Fantastic video on one of my favorite WWII stories! For anyone curious, this project was done at Brule Lake in Alberta, about four hours west of Edmonton. From what I've read, there is a plaque dedicated to the Habbakuk on the shores of the lake. I was planning to visit last year but had to postpone. Can't wait to try again this spring!

Another huge issue for the project was that as they experimented and came up with innovative mechanisms the Battle of the Atlantic was being won. Eventually there came a point where the U-Boats were no longer the menace they had been and Germany's surface raiders were either sunk or trapped in port.
@MrHws5mp
@MrHws5mp 2 місяці тому
Also, longer-ranged land-based aircraft were able to close the "Atlantic Gap" and provide continuous air cover for convoys, so there was no longer a pressing need for a floating airfield capable of operating large maritime patrol aircraft in the middle of the Atlantic.

Once in awhile you hear about an iceberg the size of a small country breaking off Antarctica and floating around the ocean for five or six years. I always thought some rich entrepreneur should helicopter out there, plant a flag on it and build an ice hotel & resort on it. A lot of adventure eco tourists might pay for it. Obviously it's temporary, but it might be fun to own your own floating island for a few years.

There's another factor that prevented the building of a pykrete aircraft carrier - the range of aircraft was increasing. In 1941, the Kriegsmarine's submarine fleet had plenty of space in between air patrols from Canada and those from the British Isles. In this space, they could easily hide by submerging, and lie in wait for convoys. Pyke's massive carrier would sit in the middle of this space, allowing air patrols to cover the entire width of the North Atlantic. By the end of 1943, this space had almost disappeared. Patrols from Canada were almost able to overlap with patrols from the British Isles. Thus, Pyke's carrier was no longer needed.

We're probably overlooking a lot of good ones, but we're also overlooking a whole lot more bad ones Don't forget, pykrete looked promising at first, promising enough to be worth doing the research on, but after they did that research no one ended up actually using the stuff.
