(60+years dog trainer here) Harnesses were created to assist the dog to pull with greater comfort. If you want to teach Bruce to not pull on the leash, a prong collar works best. You don't allow the leash to get tight, rather you give tugs just hard enough to get the dog to back off and not pull on you. I used one of these on my husky. Only had to tug on it once for him to learn not to pull. He never pulled while it was on after that. BUT he knew when he was not wearing it.

Same suggestion was coming from me too. I have a Great Dane who was about 5 months old and had had ZERO leash time, etc. before i got her. She still (4 years later) gets her prong collar when I need full control. As soon as I put it on, she is calm, follows full commands, etc. BUT take it off her and she is a nut case! ROFL Bruce is a beautiful dog and deserves all the best - which i am sure he will get from you guys. Congrats to Bruce and the entire family!

Have a vet or shelter check for a micro chip on Bruce. If you get a harness, you'd have to get an anti-pull one. A harness allows them to use full force to pull like sled dogs. Your better option may be a gentle leader or have off leash with remote training collar.

When My family did obedience training with our dogs.. we always used pronged collars that we learned as kids in our training of our dogs to Heal, sit, come, stay, All using the collar.. quick jerks and starts and stops for at least half an hour a day alone with the dog. The collar releases right away.. it's just a quick jerk and release. They learn very quickly. and we also used only praise as a reward. Once the dog learns we would do training about 2-3 times a week, but healing and start and stops and stays and comes daily. These dogs were in dog shows and won tons of trophies.. so it does work.

Years ago I raised Treeing Walkers here. I saw MANY breeders kill their hunting stock, or dump them, if they had "liar mouth" (barking to say they were "on" something, and nothing was there). Please do ALWAYS use caution when he is around your cats. It can go bad for the cats so fast and out of the clear blue.

I’ve seen people with stress fractures in hands & arms. If dog is persistently pulling attach your lead to a belt round your waist. It is much better for your hands, arms & shoulders. Even a body harness attached to your waist is fine. God Bless and all my Love from Ellen Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺

Beautiful Blue Tick hound dog. Used for hunting racoons. My dad had Redbone Hounds and Blue Tick hounds when I was a child. Daddy hunted Racoons for hides back in the day when pelts were profitable. I'm 74 now and remember it well. He cooked the racoons in a big cast iron wash pot in the back yard with pig shorts.. a feed for pigs, and he fed the dogs in long wooded food troughs. May be a Tennessee walker..but more likely a Blue Tick hound. Big eaters..😂 He's beautiful!!!.

When we had a German Shepherd years ago she used to pull me around on walks well I have asthma so it wasn't very good I had to only let my then husband take her. So he paid to let her go to doggy school, they taught us quite a lot. The 2 main things they taught was use a harness which I know you said your getting but also if they pull on walks pull back on the lead and say heel. It worked and I could finally take her walks myself. Xx

With the leash attached to collar, lay leash down the middle of back to about past the rib cage. Run leash under belly and up to back and under leash. This tightens up on them if they pull hard and they might give you a few farts but will quit pulling so hard. Try it.😁😁😁💕

Hey guys, y’all probably won’t like what I’m about to say but, here goes. The fella before me @Greyfyre…. Is right! My Husband was A.F. Animal Behavior Specialist at Lackland A.F.B., San Antonio, Tx. & I raised Toy Poodles ( which he called my babies pretend dogs) , & I listened to him for over 50 years. My Husband used choke chair collar, & before you say (I,m not doing that to my do)…. It’s the chain making noise that will get your dogs attention. Hold the lead w/ one hand rolled around your hand. With the other hand - your holding the leash closer to to dogs head Bruce or Ghost & w/ a quick jerk of the choke chain & a very FIRM NO your Fur Baby will be ready to please. Repetition is key, don’t give up. You must be firm. If you have any more questions tell me on Rox & Ant & I’ll get you my number. I told Mike DD5 about this somewhat but didn’t follow thru, maybe you could pass this on. There is a special way to put the chock collar on also. Ask the people you buy it from to demonstrate. Hope this helps.

Good Morning guys, although as I watch it's 2:30pm here! LOL I had some things to do this am and grocery store. Home now, with more house work. I see you have Bruce on a leash. Maybe a harness leash would make it easier to handle him. Being in the yard, or woods he might be harder to control, he is a hunting breed, so he's always searching for the next find. Just as I said this, you said you needed a full body harness. Great minds think alike! LOL He will learn, might just take time. Yeah, I'm sure Ghost is jealous or wondering what the heck? My cats are always jealous of the attention you give the other ones. Well guys have an awesome day! Maybe next time you should leave the cats as home. LOL Listen at that howl! LOL

Roxane and Anthony you may want to try the Gentle lead color on him I use it on my Husky and my lab and once it’s on they automatically stop pulling it’s the only way I can walk them because they are both to strong for me. It looks like it would hurt but it don’t is the same as when momma would pick them up by neck to move them place to place. Look into maybe it’s an alternative because sometime the harness on pull dogs will encourage them at least my dogs lol. He’s a beautiful hunting dog you can definitely hunt rabbit and squirrels now ! He may like your bunnies also. To pull more like Husky’s are ment to pull and harness means pull for a Husky Can’t wait to see everyone soon :) and hang out with your momma .

hi there, one thing i have seen people do to train dogs like bruce is to make them be like 2 kind off dogs, one is when they are at home then they are "regular" dog. the second one is when they do a specific task then they become a "working" dog. so like when you put the harness on for bruce then he know he is going to "work" but when he do not have the harness on then he is a "regular" one. that could prevent him to be in "working" mode all the time and it could become less stressful for him and you. just a thought

Something else you can do is once your leash is attached to the collar. Bring the leash back to just behind his shoulders, wrap round his chest and slip under itself. Leash will be short but it can help with pulling until you figure out what you want to do and get it .

Hi guys! Love seeing all the pets! Bruce just has to adapt to your way of life which being a hunting dog may be a little more difficult. I would suggest that when he wants to do something that he’s not allowed to that you tell him NO!! Sharply. Tug him back some with the leash and repeat saying NO Bruce. He should know what that word means. Even practicing in the yard with him. He especially needs to learn not to pull on the leash which I’m sure you know. Good luck with Mr. Bruce he has a lot to learn about obeying you. Have a wonderful day!! 💜

Hi Anthony and Roxanne, please don't take this wrong please I'm not being negative towards you guys, I'm just being honest. Please get your dogs some harnesses for them. I'm a vet tech and I do animal rescue have been doing both for over 28 years. The collars are so dangerous. You don't have to take my word google it. We see so many dogs come in on collars with collapse trachea from the collars pulling. It is sad to watch a pet die from gasping for breath, unable to eat or swallow. All it takes is one hard pull on the throat to damage the trachea. We tell everyone that comes in to please get a harnesse and not collars. The new pointer (they pull hard) is one of the most We see cause people put the on wire lines and hold them before releasing in a hunt. I know you guys love your animals and care about them. I don't want anyone to go through heartbreak. Please if you don't believe me look it up. Hugs, loves and prayers. ❤
