invent warp drive, one just needs to invent anti-gravity. SO SIMPLE! :)

Now if we could harness that expansion and turn it into energy oruse it to make a warp bubble, could we then travel against the expansion and make a wormhole to travel though space? Positive ultra short impulses. The video is right, we dont need exotic matter when we can create field interference of waves. The challenge once its impulsed fast enough will be the interference patterns. Say in space we spew ions out and create a flow reversed loop or orbital shell for ions to travel through in routes with charge or magnetic field based attraction or deflection.

I'm no physicist...I'm an automechanic...but speed of light is effectively the speed of "effect". A photon going the speed of light doesn't have any passage of time. So going FTL would be like arriving before you departed essentially. Take that with a grain of salt...I'm probably missing something important. But taking a "bubble" of space with you seems like you would avoid the problems of traveling light speed "through" soace....going FTL in that bubble would reverse causality....I think...but I could be full of shit 🤷‍♂️
